(More customer reviews)This version of Scrabble not only allows the expected muli-player games and games against the computer at various skill levels, but also allows games between computers on a local area network, as well as over the Internet. The built-in dictionary is good, although it's missing a some words (e.g., ki, kis, qi & qis) that are included in the Merriam-Webster Official Scrabble Players' Dictionary, 4th Edition. As near as I can tell, 166,184 of the 267,751 words recognized by SOWPODS (anagram of two acronyms: OSW (Official Scrabble Words) OSPD (Official Scrabble Players Dictionary) - the word list used in tournament Scrabble in most countries except the USA, Thailand and Canada) are in the Scrabble Complete Dictionary. Too bad, definitions are not included; so you should still have a dictionary handy. There is a custom dictionary capability and it seems to work except for a bug: if you give it words of 15 characters (more can't fit across a Scrabble board), when it reviews the custom dictionary (described in the manual), it will strip off the last characters causing it to accept any resulting miss-spellings. The Internet and network play features work fine, but do not allow more than one player on each computer. I have not tried to see if it allows a network game that includes connections on both Internet and network. I have not had any problems running the program under Windows 98, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional. There appears to be a minor bug in the video driver when switching back to it using Alt+Tab, but if the Scrabble screen doesn't come back, just use the mouse to paint it back (you'll see what I mean if you experience it). Too bad the game doesn't use a Window instead of full screen only. Even if it has been installed on the computer, you must have the CD in a drive to start the game. Once the game is started, the CD can (but need not) be removed. The overall menu system is a bit clumsy. You must often first click on your selection, making it yellow, and then on Okay (2 clicks, where one would have sufficed). The program also has a chat and sound capability for network and Internet use that is cute.

Rosetta Stone V3: Spanish (Latin America) Level 1-3 Set Review

(More customer reviews)I've tried out a variety of language software, and frankly, for the money, Rosetta Stone sucks.
In terms of teaching approach and ease of use, it's pretty comparable to the software available from Transparent Language... but it costs about 4-5 times as much.
Aside from expense, my biggest beef against the Rosetta Stone software is: it's BORING. It presents sets of four words or phrases at a time (occasionally more) - and then quizzes you on them before presenting the next set. But then it continues to repeat the previous words, at various intervals, without any variation in the teaching style.
Not only that; the pictures are the same across a lot of different language groups, so they're not culturally relevant. While this isn't an absolute must, I think it's easier to internalize the word for "girl" if the matching picture includes some aspect of the culture. For example: When I'm studying French and see a photo of a Chinese girl, it's not helpful, really... if anything, it's a distraction.
I highly recommend the Pimsleur audio courses in all languages. They're expensive to buy, but if you live in a city, they're probably available at your local library. I'd also say the Transparent Language software is a viable (and more fun) alternative and it's a lot cheaper. Eurotalk also offers video courses, some of which are fairly challenging. And if your computer is tolerant of older software, you might try Learn to Speak Spanish by the Learning Company (re-released by eLearning - I think). The Rocket language courses online aren't bad, either. But I think the myth should be dispelled that Rosetta Stone is some magical approach to learning languages, because it's not even as good as some courses which are significantly cheaper as well.

