CCNA Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide (Exam 640-507), Second Edition Review

CCNA Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide (Exam 640-507), Second Edition

I think this book is very helpful. But I am disturbed by all the negative reviews that it has received. Cisco certifications, Microsoft certifications, almost all certifications are for people who have been in the IT industry for at least a year. It even states what I have written above in most of the certification books that I have purchased. These certification books are not for people with zero experience. That is a marketing sceme to up sales on their books. Which in turn, floods the job market with "Certified" people who end up being more harmful than good. I concede that there are some errors with questions and diagrams, but I find I have received more in-depth and permanent experience by editing these errors. Too many people desire to just cram all this knowledge in a few days, take the exam, and then forget what they have learned. And I wonder why I continually run into "Certified" people who make more mistakes than non-certified people with equivalent experience. If you have at least a few months PRACTICAL experience with cisco products and are looking to get certified ... I definitely recommend this book.

CCNA Security Exam Cram (Exam IINS 640-553)

I purchased this book to prepare for the CCNA Security Exam due to the ratings I saw at the Amazon store. The book is pretty concise and everything is really well explained. The only dissapointing thing is the fact that there is a chapter not fully covered in the book. That is the Securing Layer 2 devices chapter. To have a full read about that topic, I would recommend the CCNA Security Official Exam Certification Guide from Cisco written by Kevin Wallace. Anyway, the Exam Cram has result in a very good book to read for preparing the exam, which I hope pass in a few weeks.
Hope you find interesting this review.

CISSP Practice Questions Exam Cram 2 Review

CISSP Practice Questions Exam Cram 2
Average Reviews:

I passed the CISSP examination in NYC last month and used this book as part of my practice drills. I mainly used the practice CD. The book itself is the practice CD in paper form. The questions Gregg asks are specific, yet challenging, and push your level of understanding of the 10 domains. The CD engine works fine, but the "mark" feature had a few issues at the end of a quiz. Overall, I believe that this CD isolated my weakness very well in relation to other quiz engines, so I knew exactly what I needed to spend more time on. The questions on calculating ALE and SLE were useful and applicable in a real world sense. Combine this book with Tittel, Harris and ISC2 study guides and you should really have a command of the material.

CCNA Security Official Exam Certification Guide (Exam 640-553)
Average Reviews:

DON'T BUY! ABSOLUTELY WORTHLESS FOR THE EXAM. This book should be billed as a primer only. It contains good introductory-level information but was nowhere near the level of depth of information required on the actual exam. The cover says it has "realistic exam questions." Not so. I passed all practice exams with ease, but on the actual exam, the level of granularity on the questions was much more in-depth than anything covered in the book. This book in no way, shape, or form prepares you for the exam. Like I said, good as an intro to the subject but definitely NOT good for exam preparation. Sorry to disappoint, but either they changed the exam to make it harder, or whoever advertised the book over-reached on their claims for how the book would prepare you. In any case, if it ever was good, it is NOT good for this exam any longer. DON'T BUY!

Walk into any school in America and you will see adults who care deeply about their students and are doing the best they can every day to help students learn. But you will also see a high degree of variability among classrooms much higher than in most other industrialized countries. Today we are asking schools to do something they have never done before educate all students to high levels yet we don t know how to do that in every classroom for every child. This book is intended to help education leaders and practitioners develop a shared understanding of what high-quality instruction looks like and what schools and districts need to do to support it. Inspired by the medical rounds model used by physicians, the authors have pioneered a new form of professional learning known as instructional rounds networks. Through this process, educators develop a shared practice of observing, discussing, and analyzing learning and teaching.

I just took the test today and I'm still in shock about passing the CCNA. About six weeks ago I decided to get serious and start studying for this test. I bought the Cisco Press books and the 'CCNA for Dummies' book. It turns out that I didn't even use the 'Dummies' book. The Cisco Press Library comes with two books, which I read both cover to cover. After reading both books I moved to the CDs that also comes with this set, which have a lot of useful material. The Boson practice exams that come with the book, I think are the most useful. The questions that the practice exams asks are very similar to the questions that the real test asks. With the combination of both the book and the practice exams you will be well prepared. Practicing with all the tricky questions really makes you learn the material to the smallest detail. The DVDs that come with the book are pretty lame and dry, I didn't even use them. I do what to clarify that I did have previous hands on experience with Cisco routers, but I used a free simulator to brush up on some of my skills. This book set is a must and I probably would not have passed without it. I was really nervous walking into the exam, but the resources that this book set provides prepared me very well for the exam.

