(More customer reviews)First, let me be specific, I am reviewing Paperport 11, not Paperport Pro. Why do I think Paperport 11 is a scam? Because it's like a demo version of Paperport Pro (which is the full product). The use of this non-pro version is super limited.
Problems:
1) I can't create a new scanner profiles (I am limited to the 4 they supplied initially) for scanning.
2) They claim to support most scanners, but unless yours is a popular scanner, it's treated just as a generic plain paperport scanner. Nothing special.
3) I bought the product hoping it can create searchable PDF files so I can use my desktop search engine (like google desktop) to search my scanned documents. No such thing! To do it, you have to: a) buy Paperport 11 Pro, b) buy OmniPage (I presume). Which totals more than 300 bucks!!!
4) Very very limited customer support. You have ONE free technical support call (which I used up during installation because the installer crashed my system). After that, it's 20 bucks per phone call. There is no free email support. The first and every message you send them will cost 10 bucks each. What a scam: crash the user's computer upon installation, force them to call you so they burn up their "free" support. After that, any questions you have will cost you $$$!
I so want to return this product, but I already mailed in the UPC code for the rebate so I cannot return the product anymore. Another trap!!! Unbelievable!!!
Final words: STAY AWAY!!! I will never buy anything from Nuance, EVER!

Sims 3 Pack: Apartment Life + Pet Stories + Nightlife Review

While Apartment Life and Nightlife are both excellent expansion packs for The Sims 2, The Sims 2 Pet Stories is NOT COMPATIBLE.
Pet Stories is a standalone game, and does not expand on The Sims 2. I think they probably meant to put The Sims 2 Pets Expansion Pack in this bundle, which would work perfectly.
Oddly, it's a perfect example of how Electronic Arts made The Sims 2 titles very confusing to users: They can't even put a bundle together without making a glaring mistake such as this.

Vista is a solid product. It was not as solid the day it was released, but what is? It's now only been a few months and the updates that apply the moment you install or upgrade to Vista provide you with a smooth experience.
Is the interface different? Oh yea. Is it bad? Is it slow? No. It's fine. Vista runs only SLIGHTLY slower on an older PC with a Pentium III chip or older but why wouldn't you expect that? You can't get more features AND more power and expect a faster machine when your hardware is getting along in the years.
In addition, if you simply don't understand the nature of Vista, then you haven't yet read Greg Perry's "Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows Vista All in One" (Amazon Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows Vista All in One (Sams Teach Yourself)) and frankly, this is hands-down the best way for a newcomer - even if you are or are not comfortable with XP - to master EVERYthing you REALLY need to know about Vista.
Software is not always obvious. That does not mean it's bad or difficult to use or requires a huge learning curve. Once you get Vista, beg or borrow or buy "Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows Vista All in One" and you will be ready to become a MASTER at the product. I went through what YOU are going through and I know most Vista books and sites DO NOT give you what you need to make this product work well FOR YOU. This book does and I've read all the top-selling Vista books.
Now I don't care if you get "Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows Vista All in One" or not, although you should, but you need to stop listening to the hype of those who have axes to grind with Microsoft. If you want to move FORWARD with your computer you need to have the juice needed which means a moderately recent PC and you need Vista.
The number one reason for getting Ultimate and not a lower Vista product is the BitLocker encryption technology and the ability to make a ghosted image of your disk drive that Vista can restore. If you've used Symantec's DriveImage or Ghost products then you know these alone can run you more than $50. It's thrown in with Vista Ultimate and you'll REALLY use these tools a lot.

