Besides everything being on one screen it seems not much has changed since 2004 version, which we where forced to upgrade out of if we wanted to keep using payroll.
One major problem is we have 2 companies and now- with the new edition -our server has to have Quickbooks open for multiple users to access the file (which also takes one of the licenses). If 2 users want to work in the other file they cannot.
Trying to talk with a Quickbooks represenative about this issue is like hitting your head against the wall, although they are nice. One will have you install it one way and the other the next way and neither way gets you to a better solution.
Anyway, overall Quickbooks is a good value for the money if this is your first software package, but I don't think it is worth an upgrade even from QB 2004 .

NETGEAR VPN05L ProSafe VPN Client Software 5-User Licenses Review

(More customer reviews)I used to be a big proponent of Netgear. Not anymore. First off, after reading the package on the VPN box, I believed the software client was included, but no. Once I figured that out, I bought the software, which costs more than the router. After a week of hacking, I finally got the software to work, on one out of 4 machines. One machine hard re-boots if you try any kind of network activity once the VPN is connected. I've disabled everything I can think of, it just won't work. It won't work with Vista either, no word from Netgear on a date. All other VPN software has to be un-installed, so forget using one machine to connect to a Netgear, Watchguard, Cisco, etc. vpn.
Very frustrating software.

You have to put your own biases aside to tell the story as it was. At the same time, you need to make readers understand the importance of how the company handled the challenges inherent to its evolution.
It takes the right combination of mind and skills to pull this kind of thing off. And that's exactly what authors Anthony F. Smith and Keith Hollihan manage to do in "ESPN: The Company."
"ESPN: The Company" pulls you into life at ESPN through vivid character and company descriptions. You learn by vicariously participating.
That's what consultant Anthony F. Smith did during his 20+-year tenure with ESPN, though he experienced the company firsthand. He joined with McKinsey just as ESPN was gaining traction as a startup. He stayed all the way through to its current incarnation as a $30 billion sports media giant.
In those years, he grew intimate with the people, culture, and strategy of ESPN. He and cowriter Keith Hollihan chronicle the highlights of those years: The prominent personalities within the company, the victories and losses, and the lessons learned.

In another, especially strong chapter, he describes how each of the company's leaders contributed to the right growth at the right time. He also breaks down how ESPN harnessed its employees' and fans' passion to gain business wins.
These are lesson every business should learn.
"ESPN: The Company" rewards readers with company intimacy and wisdom. The authors incorporate tidbits from a variety of sources to add nuance to the story. These include quotes, anecdotes, cable TV industry history, anthropology, and organizational science.
This richness helps you feel like you're participating in ESPN's story. You come out of each chapter having learned through your reading experience. The authors recap lessons in a short summation at the end of each chapter. The book's tone, while deeply respectful of ESPN, doesn't make bones about the contentious aspects of the company's growth.
Conclusion: The book's a winner.
A book is a success when it makes you respect a company you formerly knew little about. It is a success when you feel like you've experienced, rather than read, the story within. Ditto if it makes you want to read more of the authors' work.
ESPN: The Company did all three for me. I highly recommend it.

As an educator, I truly appreciated their organization and understanding of the importance of not skipping any steps lest you create a situation you'll regret later. The exercises and self-assessments were wonderful measurement tools, and truly helped me see my value outside of the classroom.
I now have a bustling home-based business that fits my life. I am editing children's books, writing educational articles, and doing online tutoring. I never realized these things were possible until I read this book.
Thank you for the invaluable role you've played in helping me create my own euphoria!

Virtual Teams: People Working Across Boundaries with Technology Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this book because I was intrigued. In much of the work I do I am a member of "virtual" teams. That is, I often am some distance apart from the people I am working with.
I found the book to be a slow read, with nuggets of information separated by deserts of fluff. The first half of the book is filled with vague ramblings about how the information age has changed the way that teams work and with case studies that illustrate how the forming of virtual teams has helped various companies solve difficult problems.
In the second half, the book begins to pick up. In a chapter entitled "Teaming with People" the authors discuss team dynamics, including essential roles with a team, how teams form and which aspects of team dynamics are especially subject to the stresses of distance communication.
The authors suggest that the beginning and closing phases of most projects are the most stressful on team members and that extra effort be exerted at the beginning phase of the project to bring the core project team members together, even if they are geographically separated. This, say the authors, will help build interpersonal relationships that can hold the team together in times of stress.
There are several optimum team sizes. 3 to 5 is the size of a core team, 5 to 25 the size of a "team family" and 25 to 200 the size of a "team camp". In the authors' opinion, any team larger than 5 people will naturally divide into sub-teams.
The authors also point out the value of rewarding teams. Making teams compete, or making them completely independent of one another has little value for the company. Cooperative goals can encourage and motivate all of the teams, while competition can demoralize them.
Finally, the authors talk about starting up teams and provide a checklist of some elements such as a customer and a management sponsor which are essential to any team's success.
Overall, I found the book to have some good information on forming and maintaining teams, and what to do when those teams are not located in the same physical location. There is some fluff, I feel, and the book could easily be half its current length without sacrificing much.

