This is a very fine book. It explains the concepts very clearly and maybe used for signals too, when studying fourier and laplace transforms. The authors do a superb job and make challenging concepts sound easy for the student. Extremely organized and well prepared book.

CompTIA Security+ Deluxe Study Guide: Exam SY0-301 Review

CompTIA Security+ Deluxe Study Guide: Exam SY0-301

Curious as to what the differences are between the standard edition of the study guide (which sells for much less) and the "Deluxe" edition, it turns out the most significant difference is in the media. For some reason, the publisher isn't going out of their way to make it readily apparent, but the Deluxe/hardbound edition has a CD which includes a slew of items not in the standard edition. Among them: almost an hour of video on security topics, a "simulation engine" that lets you test your knowledge with something other than multiple choice, more bonus tests and a whole lot of PDFs - lab exercises, cabling info, etc. There is so much value in the CD alone, that it would be nice to see it packaged and sold separate or at least advertised as being the differentiator between the two books.

I have checked this book out of the Seattle Public Library so many times that I'm considering buying it for my personal reference library. I have recommended this book to many men and women. Excellent information (and things you did not expect to read) about differernt methods of birth control. If you want to be informed and educated about oral contraceptives, abortion and gynecology then you will find this book helpful.

CISSP: Certified Information Systems Security Professional Study Guide Review

CISSP: Certified Information Systems Security Professional Study Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I must admit a soft spot for Sybex (and Ed Tittel) study guides, having used them extensively for Microsoft exams. This book follows in that tradition, providing a good balance between detailed explanation and comprehensive coverage of the exam topics.
The bundled CD is useful. I raced through the 250 flash cards in an hour, which is good for jogging the memory. The four bonus exams, of 75 questions each, are good, but are not as difficult as the real thing. These exams provide grades broken down by each CISSP exam domain, which is excellent for identifying topics for revision.
One book can not guarantee coverage of all CISSP exam topics, particularly given the long list of references on the CISSP suggested reading list. I also skimmed through a friend's copy of Shon Harris's "All-in-One" exam guide. I would still rate this book higher, but Harris's book covers some topics in more detail then the Sybex book. The "All-in-One" practice exams are more difficult, though some of the questions are not clearly worded.
The biggest disappoint I have with the exam preparation experience is with the CISSP's ten domains. The examination questions are based on 'good exam fodder' from topics in the ten domains. The topics lean towards an academic approach to security, rather then knowledge needed by a working security professional.
The other references I would strongly suggest to help to gain a security brain, as well as a high exam score include: Stephen Northcutt's `Inside Network Perimeter Security', Ross Anderson's `Security Engineering', and Syngress's `Special Ops'. Maybe I should take one of the SANS security exams, which are much more practical in nature.
And best of luck with the exam!

Cryptography : Theory and Practice Review

Cryptography : Theory and Practice
Average Reviews:

As other people have pointed out, this is not a mathematics book, and it is not an algorithm (recipies) book. It could be a great book for people that are interested in learning these tools to actually use them, either in a research or product development context (something besides homework). Unfortunately, the number of typos, in key mathematical expressions AND PORTIONS OF THE EXPLANATIONS is staggering. Go to the author's web page and you will find that some chapters, like 4 for example, average more than one typo per page (and some of these 'typos' are full sentences, or math expressions that do not look like anything that is actually printed on the page). If you do not have that errata sheet handy, you will waste a lot of time trying to understand the text, or trying to solve the exercises. If you are trying to learn from this book, without attending a class and without the errata, you will simply give up. It is a real shame because it has all the makings of a great book.