I have used some form of "Symantec's Backup Exec System Recovery Server Edition" since the Windows 2003 days, when the interface was clean, simple, and easy to use. Since that time, Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery which used to be marketed by Veritas (until Symantec bought out the company), has evolved along with Windows, and today it is a robust, flexible, somewhat complicated enterprise-class application that is almost indispensable to a shop still utilizing hardware or a Data Center operation in transition to a virtualized environment.
But not every server/application lends itself to virtualization, so I predict there will be a need for the functionality Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery brings to the Data Center table for quite some time.
Product Description (From Symantec): Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 is a simple, cost-effective backup and recovery solution for small businesses that helps minimize downtime and avoid disaster by easily recovering individual data files/folders or complete Windows systems in minutes - not hours or days - even to different hardware, virtual environments, or remote locations.
"Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery's" forte has always been in keeping the backup & recovery process simple (well relatively simple) and easy to use, but flexible enough to adapt to almost any enterprise environment. Version 2010's release is no different. Key Features include:
oBackup systems automatically, while you work, through scheduled or event-driven backups;
oOffsite Backup Copy to an FTP location or secondary disk drive;
oDissimilar Hardware Recovery with Restore Anywhere Technology;
oSeamless physical to virtual (P2V) and virtual to physical (V2P) conversions for VMWare, Microsoft and Citrix virtual environments.
Installation
"Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Server Edition" can be installed one of two ways; either on the server you need to backed-up, or on a centralized server upon which the back-up agent can be pushed out to the servers needing to be backed-up. A centralized installation will further allow an administrator to centrally manage the backup events and scheduling for each server.
However, we choose the individual option (it was easier to administer) and installed "Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Server Edition" on each individual server (7 in all); thereafter I can log into each server and set the backup schedule for each.
Usage

"Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Server Edition" is like most backup software these days, wizard driven, asking as series of questions to help simplify the backup and recovery process. But, make no mistake "Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Server Edition" is a complicated software application with a lot of moving parts, so before using it for the first time one should read the owner's manual.
Brick-level back-up is pretty straight forward (depending on the amount of data being backed-up, it could take upwards to an hour to complete), but brick-level recovery can be time consuming and problematic especially if you are performing a Restore Anywhere procedure. Partition table may need to be deleted and recreated, hard disk partitions deleted and recreated, and or FAT tables rearranged. But if all goes well, I can perform a System Recovery in under an hour.
We use "Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Server Edition" to perform brick-level back-ups on (7) servers nightly to an off-site location connected by a generous data pipe so the process is seamless. After I installed the software on each server I ran the backup wizard, specifying what I needed backed-up, to where, and how frequently.
The "Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Server Edition" agent runs as a Windows service so an administrator does not have to be logged into the server in order for the process to run unattended. You can set the application to append the current backup set, or overwrite it to save space. Full or incremental back-ups can also be configured.
For recovery we store our sets on a network drive. No problem, "Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Server Edition" has a utility that allows for logging into a network and mapping a drive as long as the right credentials are used. But the application can also read back-up sets from locally attached (USB) hard drives and or DVD drives.
Conclusions
I have no (real) complaints concerning either the functionality or usage of "Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Server Edition"; it is an easy to use, robust brick-level backup & recovery program that offers a ready solution for just about every enterprise environment. There are of course other solutions on the market, but none that seems to offer the level of functionality and refinement our business is looking for.
Symantec technical support has always been there when we needed them, including weekend and evening, and the support techs have always been knowledgeable and willing to stick with me until whatever issue I was having was resolved to my satisfaction.

Trackmania United Review

(More customer reviews)I originally got into Trackmania by playing Trackmania Nations, the free version offered at the Trackmania website. After logging several hours on the game, I became a Trackmaniac. I recently purchased the full version (Trackmania United) and was again impressed. Both Nations and United are great racing games because they are very different from most: the racing involves intense tracks with lots of loops and jumps and obstacles on the track. You can compete against yourself to beat the gold medal time for the track, or you can take your gameplay online to challenge friends or anyone else for the best time on any track. Each track has a unique twist that makes it challenging: lots of hairpin turns, very long jumps, unanticipated holes in the track floor, loops, etc. In Nations (which comes with United if you don't already have it), you can drive a formula-one style race car in a Stadium type enviroment. In United, you can drive cars from a Ferrari-style race car for speed to Jeep-style for off-road. Environments in United range from Stadium to Island to Desert to Snow and others. United also offers different types of racing, such as Puzzle, Stunt, or traditional Race. Although the game's graphics are not anything breathtaking, they are still good. Overall, the game is very fun and can be played for many, many hours.
Here's a bit of advice, though: I bought this game for $10 shipped; sometimes a certain seller will sell the game at this killer deal, but when its out of stock, the game goes for the standard $40 or more. The game being sold for $10 is the same exact one as being sold for more, so if you don't see it for $10, try waiting it out to see if the price goes down. No promises though: you might have to pay more, but it'll still be worth it.

