This book was almost good. but there are just too many mistakes. Lots and lots of typos, And I mean big ones that should have gotten caught. I have read the book twice now and the second time through I have found many more subtle errors. You will read a set of technical specifications and then on the next page a chart or graph will contradict the previously read material. You are now left with deciding which is right, and that's only if you notice it. Many mistakes are obvious some are not and others are just very confusing and make you scratch you head for a few minutes trying to figure out what they mean. The CD that comes with it is worthless. It has 30 questions, and when you go to buy more they want $109.00 for 200 more questions. wow. I found 300 practice questions from simulation exams for $27.00. So In short I would recommend one of the other books that have come out for network+ 2009 N10-1004 exam even though I haven't read them. Mike meyers just came out with one that has 200 practice questions on CD I don't know if its good But it can't be worse that this book.

It's a book for very, very beginners. The informations are well described, but as for the shortage of the book itself, there is not too much to learn from this book. It is only for a first contact with the subject.
A reading from Interantional standards (270001, etc.) is more useful and not too much difficult.
On the web you can find more useful informations.

This title covers the implementation issues of the information security standards up to and including audits. Pivotal to this it covers the installation of an ISMS, or Information Security Management System. This is defined as "That part of the overall management system, based on a business risk approach, to establish, implement, operate, monitor, review, maintain and improve information security. The management system includes organizational structure, policies, planning activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources."

CompTIA Network+ Certification Study Guide, Fourth Edition (Certification Press) Review

CompTIA Network+ Certification Study Guide, Fourth Edition (Certification Press)

While this is an informative book, especially concerning Microsoft networking utilities and features, there were definitely some areas on the Network+ 2009 N10-004 test (just took it today, and passed, but not as well as I would have liked) that were not well covered in this book. The areas that could definitely use more attention were CIDR-based sub-netting and physical facility equipment and tools. There was a lot of emphasis on troubleshooting scenarios as well. While the book (content/quizzes/test) focuses many questions around Microsoft tools/utilities, I experienced next to no Microsoft-centric questions on the actual test. (The test is actually very vendor neutral)
I realize it is not easy to create a test prep book like this, and I appreciate authors like Glen providing these resources. But at the same time, it is hard for any book to provide all possible knowledge needed for a test like this.

CompTIA Network+ Certification Kit: (Exam: N10-004)
Average Reviews:

As others have said before me, Todd Lammle's book gives you everything you need to pass the N10-004 exam, while giving you knowledge outside of the exam, which could surely come in handy in the professional world. I really like his style of writing, which was humorous at times, and explained things in an easy to understand manner. The chapter on subnetting was especially well done. I've read some other explanations of how to subnet, and his was by far the best. I also read Bill Ferguson's book, which really cemented the knowledge I needed to know for the exam. There were also some parts where I felt Bill did a better job of explaining things, like on the structure of MAC addresses. After I read Mr Furguson's book, I went back and reread Lammle's and was finally able to understand what he was he was trying to say. I haven't got into the street smarts book yet, but I intend to when I buy routers and switches to study for the CCNA cert. If you buy this book, and you take the time to learn it thoroughly you will definitely pass. I got a score of 829.

The Internet for Physicians Review

This is not a bad introduction to the Internet for doctors. The best part is the extensive bibliography. I found the chapter on medical informatics particulary interesting.

Click Here to see more reviews about: The Internet for Physicians

Like the Internet itself, interest in computing (both local and distant) has grown exponentially. The rapidly changing role of the Internet has resulted in three very different editions of The Internet for Physicians. The first edition attempted to introduce the concept of information transfer and communication and point the way toward a tool of the future. The second edition attempted to assuage trepidation in the use of this emerging tool and suggest the why and wherefore of being connected. The needs that drove those goals have almost completely disappeared. As a result, the bulk of this edition is more focused on the medical aspect of the Internet and its use, and less on the nuts and bolts of connecting and communication through the Web. It has been revamped, reorganized, and expanded to include 30% more content and 90 new illustrations.New to the third edition is an entire section dedicated to Medicine and the Web, with chapters discussing patient education and information, what your patients are seeing on the web, finding quality resources, including clinical-trial and evidence-based medicine sites, how to search and use Pun Med, telemedicine, continuing medical education, medical literature and informatics, applications of on-line journals and submissions, and much more.

Voice over IP Security Review

Voice over IP Security
Average Reviews:

I have been carrying this book around with me for a couple weeks now and had a couple long plane flights as well. This is a difficult book to review. The author clearly knows his stuff and the threat treatment is great. However, the material is all over the map. The subtitle talks about good security practices and the book is short on that to be candid. Bottom line, if you are considering a VoIP deployment or wondering how secure/robust your existing deployment is, this is a must read.
My favorite "I never thought of that" scenario in the book was a simple power outage. What if you have twenty thousand IP phones and the power drops . . . then when it is restored all 20k phones start banging the server causing an outage.