E-Commerce Security: Weak Links, Best Defenses Review

E-Commerce Security: Weak Links, Best Defenses
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The title is ever so slightly misleading in that the topic is not electronic commerce as a whole, but the (admittedly most popular) Web segment of it. However, within this limit, the book does provide solid coverage and good advice for a whole range of issues.
Chapter one is a general introduction to the factors involved, looking at some recent "attacks" of various types, and then reviewing the client, transport, server, and operating system components to be examined in the remainder of the book. Client (generally browser) flaws are covered thoroughly in chapter two. The breadth of coverage even includes mention of topics such as the concern for privacy considerations with cookies. Active content is the major concern, with an excellent discussion of ActiveX (entitled "ActiveX [In]security"), a reasonably detailed review of the Java security model, and a look at JavaScript. Unfortunately, very little of this touches directly on e-commerce as such, except insofar as insecure client technology is going to make e-commerce a harder sell to the general public. While covering the transport of transaction information, in chapter three, Ghosh makes an interesting distinction between stored account systems (where you want to secure the transmission of identification data) and stored value systems (where the data, once transmitted, is useless to an eavesdropper). Many books concentrate on either channel security or electronic cash systems, so this comparison is instructive.
A server involves multiple programs, and may involve multiple machines. Server security can quickly become complex, and this is quite evident in chapter four. While a great deal of useful and thought-provoking information is presented, the complicated nature of the undertaking works against this chapter. Not all topics are dealt with thoroughly, or as well as the previous material was. Oddly, one issue not covered in depth is the firewall, which is handled very well in chapter five, with operating system problems. Ghosh sets up a classification scheme for OS attacks, illustrated by specific weaknesses in Windows NT and UNIX.
The book ends in chapter six with a call for certification of software, greater attention to security in all forms of software, and, interestingly, for greater use of component software. (From the jacket material, it appears that Ghosh is currently involved in the promotion of component software systems.)
Each chapter ends with a set of references. Unlike all too many books with bibliographies stuff with obscure citations from esoteric journals, the bulk of the material listed is available on the Internet. A separate section lists Web sites used in the text.
The various issues dealt with in the book are explained clearly, and generally present counsel on the best practices for secure online commerce. A compact but comprehensive guide to the current state of electronic transaction security.

CCIE Routing and Switching Flash Cards and Exam Practice Pack (CCIE Self-Study) (Flash Cards and Exam Practice Packs) Review

CCIE Routing and Switching Flash Cards and Exam Practice Pack (CCIE Self-Study) (Flash Cards and Exam Practice Packs)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
CCIE Routing and Switching Flash Cards
Reviewer: Glenn Bradley, Senior Network Engineer
Reviewer Certification: CCDA, CCNA, CCNP, ISSP
Rating: 4 out of 5
This text and flash card format is a great "last 30 days before the test" tool. If you've been preparing for your written or have plans to, remember this book. I chose a method that may work for some and not for others.
I took the four exam method to achieve my CCNP. I did this because it was more important to me to have an in depth understanding of the four primary disciplines than it was to get through the process quickly. I didn't want any gaps in my knowledge base as I prepared for the CCIE written.
I came straight off the CCNP completion and went into a 90 day high intensity self study program that basically occupied all my free time. I passed with (a little) room to spare but would have loved to have this book for my last 30 days of prep time.
Be sure to understand that this book is a study aid. It will in no way prepare you for the exam in and of itself. However, used in conjunction with a solid, well rounded study plan, it will increase your chances of success substantially.
The limited text preceding each chapter and the more in depth discussions of specific technologies that follow each chapter are well written and right to the point. I did not feel that I was reading a lot of fluff that some authors use to make it appear that there is greater value in the material being presented.
I give the book 4 out of 5. As mentioned earlier; the audience would include those just completing their CCNP and planning to go directly for the CCIE written in order to hang onto the more elusive details that we all learn just before an exam. Some folks may be planning to take the written directly as they are already functioning at the CCNP level. This text will help fill in the blanks they may have by not having the benefit of preparing for and taking the CCNP tests.

Principles of Information Security Review

Principles of Information Security
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book does provide a broad overview of the concepts of information security. Whatever good information this book does provide is, to some extent, offset by three problems: First, the book is filled with many, many typographical errors. While reading the book, I constantly found myself going back and trying to determine what the writer meant by many of the mangled sentences (or pieces of sentences) in the book. Second, there are a few errors in information. Finally, there are areas where important explanations or details about concepts are completely omitted. The writers needed to do some additional work and editing to make the book's portrayal of many of the concepts it covers clearer and more comprehensive.
There are plenty of free online resources (NIST's Computer Security Resource Center, for example) that would be better places to learn about information security than this text.

