A must have guide for creating engaging and usable SharePoint 2010 branding
With SharePoint 2010, Microsoft has provided a more robust environment for creating collaboration and content management sites that rival any of the popular websites on the internet. Creating a branded SharePoint site involves understanding both traditional web design techniques as well as topics that are typically reserved for developers. This book bridges that gap by not only providing expert guidance for creating beautiful public facing and internal intranet sites but it also addresses the needs of those readers that only want to understand the basics enough to apply some style to their sites.
Things like creative design, the experience visitors have navigating your user interface, ease of use?these are all important branding considerations and not always intuitive. This unique book from a team of SharePoint branding experts lays it all out. The book is divided into four sections:
Introduction to SharePoint Branding: In this part you will learn about what SharePoint branding is and how the topic has changed since SharePoint 2007.
Branding Basics: This section is geared towards both getting started as well as being a guide for people that don?t want to dive super deep into the advanced topics of SharePoint branding. You will learn about how to plan for branding projects, including creating wireframes and creative mockups as well as gathering requirements and estimation. You will learn how to work with SharePoint Designer 2010, SharePoint 2010 themes, and SharePoint navigation as well as gain an understanding of the low and medium effort approaches to branding can be used to make SharePoint look more like your own visual style.
Advanced Branding: This is where you will learn about the more intricate techniques for making large changes to the SharePoint UI, such as cascading style sheets (CSS), master pages, page layouts, web parts and XSLT. You will also get an introduction to deploying SharePoint branding to production servers using solution packages (WSP).
Other Topics: Everything else that is related to SharePoint branding is discussed here, including working with the SharePoint 2010 ribbon and client side technologies such as the client object model, jQuery, and Silverlight.

Whether you want to make SharePoint look completely different or just make minor design changes, this expert guide will provide tips, techniques, and insights to get the job done.

The book came quickly and was in great shape!
I own two other books on the Security+ exam,( Sybex's CompTIA Security+ Review Guide: SY0-201 and CompTIA Security+ Exam Cram (1st Edition)) This one from Syngress is clearly the better study guide! Loved the chapter on virtual technology. They cover the exam completely and in some areas they give more than scope of the exam.
I'm very impressed with the way exam objectives are clearly outlined and detailed to the CompTIA way of doing things. It's one thing to know IT security, but for the exam you also need to know how the CompTIA exam author(s) think. If your looking for a quick easy study guide to pass the Security+ exam I think this is one of the best books to pick-up.

Power Systems Analysis (2nd Edition) Review

Power Systems Analysis (2nd Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a teacher and researcher working in the power systems area for more than 35 years, I have great pleasure in welcoming a revised edition of Art Bergen's classic book on Power Systems Analysis. When the first edition came out in 1986, it was a trend setter for those entering an academic career. The presentation was fresh and different with challenging problems added to each chapter. The book combined control system concepts with power system models and provided insight into dynamic operation of power systems.
In the last three decades, power system analysis has made great progress and mathematical techniques of optimization and matrix analysis have become entrenched in problem solution. Matlab has become de facto tool for use in the class room. The revised edition recognizes these facts, and without affecting the originality of the first edition supplements material that is indispensable to any student of power systems.
It is a difficult balancing act to provide the required mathematical knowledge without losing track of the practical nature of power systems. I feel that Vittal has achieved this.
There is a number of other books on power system analysis in the market, but the approach in most of the cases is similar to the classic book of Stevenson.
I would recommend the book for a senior level power system course in a 4-year program and as a reference to graduate students requiring a foundation in power systems.

