Mike Meyers' A+ Certification Passport, Third Edition (Mike Meyers' Certficiation Passport) Review

Mike Meyers' A+ Certification Passport, Third Edition (Mike Meyers' Certficiation Passport)
Average Reviews:

I am MCSE, A+, and CCNA certified and used this book as part of my preparation for the CompTia A+ exams.
This book presents a decent overview of the CompTia A+ exam objectives, but lacks sufficient detail to actually pass the test without supplementing the material. I have provided 2 recommendations at the bottom of this review.
The book covers both areas of the exam (hardware and OS), and provides a CD with tice tests. I noticed the review questions at the end of each chapter lacked worthwhile explanations, which necessitated searching through the text to figure out why you may have missed a particular question.
This book overall presents a decent, but minimal, overview of both the hardware and operating system exams and should be used in conjunction with Mueller's "Upgrading and Repairing PCs" classic (ISBN: 0789727455), and Exam Cram's book (ISBN: 078983043x).

CompTIA A+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide, Sixth Edition Review

CompTIA A+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide, Sixth Edition

I spent over a week agonizing over which book to purchase to prepare for the A+ exam. I ended up choosing this because it seemed to me to be the most material for the money and because Meyers, the author, has a reputation for quality in the industry. After working through the book, I am fully satisfied, and passed the exam on the first try. This guide is extremely comprehensive, and laid out in a very logical and easy-to-use way. Meyers' writing style is very easy to read and engaging. Even dry subjects are quite readable. The included materials are also quite good, but I should mention a few caveats. The book advertises 8 practice exams, but that means two for each of the four tests. Because any one person will only take two tests (Essentials and one elective), there really are only four practice tests (however, there is so much overlap, I found taking all the tests to be helpful). Also, each practice test is only 50 questions, but the real test is 100, so each is only half a test. On the other hand, the practice tests are very accurate and the interface is just like what you'll face on test day. Also, if you purchase your exam vouchers from Meyers' website, you will not only save $30 on each test, but also get an additional two practice tests (100 questions) for each exam. Overall, I definitely recommend this book over any other you might be considering, and I plan to purchase the accompanying Network+ book to study for that test.

E-Learning in the 21st Century: A Framework for Research and Practice Review

E-Learning in the 21st Century: A Framework for Research and Practice
Average Reviews:

Perhaps it is not surprising that the authors of a book on e-learning are Canadian. Canada, like Australia, has had perennial problems with educating a population spread over vast distances. It is natural that Canada would have an intense interest in a means of providing remote higher education.
The authors argue that e-learning is not some mirage of the dot com boom. In this book, they explain that it can be a fundamentally disruptive technology. That if correctly implemented, it can empower a more economic and effective teaching of specialised material, irrespective of the actual subject of the material.
The application of e-learning to higher education is seen as better than for general primary or secondary education. There, the material is much the same across a nation, and traditional teaching methods are adequate. But for tertiary education, across an entire nation, there might be only limited demand for certain subjects, making it inefficient for every university to offer those.
They don't claim that there are exclusive pedagogies to be used in e-learning. Rather, that it lends itself to varied approaches, several of which can be effective.

The second edition of E-Learning in the 21st Century provides a coherent, comprehensive, and empirically-based framework for understanding e-learning in higher education. Garrison draws on his decades of experience and extensive research in the field to explore the technological, pedagogical, and organizational implications of e-learning. Most importantly, he provides practical models that educators can use to realize the full potential of e-learning. This book is unique in that it focuses less on the long list ever-evolving technologies and more on the search for an understanding of these technologies from an educational perspective. The second edition has been fully revised and updated throughout and includes discussions of social media and mobile learning applications as well as other emerging technologies in today's classrooms. This book is an invaluable resource for courses on e-learning in higher education as well as for researchers, practitioners and senior administrators looking for guidance on how to successfully adopt e-learning in their institutions.