Voice over IP SecuritySecurity best practices derived from deep analysis of the latest VoIP network threatsPatrick ParkVoIP security issues are becoming increasingly serious because voice networks and services cannot be protected from recent intelligent attacks and fraud by traditional systems such as firewalls and NAT alone. After analyzing threats and recent patterns of attacks and fraud, consideration needs to be given to the redesign of secure VoIP architectures with advanced protocols and intelligent products, such as Session Border Controller (SBC). Another type of security issue is how to implement lawful interception within complicated service architectures according to government requirements.Voice over IP Security focuses on the analysis of current and future threats, the evaluation of security products, the methodologies of protection, and best practices for architecture design and service deployment. All new Cisco exams for the CCNP certification are being released and new study tools are also hitting the market at the same time. Trying to find good and accurate material can be a challenging as the exam itself and that's why this flash card and practice exam set should be used as a final prep tool.
There is about 500 cards per exam and for the most part the answers are complete, although a few of the cards have the correct answers but explanation as to why it is correct and this should fixed in the next release.
There is also a cd-rom with the book has about 1000 flash cards and 1000 practice quesitons, so this should give you plenty ofpractice material to work with. One thing I have found is that flash card studying does make passing exmas easier.
Overall a very good study tool to have around and once Cisco Press releases the study guide books this becomes an even more valuable final study tool.

CCNA Virtual Lab, Titanium Edition 2.0: (Exam 640-802) Review

CCNA Virtual Lab, Titanium Edition 2.0: (Exam 640-802)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first time I used this product, I thought that I might be typing in something wrong. I then attempted to copy actual command line text into the router sim and found that half of the commands were not supported. I went online, and noticed that the majority of the most important commands were not supporte by this router sim software. I recommend that you do not purchase this software. Only purchase software that allows you to fully practice all commands. This is the only way to make sure you can obtain your CCNA and be able to apply it in the workforce. This software does not allow that at all. I am very disappointed in William Tedder's software.
The next issue was with the publisher of this software. I did not deactivate this software before attempting to reinstall it. I was told that I would need to pay $10 in order to receive a new serial number. I have already returned this product and am requesting a refund from Amazon. I am now going to carefully shop and make sure the next router sim I purchase does not have all these restrictions. It is ridiculous to pay $120, to have the majority of the commands not supported, and then to pay extra money to reactivate the product.

This virtual network simulator is ideal for candidates studying for the new CCNA exam (640-802) who cannot afford thousands of dollars to set up their own Cisco home lab. Offering hands-on practice with routers and switches is critical for success on the CCNA exam, and this simulator uses drag-and-drop technology to create a simulated lab using an unlimited number of routers and switches. Also included are lab exercises and guidance to help students experiment with hundreds of configuration commands built into the simulator. Improving Web Application Security: Threats and Countermeasures Review

Improving Web Application Security: Threats and Countermeasures
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am in the business of writing secure e-biz apps and I found the security and countermeasure strategies in this book to be very thorough.
Now, why the 4 stars? Two reasons - 1. The author(s) are very repetitive. I read the section on countermeasures to SQL injection attacks 3 times in the book.
2. The countermeasures are demonstrated adequately but the attacks are not. For instance, what to do to thwart SQL injection attacks is explained with some examples. But what really is a SQL injection attack; plain description is not enough? Some non-trivial examples of those make sense because then you know the reason for deploying the countermeasures; what are you saving yourself against? Sort of, identifying the enemy.
Nevertheless, a great, comprehensive and practical tutorial.

CompTIA Linux+ Complete Study Guide: Exams LX0-101 and LX0-102 Review

CompTIA Linux+ Complete Study Guide: Exams LX0-101 and LX0-102
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book on Amazon when it came out a few months ago. I have the older Linux+ book (for the previous version of the Linux+ exam) but that version of CompTIA Linux+ is ending as of Oct 31 2010 (it consisted of a single 90 question exam - equiv of 6 months of Linux experience). So I was undecided on what exactly I should do: A.) Push it and take the existing test before Oct 31 2010 or B.) Just take the new Linux+ exam (actually two tests) powered by LPI. Since I had heard that the LPI version is much more comprehensive, I figured I'd go that route. Well let me tell you this book and from what I can surmise the new exam as well, is no joke. This book is way more in-depth and detailed than the previous Linux+ books. It is now recommended by CompTIA that you first achieve your A+ and your Network+ certification, as well as have 1 year of Linux admin level experience before attempting Linux+. If you want a taste of what this study book is like the very first chapter starts out with listing commands and explaining regular expressions. I've been working with Linux for some time so this was not a problem for me but if you haven't used Linux before you might want to brush up on your basics before you consider this one... The older books started out explaining what Linux was and what GNU licensing was about, etc (intro type stuff).
I have not taken the exams yet but I will report on how well I do after..