Writing CGI Applications with Perl Review

Writing CGI Applications with Perl
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are a very large number of Perl CGI books in the shops. Unfortunately the number of good Perl CGI books is far smaller. I'm happy to report that this book is one of them.
The problem, of course, with most Perl CGI books is that they are written by people who just don't know very much Perl. That's certainly not the case here. Both Kevin and Brent are well-respected members of the Perl community and they know what they are talking about when it comes to writing CGI programs in Perl.
Another common mistake in Perl CGI books is that the authors try to take people who know a bit of HTML and teach them programming, Perl and CGI all at the same time. The authors of this book realise that this approach is likely to lead to, at best, patchy understanding of any of these concepts so they aim there book at people who are already programmers and who have some knowledge of Perl. This means that they can concentrate of teaching the parts of Perl that are useful when writing CGI programs.
One corner that is often cut when discussing CGI programming is security. This is a very dangerous approach to take as a badly written CGI program can leave your web server open to attack from anyone on the Internet. That's not a mistake that is made here as the authors introduce security in chapter 2. Add to that the fact that the code examples all use -w, use strict and CGI.pm and the book is already head and shoulders above most of its competition.
Early chapters look at common CGI requirements such as file uploads and cookies. Each chapter is full of well written (and well-explained) sample code. The example of an access counter in chapter 6 even locks the file containing the current count - this is possibly a first in a Perl CGI book!
By the middle of the book we have already moved beyond simple CGI programming and are looking at mod_perl. This chapter covers both the "faux-CGI" Apache::Registry module and also writing complete mod_perl handlers.
In the second half of the book we start to look at some bigger examples. The authors present a web-based email system and even a shopping cart. In order to fit these examples into their respective chapters a couple of corners have been cut, but there's enough information there to enable anyone to write the complete systems.
Chapter 13 introduces the HTML::Mason module as a way to separate content from presentation. It's obvious that the author's are big fans of this module and this leads to my only real criticism of the book. At no point do they mention the fact that the same benefits can be gained from using any of half a dozen templating systems found on the CPAN. I would have been a lot happier if they had mentioned things like Text::Template, HTML::Template and the Template Toolkit before picking HTML::Mason as the system for their example.
There are then two more long chapters with examples of a document management system and image manipulation software. Once more the code in these examples would serve as a greating starting point for anyone wanting to implement something along these lines. The last chapter looks at XML and, in particular, the use of RSS files to provide data feeds to other web sites.
All in all this is a very useful book for someone wanting to write web-based applications using Perl. It's packed full of good advice and code that follows all of the best practices for writing CGI programs in Perl. This book won't teach you Perl, but if you've read Learning Perl or Elements of Programming with Perl then you'll find this book easy enough to follow.

Writing CGI Applications with Perl is a start-to-finish guide to accomplishing key Web development tasks by fully using the power of Perl and CGI together. Using extensive examples, careful line-by-line explanations, and skill-stretching exercises, it not only provides useful cut-and-paste code: it also teaches the practical skills and techniques you'll need to build virtually any CGI-based application. Kevin Meltzer and Brent Michalski cover every key area of Web application development with Perl: database integration, form and file handling, security, e-mail, graphics, and more. The book's in-depth coverage includes: working with HTML Web forms and obtaining user input; placing cookies and tracking clicks; connecting to POP3 e-mail servers; embedding Perl in HTML using HTML::Mason; remote file management across the Web; creating dynamic images; and working with XML. The book also provides detailed explanations and examples of working with Perl DBI, as well as start-to-finish coverage of configuring and using the popular mod_perl Apache module. All of the sample code will be available at a companion web site.

Programming Embedded Systems: With C and GNU Development Tools, 2nd Edition Review

Programming Embedded Systems: With C and GNU Development Tools, 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Presents a good introduction to embedded system programming; no complaints there. However, their choice of development kit is poor. The Arcom (now EuroTech) kit is $600, rather than the $300 stated in the book. And it took almost 3 weeks for them to respond to a quote request. Fortunately, there are kits available from other vendors (BiPom, Olimex, etc.) which can be substituted for less than $300. However, the impracticality of using the Arcom kit robs the book of its purpose of being a hands-on, guided tutorial.

If you have programming experience and a familiarity with C--the dominant language in embedded systems--Programming Embedded Systems, Second Edition is exactly what you need to get started with embedded software. This software is ubiquitous, hidden away inside our watches, DVD players, mobile phones, anti-lock brakes, and even a few toasters. The military uses embedded software to guide missiles, detect enemy aircraft, and pilot UAVs. Communication satellites, deep-space probes, and many medical instruments would have been nearly impossible to create without embedded software.

The first edition of Programming Embedded Systems taught the subject to tens of thousands of people around the world and is now considered the bible of embedded programming. This second edition has been updated to cover all the latest hardware designs and development methodologies.

The techniques and code examples presented here are directly applicable to real-world embedded software projects of all sorts. Examples use the free GNU software programming tools, the eCos and Linux operating systems, and a low-cost hardware platform specially developed for this book. If you obtain these tools along with Programming Embedded Systems, Second Edition, you'll have a full environment for exploring embedded systems in depth. But even if you work with different hardware and software, the principles covered in this book apply.