The Oracle of Changes Review

The Oracle of Changes CD is a refreshing take... and wondered why no one had done this sooner! I found the music soothing (perhaps a decent set of speakers is best for the full effect). I enjoyed the rendering of the 'cave of the oracle' I entered and the 'pool of reflection' I "sat" in front of to begin the reading. Realistic hands throw the coins for you 6 times and the lines appear on the screen. The artwork that accompanied each hexagram is full of imagery and purpose (longtime students of the I Ching may recognize the deeper meanings). The explanation of the hexagrams and line changes is given by a VERY soothing and clear female voice. Bonuses: The CD allows the user to save the answers in a journal for later reference. You can type in the number of any hexagram in stead of a question and get to that answer without a full reading. The CD also allows yarrow or coin toss odds; it's the user's choice. A great pick!

(More customer reviews)Virusscan 7 is big disappointment over the previous versions. The interface is clunkier, the background scanner often experiences a massive memory leak, which will eat up 700MB of Ram/Swap space before crashing, and it's a pain to get to the advanced options.
But my biggest problem was that if you EXPLICITELY opt to not install the firewall, Mcafee still puts a rudimentary filter in (just no GUI) that has a tenacious ability to hose your internet settings. Windows will complain that it is unable to create sockets, and as a result many server applications will not work (Apache, Telnet).

Clearly, they were not written by ESL students and they seem very professional and with a lot of info about the software (looks like written by the developers). Black Ice Defender Review

(More customer reviews)in the past I have used many different firewalls. The famous "Atguard", Zonealarm, and now Black ice. I spent [$] on it, it said that it stops hackers cold. I frequently visit a web site called "shields up", it tries to probe your ports and test your security. using Black Ice, it was sucsessful in probing port 139, and NETBios. (thats not good), and I found that I was not in full stealth mode. Using the free Zonealarm firewall, all of your ports are in full stealth mode, however recent rumors suggesting that zonealarm may actually be spyware convinced me to get rid of it. In addition to Black Ice, I downloaded a free firewall called "Tiny Personal Firewall", it is very good, and makes my ports invisible, just as zonealarm. Another problem I had after intstalling Black Ice, is that my PC would just turn off, and I would get kicked off the internet often, also, since I have had it, it hasnt picked up a single hacker, and I have it set on "paranoid" mode, however the Tiny Persoanl firewall, has picked up, and blocked a number of attemps made by hackers to get into my system. If I could do it again, I would have saved my [$]. Dont but Black Ice. Download "Tiny Persoanl Firewall"....its good, and it's free! :)

Internet Traffic Cop; Police Your Broadband Internet Connection Review

(More customer reviews)I bought the Internet Cop for an XP desktop connected to a fiber optic network. This is a great device, featuring two large "red light" "green light" buttons that let you take your whole system off the network with the simple press of a button (I used to manually unplug the network cable from the router when working on sensitive financial files to avoid malicious hackers).
The Internet Cop has really simplified my life. It's given me a trusted, physical firewall that's quick and easy to use. Push a button, off the network. Push a button, on the network. And it's very obvious is you're on (large green light) or off (large red light). Cool!
If you have to ask why you have to unplug from the network to avoid hackers, it's time to do a Google search and learn a little more about your computer's vulnerability while online even when protected by a firewall and/or virus programs----- OR you can just buy one of these and trust that you really, really need one if your computer is not already equipped with an off/on networking switch. Think PHYSICAL FIREWALL--hackers can't hit what they can't see.