Time Management for System Administrators Review

Time Management for System Administrators
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To save everyone the trouble, I'll make the obvious joke: "I bought a book on time management, but I haven't had time to read it..."
Tom Limoncelli knows this about you. He knows a lot about you. He's encountered, and found solutions for, just about every one of the paradoxes, dilemmas, Catch-22s, and neverending Sisyphean ordeals that comprise the day-to-day challenge of being a professional system administrator. He wrote (with Christine Hogan) The Practice of System and Network Administration, which presents a thorough and practical body of knowledge for IT professionals: it describes all the things you need to do to build and run a manageable infrastructure. Now he's written an equally practical book on how to actually get those things done, and he wrote it in a way that makes it palatable for system administrators -- a famously cynical bunch when it comes to books about personal productivity. And there's a lot to be cynical about...
Here's how "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People", by Stephen Covey, begins:
In more than 25 years of working with people in business,
university, and marriage and family settings, I have come in
contact with many individuals who have achieved an incredible
degree of outward success, but have found themselves struggling
with an inner hunger, a deep need for personal congruency and
effectiveness and for healthy, growing relationships with other
people.
Deep need for personal congruency? The only deep need I feel at the moment involves my gag reflex, and not in a good way.
In comparison, here's how Tom begins:
Wait! Before we get started, let's do something to make sure we
actually finish. I realize that as a system administrator, you
are flooded with constant interruptions. The phone rings, a
customer stops by with questions, your email reader beeps with
the arrival of a new message, and someone on Instant Messenger
is trying to raise your attention. Heck, I bet someone's
interrupted you while reading this paragraph. I'm not going to
cover how to deal with interruptions until the next chapter, and
I hope you don't take offense, but at this rate, I'm worried you
won't get that far. To mitigate this problem I'm going to share
a tip from Chapter 2, which, if you implement, will shield you
from interruptions between now and when we can deal with the
subject of interruptions properly.
This book is for system administrators.
Much of the geek community has embraced David Allen's Getting Things Done as a purely pragmatic way to, well, get things done, and Tom's book complements GTD in two ways. First, Tom describes his own personal system in the space of a couple of chapters, for those who aren't interested in drinking the GTD Kool-Aid but still need to start using a system. Second, Time Management for System Administrators is totally system-agnostic -- whether you use a PDA or index cards, just about every chapter of the book will amplify the effectiveness of your existing system. He also tells you how to get into Disneyland and ride all the rides without waiting in line, and how to minimize the time you spend walking around the video store looking for something to rent.
Anyway, I need to cut this short; I'm supposed to be packing for a trip to a weeklong conference, and my girlfriend just called to remind me that we were supposed to see a movie tonight, and -- well, you know.
Incidentally, anyone who runs computers for a living should also own, read, and re-read The Practice of System and Network Administration. Buy it now if you haven't already. Also buy it for your staff, your peers, and your boss. If you don't have time to do that now, add it to your to-do list. You do have a to-do list, don't you?

Time is a precious commodity, especially if you're a system administrator. No other job pulls people in so many directions at once.Users interrupt you constantly with requests, preventing you from getting anything done.Your managers want you to get long-term projects done but flood you with requests for quick-fixes that prevent you from ever getting to those long-term projects. But the pressure is on you to produce and it only increases with time. What do you do?

The answer is time management. And not just any time management theory--you want Time Management for System Administrators, to be exact. With keen insights into the challenges you face as a sys admin, bestselling author Thomas Limoncelli has put together a collection of tips and techniques that will help you cultivate the time management skills you need to flourish as a system administrator.