Whether you are new to embedded systems or have done embedded work before, you'll benefit from the topics in this book, which include:

How building and loading programs differ from desktop or server computers
Basic debugging techniques--a critical skill when working with minimally endowed embedded systems
Handling different types of memory
Interrupts, and the monitoring and control of on-chip and external peripherals
Determining whether you have real-time requirements, and whether your operating system and application can meet those requirements
Task synchronization with real-time operating systems and embedded Linux
Optimizing embedded software for size, speed, and power consumption
Working examples for eCos and embedded Linux

So whether you're writing your first embedded program, designing the latest generation of hand-held whatchamacalits, or managing the people who do, this book is for you. Programming Embedded Systems will help you develop the knowledge and skills you need to achieve proficiency with embedded software.

Praise for the first edition:
"This lively and readable book is the perfect introduction for those venturing into embedded systems software development for the first time. It provides in one place all the important topics necessary to orient programmers to the embedded development process. --Lindsey Vereen, Editor-in-Chief, Embedded Systems Programming

Mobile Design and Development: Practical Concepts and Techniques for Creating Mobile Sites and Web Apps (Animal Guide) Review

Mobile Design and Development: Practical Concepts and Techniques for Creating Mobile Sites and Web Apps (Animal Guide)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Original review written by Pasquale Granato, JUG Lugano, [...] First of all, let's clear the field from a possible misunderstanding: this book is not about general mobile design and development but it is about web mobile development. The author states a precise, despite arguable, opinion that brutally said is: do not code native applications but prefer as much as you can web applications. This statement is largely discussed across the book and everyone can make up his own opinion about this. Mine is that currently times are not mature to consider to write just web applications both because mobile browser are not powerful enough (on average) to assure a smooth experience on all devices and because of the lack of a good way to make money from your web app.
The first three chapters of the book are a really good introduction to the history of mobile, to the mobile current status and to the reasons that should drive an approach to the mobile development. These chapters are a well written recap of the status of the art and present a lot of data useful to understand the global situation. Unfortunately the book is printed in black and white and several pie-charts and graphs are pretty much impossible to read.
The central part of the book, chapters from four to ten, is devoted to design issues and, despite the lack of an in-depth examination of some subjects, offers a pretty good survey of the topic.
The final part of the book is slightly more technical covering topics such as XHTML-MP, CSS, HTML5, device adaptation, etc. The problem here is that there is nothing really practical and all remains at an introductory level. To give you an example, a capital topic in device adaptation like Media Queries is covered in half a page with just a trivial example. Furthermore the author seems to be unaware of things like XwapProfile or UAProf (that is probably a obsolete and unreliable method but deserve at least a notation).
My biggest complain is anyway about the author's obsession for the iPhone. The Apple's jewel is referenced continuously and always with great glorification: the word iPhone recurs 99 times in the book and out of the 115 pictures in the book as many as 37 depict an iPhone. An entire chapter is devoted to iPhone web applications development even though most of the concepts presented here are common to other modern devices.
This is overall a decent introductory book, if you are completely new to the field, and it's packed with many good advices but do not expect much from the practical techniques promised by the title.

CCNA Wireless Official Exam Certification Guide (CCNA IUWNE 640-721) Review

CCNA Wireless Official Exam Certification Guide (CCNA IUWNE 640-721)
Average Reviews:

Perhaps this text would be appropriate for somebody seeking the CCNA Wireless certification, but this book seriously falls short on wireless and radio fundamentals. In the opening chapters the author introduces the concept of phase before he even describes a waveform and its components. It also contains a lot of inaccuracies. He goes into detail about the differences between DSSS bit rates and their associated encoding techniques but barely describes OFDM or 802.11n at all.
For those seeking knowledge on how to pass the CCNA Wireless exam and how to configure Cisco AP components, this book is a necessary acquisition but those who are seeking solid entry knowledge into the world of 802.11 administration should check out the CWNA book from Sybex.