Peachtree Complete Accounting 2002 Review

(More customer reviews)I have a financial services company that includes bookkeeping and have used Quickbooks and Peachtree extensively. For the smallest businesses either product will do the job. However, Peachtree has in my opinion a much stronger product for the price. I have switched several customers from QuickBooks to Peachtree but never the other way. I am not surprised the person had conflicts with his network installation. I did find a few bugs with the newest version of Peachtree(mainly related to G/L reporting) and will watch closely to see how quickly they have updates. In the past they have been really good with updates, however, with new ownership I do caution what kind of tech support and "customer first" service you will receive. The person that wrote that its competition is NOT Quickbooks is mostly right. It is the OTHER product in the price range and the "best marketed" and will do the job for most mom and pop operations(though after seeing what people do in QB that have no bookkeeping skills you could be better off with using a paper system, believe me) Quickbooks is poorly designed and set up in comparison. I consider QB a PRO version of Quicken in its design and use of "registers". Peachtree is much more powerful and offers alot more to people that want to expand there accounting system in the future. However, both programs slow down considerably over the network when your company size gets very large(Over 20 MB etc.). Another Caveat is Complete accounting is not compatible with the other 2002 versions. I have some clients that don't need the extra features and network compatibility BUT I set up there books on my Peachtree, backed it up and brought it to them to restore and WAS INCOMPATIBLE. Not sure if that effects anyone else but just a mention. Overall it is comparable to the features you find in products I've seen bought for $10,000+++. The only thing you really get for the extra thousands is the ability to handle more than 5 workstations and better database management. Also learning Crystal Reports can take some time but with it you can do anything with Peachtree as to reporting. By far best value in the price range.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 Medical Review

(More customer reviews)I am dictating using the preferred version of Dragon 9.0. I was curious as to whether the huge price difference between the preferred version and the medical version was warranted. Until recently, as a specialist surgeon, I have not found that the additional cost for the medical version would have been strictly necessary. However, I finally upgraded to the medical version after 3-4 months when I found it for a lower price. I recommend that you carefully consider whether you need to spend the extra 900 to $1000 for the medical version.
The medical version does improve your accuracy when you are dictating complex medical phrases and jargon, and the accuracy gain you get might be worth the large price premium. In addition, the medical version includes some network interoperability features, and support for more applications, although I did not find any unsupported programs while using the preferred version. I should say that I finally gave up on the preferred and went to the medical version when I found a copy from a large online retailer for 400 dollars.
The preferred version does quite well with standard medical words, and the few terms that it does not recognize one could quickly train. Unless you have very complex speech, use a lot of jargon, or have network or management needs that the preferred version will not allow, you may want to start with the preferred version. I got mine on a online bid-type site for about 70 dollars.
Potential buyers should be aware that despite extensive training, optimization, and custom word entry, users should expect a significant number of errors using Dragon NS 9 Medical. These errors cannot be eliminated by training, software optimization, high-quality microphones or speech input equipment, or fast computers.
Since I continue to use this program in my medical practice, I have developed a number of work-arounds to minimize the inconvenience and annoyance of transcription errors. First, the software has trained me (not the other way around, I'm afraid) to eliminate certain types of speech and certain words from my dictation vocabulary due to unacceptably high error rates. Second, I use a lot of macros, which are pre-written chunks of text, which naturally contain zero errors. These two things allow me to achieve an error rate that is acceptable, but still significant. Long story short, transcription errors remain a major source of annoyance with this software.
Finally, I am forced to close the program and restart the program each morning when I first began dictating. Whatever happens while the software microphone switch is off for several hours seems to somehow make the program hang. As a result, I lose a few precious moments each time I begin dictating every single working day. This is a major annoyance.

