CCIE Routing and Switching Flash Cards
Reviewer: Glenn Bradley, Senior Network Engineer
Reviewer Certification: CCDA, CCNA, CCNP, ISSP
Rating: 4 out of 5
This text and flash card format is a great "last 30 days before the test" tool. If you've been preparing for your written or have plans to, remember this book. I chose a method that may work for some and not for others.
I took the four exam method to achieve my CCNP. I did this because it was more important to me to have an in depth understanding of the four primary disciplines than it was to get through the process quickly. I didn't want any gaps in my knowledge base as I prepared for the CCIE written.
I came straight off the CCNP completion and went into a 90 day high intensity self study program that basically occupied all my free time. I passed with (a little) room to spare but would have loved to have this book for my last 30 days of prep time.
Be sure to understand that this book is a study aid. It will in no way prepare you for the exam in and of itself. However, used in conjunction with a solid, well rounded study plan, it will increase your chances of success substantially.
The limited text preceding each chapter and the more in depth discussions of specific technologies that follow each chapter are well written and right to the point. I did not feel that I was reading a lot of fluff that some authors use to make it appear that there is greater value in the material being presented.
I give the book 4 out of 5. As mentioned earlier; the audience would include those just completing their CCNP and planning to go directly for the CCIE written in order to hang onto the more elusive details that we all learn just before an exam. Some folks may be planning to take the written directly as they are already functioning at the CCNP level. This text will help fill in the blanks they may have by not having the benefit of preparing for and taking the CCNP tests.

As an online training developer, I found this book to be very helpful. It combines theories with practices with several online models for large group training, K-12 online curriculum development, and learner differences. The theory part is also informative. It introduces several theoretical frameworks that can be applied to a spectrum of learners and learning situations.

JavaSpaces™ Principles, Patterns, and Practice Review

JavaSpaces™ Principles, Patterns, and Practice
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great introduction to the JavaSpaces technology, making it accessible to anyone with a basic understanding of Java. The main concepts are thoroughly and simply explained and the programming examples are very well developed and easy to follow. This book would be suitable for introducing undergraduates to basic operating systems concepts such as process synchronization and interprocess communication, as well as to some of the more exciting network based applications, such as distributed transactions and collaborative applications.
It's clear that JavaSpaces technology can greatly simplify the teaching of important operating system and networking concepts such as thread synchronication and interprocess communication. As someone who has taught these courses, I've found that students have a hard time dealing with system semaphore and socket primitives. Quite often the basic concepts you're trying to teach get lost within a forest of implementation details. Not so with JavaSpaces. Check out the nicely developed Dining Philosophers and Readers/Writers examples in Chapter 4. The basic semaphore class is very simple to implement in JavaSpaces, which allows the discussion to focus on synchronization issues. Ditto for the basic Channel classes developed in Chapter 5. As all of these examples show, the use of JavaSpaces technology raises the level of abstraction, thereby making distributed programming much more widely accessible. As further evidence of this, consider the ease with which a very sophisticated internet messenger service is developed in Chapter 10. Making this kind of application accessible to undergraduates is quite impressive.
This is a great book, and I will almost certainly use it the next time I teach our networking course.

E-Business Best Practices: Leveraging Technology for Business Advantage Review

E-Business Best Practices: Leveraging Technology for Business Advantage
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
E-Business Best Practices. You are probably wondering: have any best practices been defined yet for E-Business? Well in truth, they probably haven't which is why this book is not about specific best practices but the types of software technology that will help you get there. It's full of simple ideas to help you implement your own drive towards best practice in your business.
The content is targeted at operational business managers, not technologists. It is intended to introduce topics and technologies from a business management perspective, not teach you how to program. However, the content is most likely to appeal to business managers in medium sized enterprises who can't rely on others to implement best practices for them.
Hopefully after reading this book you will have enough knowledge about fundamental E-Business technologies to make you dangerous. Dangerous that is to the salespeople, consultants, pundits and so forth who think E-Business is some kind of mysterious black art that only the initiated can master. It's just business but done better through leveraging the right technology.

e-Business Essentials: Successful e-Business Practices - From the Experts at PC Magazine Review

Average Reviews:

Confused over jargons and buzzwords such as CRM, MRO, B2B, B2E, e-Procurement? Loss in conversations about doing business over the Internet? Need a jump-start in understanding what e-Business and e-Commerce is all about? Then look no further. "E-Business Essentials" by Frank J Derfler may be the book you are looking for.
This book is probably the first of its kind that stresses on the importance of relationships in e-Business - relationships between your company and its customers, suppliers and employees. These relationships are the cornerstone to the three major building blocks of e-Business, Business to Consumer, Business to Business and Business to Employees. Each of these building blocks is discussed in details in its own section, substantiated with interesting real world case studies.
This book does not attempt to be a `how-to' manual. There are little or no technical design or architecture diagrams and definitely no code examples. Its main emphasis is on the `whys' and the `whats' of e-Business. Buzzwords and important concepts are conspicuously marked and defined in the margins of pages that discuss them.
Although written primarily for those with little or no exposure to the subject, it is by no means a 'Dummies' book. While it is written in layman's language and a style that is easy to understand, there are enough details to challenge the intellect. It will definitely lay a good foundation in the understanding of the fundamentals. Even those who have been in e-Business for a while will find this book refreshing and well organized.

Wireless Security and Privacy: Best Practices and Design Techniques Review

Wireless Security and Privacy: Best Practices and Design Techniques
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The title of a book needs to be a contract the authors make with the reader. This book is an introduction to wireless with a general coverage of security and a privacy chapter glommed on dressed up as a wireless book. Wireless is such a complex and important issue, that is just wrong to do. The afterword, the future of wireless is essentially content free.
The book is well written, well researched, uses layout and illustrations well and if you are a novice to information security is probably worth hauling on the plane to read.
However, even then beware, one of the major topics appears to be invented by the authors and is passed on as security craft. The I-ADD section is a feature of the book. I had never heard of I-ADD and I do not have a life, all I do is information security. I tried to look it up with google, no results at least through the 3rd page. I wrote ten of my friends in the field, no hits. I tried to look it up in the "bible", Dr. Matt Bishop's 1,000 page, five years in the making, Computer Security Art and Science. I went through Wireless Security and Privacy's bibliography and while there might be a reference I missed, it certainly is not supported to the degree it should be to be so strongly featured in the book. I completely agree that we need thought models to help understand the complex issues of information security, but it would be much more appropriate to use something standard such as Plan Do Check Act (PDCA) from BS7799/ISO-17799.
If you are in the risk management business, the targets and roles that are enumerated in chapter 9 could be worth the price of the book for your trade.
In general, if you are interested in wireless, I would pass on this one, but there is another book by the same major publisher, Pearson Press, How Secure Is Your Wireless Network? by Lee Barkin that is worth a look.

Electronic Texts in the Humanities: Principles and Practice Review

Electronic Texts in the Humanities: Principles and Practice

Hockey has been involved in the use of computers for the humanities since the 1980s. This is her most recent book. It is directed towards a reader majoring in the humanities, who needs some guidance with computing. The book is brief, and summarises what can be done in terms of preparing manuscripts for journals, many of which nowadays offer and may actually prefer electronic submission.
But Hockey also discusses how once papers have been put into electronic form, they can be analysed. At various levels of semantic/linguistic parsing. The computer science jargon is minimised, for which some readers should be grateful. The ideas are explained clearly.

The IC Bus: From Theory to Practice Review

The IC Bus: From Theory to Practice
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Regretfully, I have to say that "The I2C Bus from Theory to Practice" book is a bit of a disappointment for me. I've been reading these past 2 months the Philip's I2C related documents in PDF format, which I downloaded from the Internet. It seemed to me at the time that apart from the description of the protocol, there are some notes and maybe "hidden" facts, which are not described in the formal description of the protocol and so, I started to look for a book on the subject. Luckily I found one book (the only book) and hoped that it would elaborate on the I2C subject. I discovered that indeed this book justified its title and gave the required theory description, and practical examples as promised. But the theory is mostly copied/pasted out of the Philip's I2C bus protocol description with some additional notes added to it, and the overall description is nicely divided into chapters and chapter-parts which is maybe more readable for the 1'st time reader. As for the I2C practice, or practical information, again I was disappointed to find that some parts of the Philip's PDF's were inserted again ( as the PCF8584) which is almost fully described in the book. I think it would have been more appropriate to point out pointers for these PDF's (although it was mentioned once in the book that some material is taken from these documents) on the Philip's Internet site. I think the authors meant to give some practical examples by that, but I felt that it was just for filling out some more pages on the book (like an LP record's last 3 or 4 song tracks.) The appendix of the book was very disappointing and I didn't understand why I need these "printed circuits" low quality prints at the end of the book (pages 287-294) or maybe it was just to fill some blanks. The SW examples given out with the floppy disk were not so well documented and also some of it was in French anyways. All in all, this book was not what I thought it would be and that is a shame because it is the only book, which I found on the I2C subject on the Web. Maybe the authors wrote most of the documents in the Philip's PDF's and wanted to publish it in hard copy... (see title of this letter.) But, if you did purchase this book, you can always put it on the bookshelf because it has a nice respectable hard cover.

Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Flash Card Practice Kit Review

Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Flash Card Practice Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A good tool to help in the questions it asks.
The test engine is broken however. It has multiple choice buttons where you clearly need to select more than one answer, yet can only choose one. Some questions are totally wrong, so verify each wrong answer you get from the test engine before you count it or commit it to memory for the CCNA.
It is good in helping you understand the type of questions you will encounter, from CLI, to move boxes around, to type out the answers. (Spelling does count and I have been told it does on the CCNA as well.) The fact that if you type "router" and it wants "routers" is just wrong and messed up. Many questions have been missed because I typed "Spanning-tree" and it wanted "Spanning-tree protocol". Note it will not take STP either. IMHO: A serious flaw in Cisco's testing and this flash card kit. One note I recommend. Hand Write all your flash cards. Don't rely on the print outs. You will have better retention.
For the money, it is worth a buy. It is helpful in orienting you to the new 607 test format. If nothing else, it forces you to double check your wrong answers. Just don't count on it to be totally accurate and don't let it's flawed low test scores discourage you.

First of all have one thing clear, if you are not an expert in network, or already have a certification (like CNE or MCSE) don't buy only this book. This is a short book that only has sample test for you to feel confortable about the idea of taking the test. Also it is very good to find out where your weaknesses are. For example, I thought that I was clear on the OSI model, until I took the first test. I happens that I had data link and network layer mixed up at some level. So I went back to the other big book I bought (My main source of study, one that has about 800 pages) and read againt he OSI model. If I wouldn't have reviewed it, I would have probably fried out on the test. So all this BLA, BLA, BLA is let you know that you need a BIG BOOK (One that covers all the Network+ Objectives fully) and when you finish reading it, you get this book, sit down and try to answer all the question. When you make a mistake try to find out what went wrong, or what you didn't understand. Please slow down when reading, some questions can be tricky when not fully understood. Hope you pass the test.

Networking Lab Practice Kit Review

Networking Lab Practice Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book is OK - concise, with good illustrations. It's a detailed study guide rather than the simple lab manual I expected. The complete book is recorded on the CD and set up for web-style browsing. You can search for specific text or click on technical terms to get on-line definitions. Practice tests are also included.
The "interactive real-time virtual simulations" are the disappointing feature. They work like this:
You are presented with a picture of a server desktop and a message at the bottom of the screen tells you where to click. Following the instructions, first you click on the Start Button. Then you click on Programs. Then you click on Administrative Tools. Then you click on a certain utility. Then you click on a menu. Then you click on a tab. Then you click on a button. Congratulations! You are done.
What what happens if you open the wrong utility? You can't. Click in the wrong place? You can't. Want to repeat the exercise without being told where to click? You can't.
These are not exercises that let you apply concepts or learn real-world skills. I realize that any simulation program has limits, but the software in this kit is not something thrown in for free. It is billed as an integral part of the kit. In the introduction the author states, "Your learning experience will be as if you were sitting in front of a server, or directly connected to the console of a Cisco router." Actually, nothing could be farther from the truth.

This book introduces the TCP/IP_savvy reader to the design and implementation of Internet protocols useful for maintaining network connections while moving from place to place. It describes the technology that makes mobile networking possible; in particular, it focuses on Mobile IP, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Standard for mobile networking. Written by Charles E. Perkins, a leader in the mobile networking field, this book discusses: * Mobile IP * Route optimization * IP version 6 * Use of Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) * EncapsulationAfter reading Mobile IP, a network engineer will be able to produce implementations of Mobile IP for mobile nodes, foreign agents, and home agents. As with any Internet protocol, mobile IP requires precise handling of packetized control data; all of the needed steps for that handling are detailed fully in this book. The necessary control mechanisms for processing advertisements (perhaps received over wireless media) are given first, followed by the main part of the Mobile IP protocol, which addresses how the mobile node registers its current IP attachment information with the support infrastructure on its home network. This book also details how Mobile IP specifies the handling of data packets destined for the mobile node.In addition to the base protocol, this book also presents newly specified enhancements to Mobile IP, and details the protocol support needed for enabling mobile networks using IPv6, the new version of IP with 128-bit addresses. Interactions between Mobile IP and other protocols (such as DHCP) are described, enabling network engineers to get a complete understanding of the system effects of deploying Mobile IP in enterprise networks. Other current trends in protocol development relevant to Mobile IP are also described, such as ways to reduce registration traffic with the home network, and first steps towards integrating Mobile IP with enterprise security installations such as firewalls and border routers.0201634694B04062001