The Adaptive Enterprise: IT Infrastructure Strategies to Manage Change and Enable Growth (IT Best Practices) Review

(More customer reviews)The infrastructure management approach that the authors give in this book incorporates practices from systems (and software) engineering, and is a blueprint for success. The objectives are: (1) end-to-end management with no gaps in ownership, (2)cost efficiencies through reuse and component-based strategies, (3)holistic view that looks at business, operational and technology (instead of the common 'technology only' view), and adaptability (an infrastructure that is managed to long range goals, but can be quickly adapted to emerging and immediate business needs).
How the authors meet these objectives is by identifying physical, functional and interface components that make up the infrastructure and integrating them into a service-oriented framework. This is consistent with component-based software engineering, and it is a remarkably good fit to infrastructure management. Moreover, the authors introduce patterns, also borrowed from software and systems engineering disciplines, to map business requirements to design in an efficient manner that promotes reuse. Another advantage of patterns is this approach captures knowledge (something not directly pointed out in the book). If you're not familiar with process patterns the book I recommend for infrastructure professionals is More Process Patterns by Scott Ambler. This is the second of a two book set and it directly addresses patterns that are related to infrastructure (the first book, Process Patterns, is more focused on software engineering).
The two chapters I liked the most are 4, Developing Adaptive Services, and 5, Services Starter Kit. These chapters tie services to infrastructure and go into fine detail about how to integrate services and the underlying technology. I especially like the way the authors use multiple life cycle management for each layer in the infrastructure. Chapters 6 (Processes and Methods) and 7 (Packaging and People) neatly pull together the preceding chapters into a coherent, process-oriented strategy. The single appendix is also valuable because it gives a comprehensive component catalog. This catalog can be used as the basis of the infrastructure blueprint as well as the foundation of an encompassing asset management initiative.

Nine Shift Review

(More customer reviews)This is a "future shock" book explained with such clarity that no one can leave the book without some awareness of their own experience with change. I heard the author speak at a lecture two days ago. If you get a chance to hear him in person, I urge you to do so. The book begins with the turn of the 20th century and a small town in Kansas with four department stores and an opera house. It describes the trends that caused this very small town to have these amenities. It then goes to the turn of this century and shows parallel rapid changes in our own society and the impacts these are having on our work and personal lives. I found the most interesting parallel was the comparison of the death of the horse and buggy in favor of cars to the death of cars in favor of TRAINS! (And not for the reason you think!!) This is an easy to read and understand book. It is a book you will not be able to put down. Short chapters allow you to read in spurts. Pictures and quotes add to the interesting tale of the turns of centuries.

(More customer reviews)Ignoring all the other bad reviews, I bought this book because it was the only one out there about doing accounting on the Internet. First of all, the content isn't at all what I had expected. Second, the book is full of chapters on stuff that doesn't make any sense. I mean, come on, a chapter on what the Internet is??? Aren't we a little past that? Third, the writing is difficult to follow and what little I did read through just left me confused.
I flipped through the whole book searching for SOMETHING useful and maybe found 5 pages total with info I might be able to use. Needless to say, I returned this book. Oh, and the fact that it costs like $33 is ridiculously expensive and absolutely NOT worth it for what you get...I wouldn't pay $2 for it!

Medical Billing Networks and Processes - Profitable and Compliant Revenue Cycle Management in the Internet Age Review

(More customer reviews)Medical Billing is one of those niche targeted books that demonstrates the benefit of place like Amazon.com. This is the kind of book that you would NEVER find if not for the Internet. This book is a veritable cornucopia of information and advice on how a medical practice needs to structure itself to ensure viable billing practices. This is valuable to not only the physician but also to the patient.
The author suggests that although the managed care billing system may appear to be broken, with the right disciplines we can FIX IT ourselves in many cases. In my work with medical practices and hospitals I can't tell you how often I come across physicians that have no choice but to reduce certain patient services because they just don't have the income to invest it where they would like. In the same way I have seen improper billing procedures frustrate patients so much that they literally REDUCE the number of doctor visits just to avoid the hassle of dealing with insurance and billing companies.
What I particularly liked about Yuval's book is that it can be easily understood by medical professionals, billing and insurance company representatives but also by the common person. He starts with a clear, thorough explanation of the history of the medical billing system, the advent of managed care and then gets into the nuts and bolts of billing explaining in a very down-to-earth manner, Super bills, allowable, write-offs, charge-backs, how the clearing houses work and so on. The book is loaded with graphs, captions, bullet points and images that just aid in the understanding of what can often a rather confusing topic.
Throughout the book, the author makes reference to how the system needs to change and what new variables may be on the horizon. I found this to be helpful in guiding my medical clients toward some policies and procedures that we may want to put in place regarding the new ICD codes and CPT10 system, the new FTC Red Tag privacy issues, and new HIPA regulations. The book makes a great reference tool for planning as well.
As a consultant that spends time consulting with hospital administrators, practice managers and physicians I have to say this is probably THE MOST comprehensive, easy to understand manual on medical billing that I have ever seen. I have actually purchased several copies to give to some of my clients and I suggest other medical consultants do the same.
I STRONGLY recommend this book to all medical professionals, practice managers and medical consultants. That said, if you are a patient and really want to understand the medical billing process I will say this is the ONLY book for you.

(More customer reviews)There are many resources to help understand official ways of doing things in Russia, this book helps the reader understand how those many things actually get done.
Alena Ledeneva's discussion of the many types of informal business, political and legal practices is eye-opening for those readers used to the Western rule of law and doing business. She effectively examines many aspects of Russian life including political campaining, bartering, and the business practice of double-accounting.
She opens her chapter on Financial scheming with a post-soviet saying "if a company has a profit, it has a bad accountant". This sums up how many Russian businesses operate and the reader should keep this in mind when establishing joint partnerships and joint ventures.
This is the best book I've read for the business person, diplomat or graduate student who plans on working with Russians in Russia.