The fourth edition of Principles of Information Security explores the field of information security and assurance with updated content including new innovations in technology and methodologies. Readers will revel in the comprehensive coverage that includes a historical overview of information security, discussions on risk management and security technology, current certification information, and more. The text builds on internationally recognized standards and bodies of knowledge to provide the knowledge and skills students need for their future roles as business decision-makers. Information security in the modern organization is a management issue which technology alone cannot answer; it is a problem that has important economic consequences for which management will be held accountable. Readers can feel confident that they are using a standards-based, content-driven resource to prepare for their work in the field.

Mastering BEA WebLogic Server: Best Practices for Building and Deploying J2EE Applications Review

Mastering BEA WebLogic Server: Best Practices for Building and Deploying J2EE Applications
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I really like this book. It is not for beginners, and is not an "Intro to J2EE". However, for advanced developers, and especially those leaning towards the administation aspects of WebLogic Server, this book is an excellent resource.
The examples in this book are straighforward, and the accompianing discussion is well written and easy to follow.
A lot of discussions in this book cover advanced topics leaning towards deployment and administration (such as tuning JVMs, or understanding Thread usage), but there are some excellent discussions regarding architecture as well. There is not a lot of material discussing developing J2EE code.
This book should be a part of any advanced J2EE developers library, especially those using WebLogic (since so many of the examples are targeted towards that platform).

Junos High Availability: Best Practices for High Network Uptime (Animal Guide) Review

Junos High Availability: Best Practices for High Network Uptime (Animal Guide)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Building a network capable of providing connectivity for simple business applications is a fairly straightforward and well-understood process. However, building networks capable of surviving varying degrees of failure and providing connectivity for mission-critical applications is a completely different story. After all, what separates a good network from a great network is how well it can withstand failures and how rapidly it can respond to them.
While there are a great deal of books and resources available to assist the network designer in establishing simple network connectivity, there aren't many books which discuss the protocols, technologies, and the myriad ways in which high availability can be achieved, much less tie it all together into one consistent thread. "JUNOS High Availability" does just that, in essence providing a single, concise resource covering all of the bits and pieces which are required in highly available networks, allowing the network designer to build networks capable of sustaining five, six, or even seven nines of uptime.
In general, there are a lot of misconceptions and misunderstandings amongst Network Engineers with regards to implementing high availability in Junos. One only needs to look at the fact that Graceful Restart (GR) protocol extensions and Graceful Routing Engine Switchover (GRES) are often mistaken for the same thing, thanks in no small part to the fact that these two technologies share similar letters in their acronyms. This book does a good job of clarifying the difference between the two and steers clear of the pitfalls typically prevalent in coverage of the subject matter. The chapter on `Control Plane High Availability' covers the technical underpinnings of the underlying architecture on most Juniper platforms; coverage of topics like the separation between the control and forwarding planes, and kernel replication between the Master and Backup Routing Engine give the reader a solid foundation to understand concepts like Non-Stop Routing, Non-Stop Bridging, and In-Service Software Upgrades (ISSU). In particular I found this book to be very useful on several consulting engagements in which seamless high availability was required during software upgrades as the chapter on `Painless Software Upgrades' discusses the methodology for achieving ISSU and provides a checklist of things to be performed before, during, and after the upgrade process. Similarly, I found the chapter on 'Fast High Availability Protocols' to be very informative as well, providing excellent coverage of BFD, as well as the differences between Fast Reroute vs. Link and Node Protection.
Overall I feel this book is a valuable addition to any networking library and I reference it often when I need to implement certain high availability mechanisms, or simply to evaluate the applicability of a given mechanism versus another for a certain deployment. The inclusion of factoring costs into a high availability design is a welcome addition and one that all too many authors fail to cover. Naturally, it only makes sense that costs should be factored into the equation, even when high availability is the desired end-state, in order to ensure that ultimately the business is profitable. If I had to make one suggestion for this book it is that there should be additional coverage of implementing High Availability on the SRX Series Services Gateways using JSRP, as this is a fundamental high availability component within Juniper's line of security products. To the authors credit however, this book was written just as the SRX line was being released, so I don't fault the authors for providing limited coverage. Perhaps more substantial coverage could be provided in the future if a Second Edition is published.
The bottom line is this - if you are a Network Engineer or Architect responsible for the continuous operation or design of mission-critical networks, "JUNOS High Availability" will undoubtedly serve as an invaluable resource. In my opinion, the chapters on `Control Plane High Availability', `Painless Software Upgrades', and `Fast High Availability Protocols' are alone worth the entire purchase price of the book. The fact that you get a wealth of information beyond that in addition to the configuration examples provided makes this book a compelling addition to any networking library.