Novell GroupWise 6.5 Administrator's Guide
Average Reviews:

You can probably get by with the Groupwise newsgroup and the TIDs on Novell's website to configure and maintain your GW system, but its much easier to have all the info you need in one place. I bungled a test install and then another one, and then got it right when I read the book and understood why I was doing what I was doing.
As for Novell's viability into the future, I'll stop buying and using Novell products when either I am dead or Novell is dead and not before. Novell products aren't as simple to set up as MS, but they are far more functional, robust, scalable and stable than any of the swill that the beast of Redmond pumps out.
Buy Netware. Buy Groupwise, and buy the guides. Fire your MSCE's and hire CNEs.

CISSP All-in-One Exam Guide, Fifth Edition Review

CISSP All-in-One Exam Guide, Fifth Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is no simple formula to prepare for the CISSP certification, and no single resource which can guarantee success on the certification exam since every applicant's background is unique. However, this book (fifth edition) was my only resource in preparing for the exam and I passed on my first attempt (April 24, 2010).
I spent 60+ hours in preparation for the exam... that's 60+ hours of DEDICATED individual study using this book and CD, not 60+ hours spent web surfing during lunch hours or commercial breaks. My recent background is in middle management, with 20 years experience in network architecture and data security, so I already had a firm technical foundation for the test areas dealing with protocols and encryption variations. I also have an MS in Computer Science. Nonetheless, the exam was so broad, with topics covering general principles and concepts, that I could have prepared twice as long and still left the exam with questions about the outcome.
My personal opinion is that formal classroom instruction, through one of the many organizations offering CISSP preparation courses, is a worthwhile companion to Shon Harris' book. A study group is also a good idea. You will not obtain CISSP certification if you take the exam without preparation. This book (fifth edition) was sufficient, but not 100% comprehensive, to prepare me for passing the CISSP test.
Note: Some reviewers do not appreciate Shon's frequent analogies and humor. Most of her analogies helped me internalize the complex topics, but that's my personal learning style. The efforts at humor were generally awful, but every once in a while she was subtle and brilliant enough to make me laugh out loud. Working through Shon's unique writing style was not a problem for me... I actually found it refreshing.

Project Management: Best Practices for IT Professionals Review

Project Management: Best Practices for IT Professionals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is not a book about project management, rather it is a collection of IT project management best practices that will guarantee success if they are incorporated into your project management bag of tricks.
Mr. Murch has classified the best practices by providing a set of general practices and a set of specific ones that are aligned to each phase of the system development life cycle. This organization allows you to use this book as a resource guide when planning, estimating and scheduling the project, and as a desk reference when controlling it.
While some of the best practices are widely known (although not as widely practiced), the real gems in this book are: associating tasks with deliverables (too often the deliverable part of the task is not identified during planning, which results in tasks that do not contribute to project goals - if a task does not produce an associated deliverable you need to question why the task is included), project status reporting (the sample status report is excellent, except for one glaring omission discussed below), and the focus on quality assurance and configuration management metrics, which encompasses factors that are frequently missing from IT project controls.
The project status report example is a highlight of this book. Mr. Murch's proposed format will provide a succinct summary of a project's health, and give the project manager, his or her team and the sponsor an ongoing view of the project's status. What mars this otherwise perfect format is an integrated view of cost and schedule performance is completely missing from the picture. He comes close by discussing estimate at completion vs. budget in the project cost performance of the report format, but does not connect it to the schedule performance. A true best practice is to compute a schedule performance index (Budgeted Cost of Work Performed divided by Budgeted Cost of Work Scheduled), and a cost performance index (Budgeted Cost of Work Performed divided by Actual Cost of Work Performed). These link schedule and cost performance and show a true picture of the project's health. I hope this gets rectified in the next edition of this excellent book.
Every chapter of this book contains at least one or more gems that will make you a better project manager. I think every IT project manager should have a copy close by. We should applaud Mr. Murch's efforts for successfully cataloging and documenting these IT project management best practices. Despite the incomplete picture his project status report gives this book deserves 5 stars.

Network+ Study Guide & Practice Exams: Exam N10-003 Review

Network+ Study Guide and Practice Exams: Exam N10-003
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Among so many books on the same topic, this one stands out for the quality of the information and expertise of the authors. The three Contributing Authors, the Lead Author (who helps develop CompTIA exams), and the Technical Editor each have the ***real-world experience*** to back their alphabet soup list of certifications.
Their explanations are fluid and well connected to the Exam Objective at hand. The 'just because I say so' explanations one finds in some of the other exam prep guides are missing from this one. The 'Exam Warnings' sprinkled throughout are particularly helpful at pointing out tricky bits of information you will be tested on.
Study well, complete the self-tests at the end of each chapter, and you're bound to succeed.