Network+ Guide to Networks, Second Edition Review

Network+ Guide to Networks, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is well-organized and contains all information relevant to the Network+ exam. Reading this book straight through is not necessary because it covers topics in much more detail than you need to know for the exam. This is a great reference book to hold on to. I would recommend buying this book, as well as Mike Meyer's Network+ 2nd Edition, and using this book to fill in the various holes left by Meyers. Meyers' book fails to address certain areas in enough detail, especially TCP/IP & IPX/SPX models vs OSI model, Remote Access, WAN Technologies, and Network Troubleshooting. This book by T. Dean does an excellent job in these areas. Also, the end-of-chapter questions in this book are far more chalenging than the easy questions presented by Meyers. The only pitfall, since this is a textbook geared towards the classroom setting, is that the book does not include the answers to these questions or to the practice test at the end of the book. The answers to the chapter questions can be obtained from the publisher. However, I was not able to get the answers to the practice test. Also, I was disappointed to learn the CD-ROM only contains the digital edition of the book, and no interactive exams.

I recently passed CCNA exam 640-507 with a score of 860 (on my first try). I have read the Cisco Press books as well but found them quite difficult to read and understand.
Todd Lammle's book covers all angles and provides simplified explanations off all CCNA exam objectives. Although this book is extremely helpful, one should read this book several times to fully understand the material required to pass the exam. The exam is based on comprehension, not memorization of questions and answers.
For hands on practice using Cisco router configuration commands, I suggest the Sybex virtual lab trainer.

Practical Network Cabling Review

Practical Network Cabling
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book falls into the category of books that provide a survey of a field, useful for a beginner but certainly not for an advanced network administrator or cabling installer. For example, I needed to send instructions to an electrician at a remote site in Alaska on basic cabling techniques so that he could set up a small LAN using best practices. Unfortunately, this book lacked a basic procedure on how to punch down strands of 4-pair on to a punch down block. Another example, the 568a / 568b issues are poorly explained. Therefore, if you need real, hands-on information for an implementation, then move on to another book, perhaps one from BCSI, or perhaps the Sybex book by Groth and McBee.

ATM Signalling: Protocols and Practice Review

ATM Signalling: Protocols and Practice
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ever been looking for an ATM version of W Richard Steven's TCP/IP Illustrated ? This book is it.
ATM is difficult, the authors do not try to hide the tough bits or oversimplify. They want to help people who run live ATM networks with Signalling, LAN Emulation, and emerging native ATM applications. They show the facts, explain the protocol flows at hand and via the TINA suite of protocol decoders (equivalents to the familiar tcpdump debugging tool) allow network adminstrators and developers to locate and eliminate real life ATM problems.
One of the books you'll keep in reach of your desk.

New Directions in Project Management (Best Practices) Review

New Directions in Project Management (Best Practices)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are two things prospective readers need to know about this book: (1) it is focused in IT and software development project management, and (2) it is not a 'how to' book.
This is a collection of papers on advanced project management topics that experienced IT project managers will find enlightening and up-to-date with respect to techniques. The papers are divided into the following six topic areas:(1) Essential Concepts of Project Management, (2) Critical Factors for Project Quality, (3) Managing Business Relationships,(4) Effectively Managing Outsourced Projects, (5) Managing Special Projects and (6) Measuring and Improving Project Management Success.
What I like is that the book does not focus solely on software development projects, but covers areas that will interest project managements in infrastructure, oursourcing management and other IT functions. I also liked the following papers that address concerns of PMs from a larger perspective: "SEI CMM or ISO 9000: Which Is Right for Your Organization? ", "Incorporating Six Sigma Concepts into Systems Analysis" and "Managing Development in the Era of Large Complex Systems". In addition, there are many papers that address concerns common to all IT project managers, regardless of their functional area, including: "Business and IT: Developing Strategic Alliances", "Creating and Implementing a Balanced Measurement Program" and "Ten Ways to Improve Project Performance".
IT project managers will benefit greatly from the information presented in this book. It should be a part of any PMO library, and every consulting firm should have a copy available to its project managers.

Organizations that rely on computing technology for survival understand the critical importance of managing projects that meet strategic goals and objectives. The diversity of business globalization and electronic commerce combined with the unceasing pace of technical change continues to challenge efforts for more proficient project management techniques. Presenting the tools you need to meet the challenges of the new business environment, New Directions in Project Management covers best practices in all areas of managing software development projects - practices that have been determined by measurable results not vague ideologies.