note: I submitted my review yesterday and incorrectly put the publishers name instead or Horton in the review. I have corrected that error below
Excellent overview and covers the in depth considerations necessary for any successful WBT program
I do consulting in education on WBT and I am a Director of a WBT Consulting Certification Program and consequently usually do not have the time to write reviews. However, in this instance I had to take the time. Horton has done an excellent job of providing an overview of WBT and an in depth study of the instructional design related to a WBT program. He covers most of the issues you will be facing setting up WBT and his book should be on your shelf and one of the first that you read if you are just getting started in WBT or in need of further guidance in this area. He doesn't go into the practical development side of the how to do the graphics, programming, and Web architecture, but that is OK because that is a separate area in itself. If you need to know most of the considerations involved with WBT, then this is definitely your book. After you have read his book sit down and use his suggestions to plan your WBT program and you will not go wrong. He also addresses very practical issues in the instructional design of the WBT program and the courses within the program, how to set them up and conduct them. I can't say enough about how well he covers these topics. If you need a book that will give you ideas and make you think about your WBT program and the instructional design and development within your upcoming or current WBT program, his book will do all of that and more. His book will definitely make you think and will provide insightful assistance for WBT program managers, WBT instructional designers, WBT course development teams and WBT instructors alike. I particularly liked the instructional design of his book; it is full of illustrations that are as thought provoking as his words. The book is truly an idea generator. It is an easy read for a newcomer and a must read for the WBT professional.

System Center Operations Manager 2007 Unleashed Review

System Center Operations Manager 2007 Unleashed
Average Reviews:

Anyone that uses System Center Operations Manager knows that the documentation is a bit sparse. This book more than makes up for that lack of information. The authors have created a very thorough and complete set of information starting with outlining the reason for SCOM and the underlying architecture. They spend a great deal of time and effort describing how to install and configure the tool. My favorite sections start about half way through when they get into configuring all the rules and monitors to gather data and respond to alerts. The chapter on reporting was also very helpful. They even include a small section on other management packs in the Appendixes, with information on the one that interests me most, SQL Server. The Appendix also has a great walkthrough on step by step configuring and tuning your own management pack.
I can't say this is a must own for anyone using SCOM, but if you've been floundering a bit, as I have, or you're just getting started, this is a fantastic resource to get you on your feet and get your SCOM system up and running.

Information Nation: Seven Keys to Information Management Compliance Review

Information Nation: Seven Keys to Information Management Compliance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have often found it difficult to engage top IT management with executive management and legal in a comprehensive information management program that can include records management, imaging, document management, and so on. This book provides an easy to read framework for looking at these issues from each of these different perspectives as well as those of Risk Management. In essence, the book provides a set of comfortable "corrective lenses" that let each of these entities share a common vision for the integrity of the organization's information compliance responsibilities.
The authors include many anecdotal narratives in each chapter. These are highlighted with grey background and feature case studies of companies that did or did not manage their information properly and the results of their actions. These break up the chapters nicely and help make the reading go more quickly. The reports of both companies and individuals having been punished will certainly catch the attention of many top executives.
The book is filled with practical steps to get your company's information management compliance program successfully underway. It is easy to read and a great book to share. Highly recommended for anyone involved in Records Management or Risk Management.

Electrical Power Equipment Maintenance and Testing (Power Engineering (Willis))
Average Reviews:

This book provides the most comprehensive overview I have found thus far for engineers and field professionals involved in the maintenance and testing electrical power systems and equipment. The author presents the materials very effectively. The book is both an indispensible resource for the practicing engineer, as well as an ideal training tool for teachers and students engaged in primary and continuing education in this field.

Linux Administration Handbook (2nd Edition) Review

Linux Administration Handbook (2nd Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first edition of Unix System Administration was a classic. The updated versions have been split into a linux-only version and the original, pan-Unix treatment (including Linux--just not as many variants of Linux as this book covers). I bought the Linux one, but now I wish I had the updated pan-Unix book. The authors' strength is their knowledge of Unix fundamentals, not the (ever-changing) details of various Linux distros. You're better off learning from them how vendor Unices are different in major ways from each other and from Linux. Finally, the authors don't seem nearly as well informed about Linux as they do about the older Unices. While their older book's advice was bulletproof, in this one they miss some important information. The most serious example is their recommendation to use 'dump' for filesystem backups, when Linux Torvalds has explicitly announced that it's not safe to use. 90% of this book is the same as the Unix book, so it's not a loss either way, but I'd recommend you get your Linux info fresh off the net, or in some other book series that's updated more frequently.

Thanks to the ongoing efforts of thousands of Linux developers, Linux is more ready than ever for deployment at the frontlines of the real world. Unique and highly recommended."—Jonathan Corbet, cofounder, LWN.net"Nemeth et al. is the overall winner for Linux administration: it's intelligent, full of insights, and looks at the implementation of concepts." —Peter Salus, editorial director, Matrix.net