IPv6 in Practice: A Unixer's Guide to the Next Generation Internet Review

IPv6 in Practice: A Unixer's Guide to the Next Generation Internet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Eventually we are all going to have to migrate on the Internet from IPv4 to IPv6. To be sure, this has taken longer than expected. But the sheer exhaustion of IPv4 addresses is bound to happen, and is a fundamental driver of the transition. So if you are a network programmer wondering about career trends, Stockebrand's book can be a useful consult.
He presupposes that you're already familiar with how IPv4 operates. You are then shown how IPv6 is much more powerful. Not just with the effectively infinite address space. But with how other drawbacks of IPv4 were addressed by the v6 designers. One of which is how v4 has no intrinsic Quality of Service. Current attempts to impose a QoS over v4 are crude and rather ad hoc. Whereas v6 has this built in as one of its fundamental properties.
Another v6 innovation is for Mobile IP, ie. nomadic computing. For this to be efficiently implemented, v4 falls short. But v6 gives a far simpler implementation. Thus Mobile IP may end up being one of the factors pushing for v6.

This book is a practical guide to IPv6 addressing Unix and network administrators with experience in TCP/IP(v4) but not necessarily any IPv6 knowledge. It focuses on reliable and efficient operation of IPv6 implementations available today rather than on protocol specifications. Consequently, it covers the essential concepts, using instructive and thoroughly tested examples, on how to configure, administrate, and debug IPv6 setups. These foundations are complemented by discussions of best practices and strategic considerations aimed at overall efficiency, reliability, maintainability, and interoperation.

CCNA Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide, (640-802): Exam 640-802
Average Reviews:

After trying to prepare for the CCNA on my own I came to the conclusion that I needed a book if I were going to understand the material enough to receive my CCNA. Having seen Wendells books score high ratings I was going to purchase one of his until I read some of the excerpts from his book. With all due respect to Wendell his books were simply too dry for me. Then I checked out Lammle and discovered his books read as if somebody is actually talking to you, as if you're in a conversation with someone. Having purchased this book it's as immersive as reading a good story and you're learning the whole time.
Todd Lammle fully understands what Cisco expects you to know for your CCNA exam and the seller point for me is the fact that Lammle actually has a gift for teaching it. His book doesn't read as if hes just reguritating information to you but instead he writes to actually make sure you're understanding the material. (I've had professors in college teaching CCNA classes that couldn't do this. And for the record, this book is leaps and bounds better than any college class I've had on Cisco related information). Even if at some point he comes out of nowhere with new material he'll warn you about it and then he'll cover it later in depth. I have never at any point felt overwhelmed with the information in the book and he starts with the fundamentals, the building blocks of networking and goes in depth from there.
At the end of every chapter he'll have exam essays, written labs, and review questions to really make sure you understand the material (along with the CD provided). And to prove Todd wants you to know the material he even has a website you can go to and ask him questions on topics you don't fully understand, or if you feel he might be wrong about something in his book you can talk to him about it. If fact, if you check out other Lammle books on Amazon, you can see he comments on reviews left by others. That to me shows someone who's really dedicated to teaching the material and is someone I have a lot of respect for these days.
I absolutely recommend this study guide. You'll learn so much.