Overall, I still use Dragon, but instead of a fire-breathing speech recognition Dragon, it's more like an annoying mosquito. Nuance support still leaves a lot to be desired, the price of telephone support ($10 per call) is insulting, and bugs remain distressingly common. If there were something better, I'd buy it in a heatbeat, but sadly, Nuance is the only real choice at the moment.

Peachtree Complete Accounting 2005 Review

(More customer reviews)I am currently using Peachtree Premium accounting 2005 and would NEVER recommend that anyone use this software.
First, the software is full of bugs. For example, our accounts receivable aging is constantly becoming out of balance with our general ledger. This is clearly a system issue. Peachtree / Best Software has built an "integrity check" which is their system for fixing the database. I have been forced to run this integrity check, which takes approximately 2 hours to complete, 4 times this month. I check our A/R balance again today, and it is again out of balance. This will be the 5th time this month I've been forced to take my staff off line (no one can use the system while this integrity check is running), with no real resolution in sight.
I've just completed the integrity check and it found 88 database errors to correct. That is just in the past 5 days.
Second, the system is extremely slow over the network. Our internal network is very stable and rarely has issues with any other network activity. Peachtree is by far the slowest running program on our network.
Third, the system regularly freezes and crashes. When the program freezes or crashes, it requires the user to reboot. Often times, the user will be locked out of the system, because Peachtree thinks that there is still a user there. Eventually, the solution is to reboot the server where the network database resides. Again, this requires all users to stop using the system and to wait for the network system to come back up again.

(More customer reviews)This program was difficult to use, with a counter-intuitive user interface, complicated scheduling sequences, and at least on my computer - faulty software altogether. Constant error messages, inability to restore individual files successfully, and time/date stamps that were reading the year 2047, and no way to change that, etc...
I bought this instead of Acronis True Image, because I wanted to save the $15 bucks. I figured as a single-computer, "home" use, I didn't need a program with advanced features.
So. The question is, was the 15 bucks saved worth hours and hours of head-scratching, and months of lacking of true backup protection?
Finally, I bought Acronis True Image Home 10, and set it up and had it running to my needs in under an hour. It works, it's professional-grade. Imagine your HD crashes. Imagine how much time you might have to spend to get up and running again. Is that worth skimping 15 bucks?

(More customer reviews)Poker Academy V2 is a must buy! I have been playing poker all my life, but only recently have I focused on Texas Hold Em. Each time I play, I increase my skills, but I don't play often enough against quality opponents. When I came across Poker Academy V2, I was skeptical about how much it would help me learn the game. Well, let me tell you, I am significantly better than I was before.
Not only are the computer opponents better than any other poker game out there, but the program allows you to see every statistic possible about your cards, the pot odds, and how you bet overall. For example, I learned that I was very passive pre-flop but very aggressive post-flop. I also learned what happens when I call to see a flop with the various different card combos and how many outcomes are possible. The programmers, who have set up an extremely complex algorithm to run the game, give you access to all the components that make up that code so you can get a better idea of all the odds and percentages of everything that happens in a round of poker. When you watch on TV and you see people call "time," they are calculating in their head the pot odds, which includes how much they have invested in the pot compared to the total number of cards that will help them win or lose. Poker Academy V2 does this as well, so you can begin to pick up patterns with certain hands, which translates into better and smarter betting on a real table.
The best thing I can say about this Poker training tool (I think of it more as a tool than a game) is how well I have done at a real Texas Hold Em table. During my most recent trip, on a $3/6 Limit Table, I won over $280 in about 2 hours by using all the knowledge I have gained about how to play Texas Hold Em and about how I play my game. In other words, the more I know about my skills, the better I act at the table. For the price Amazon sells this product compared to how much I won on my last trip, I would say Poker Academy V2 is well worth it. Spend the money now, learn to play the game better (no matter what your experience level is), and go win at a real table.