(More customer reviews)First off, this is an OEM software. That means it is intended to be installed on a new computer build NOT upgrade an existing copy of Windows. It is possible to install it on an existing computer by formatting an existing or new hard drive, but that would violate the license for this particular incarnation of Vista. If you want to install it on an existing computer, buy a full retail copy, or an upgrade copy.
I love Vista 64-bit. It is fast, easy to use, and the best Windows to date. Anyone who is still ripping Vista at this point doesn't own Vista, or is an inexperienced computer user, or a Mac fan that just wants to pour oil on a fire. Vista, the much belated and maligned 6th incarnation of the Windows operating system had real problems a year ago. Almost all of those problems have been fixed. Some of what users describe as problems are in fact less a problem with Vista than they are with computer buyer's perceptions and expectations.
So why is Vista beat up all the time? The most frequent complaint I hear is that it is a 'memory hog.' Honestly, this is a perception, not a reality. Vista does require more ran than XP, as XP required more than the previous windows, etc., etc. The reality is that RAM has gotten remarkably cheap, and using RAM liberally is a GOOD THING. The bottle neck in computing has been 4GB of ram on all 32-bit systems, but even with 4GB (3-3.5GB accessible to the system) almost no one will use all of the ram. With the 64-bit version, it is possible to run 8Gb of ram on a decent motherboard, and it is also possible to buy 8gb of RAM for $150! Why, in these days of super inexpensive RAM, don't those who feel Vista is too slow, just buy more? Honestly?
Another complaint is that drivers don't work or are not available for a particular software or hardware. There was a lot of truth to that a year ago. Now, after service pack 1, and over months of running Vista 64-bit exclusively, I can say that I have zero, yes zero, driver issues. Everything runs like a champ. I should note that I have a high end gaming computer, and have a lot of software installed. To not have a single driver issue is amazing, and something I could not say about XP one year into it's release.
If you know about computers, and are ready to make the switch to Vista, there has never been a better time. Most of the kinks are worked out, and while I can't promise you won't have any issues with drivers, it's getting less likely by the day. Programmers are catching on that Vista is not just going to disappear and everyone go back to XP, and that waiting for the next Windows will not put any money in their wallets, and have started to produce software written for Vista. Hardware manufacturers are also getting a clue and releasing solid Vista and Vista 64-bit drivers for their devices.
Frankly, this is the most powerful windows yet. 64-bit computing is hitting it's stride, and in another year or so, we'll all be looking back at 32-bit with the same derision as when the transition was made from 16 to 32 bit computers. 32 bit's days are numbered. It's time to move on.

Quicken 2003 Premier Home & Business Review

(More customer reviews)I have used Quicken for about 6 years now and love most of the program. However, the 2003 version is no improvement over 2002. The didn't fix many of the bugs and added a few new one. For example, you still can't edit your ESOP transaction once you enter them. One of the new bug is you can't resize the search results window.Also, Quicken has gone way overboard with advertising. The software in now basically ad-ware, which would be ok if they didn't sell it to you. Finally, the business functions are so cripple they're almost useless. You can't even chose the columns or entries on invoices.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 Professional Review

(More customer reviews)I am a quadriplegic and originally purchased Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 Professional for its ability to command WindowsXP, to dictate using Microsoft Word, navigate the internet using Microsoft Internet Explorer and Firefox, and to type messages during my IM sessions using AOL Instant Messenger. Although the program worked as promised for a time, as soon as Internet Explorer, Firefox and AIM came out with software version updates Dragon failed to function to spec. It still dictates in Word, and its native Dragon Pad. It does not do so consistently with my browsers, IE7 Firefox 2 or AIM 6.5. I was hoping there would be service updates as the products it is supposed to function with evolved, but that hasn't been the case. I am using a state of the art headset and my system far exceeds the suggested system requirements for the program. I dictated this comment in Dragon Pad and had my attendant cut and paste it onto Amazon.

Postal Review

(More customer reviews)Postal was an extremely controversial game when Ripcord Games released it back in 1997. Those people who want to ban everything under the sun were quite up in arms - figuratively, of course, not to mention ironically - about it. Postal supposedly corrupted the minds of the young, created violent criminals by inuring them to acts of cold-blooded murder, yada yada yada. All of those protests, of course, resulted in higher sales - which was Ripcord's marketing plan all along. These "ban everything under the sun" people just don't get it. The vast majority of us can actually separate fantasy from reality; we don't even come close to equating a game with real life. And Postal could not possibly be blamed for corrupting kids' minds - there's a great big M for Mature Audiences rating right on the box. If a child were to play this game, the blame would have to fall on the parents, not the software maker - but of course, a lot of parents won't accept the responsibility of actually raising their children when it's so much easier to just let them run wild and then blame society for their problems.
The funny thing about Postal is that, even back in 1997, the graphics were incredibly basic (almost anachronistic), the game was incredibly simple to master, and the whole thing could be played in one sitting. Despite all of this, I loved the game then and I love it now - and I love it for the reasons the critics hated it. It's hilarious. You play a guy who has gone Postal, and your only objective is to kill (with a pretty good range of increasingly destructive weapons) as many people as possible in a number of different settings - your yard, the junkyard, the farm, the construction site, etc. Cops and paramilitary types will try to stop and kill you, while a number of innocent civilians find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. You don't have to kill civilians to accomplish your objectives, but who can resist unleashing a few grenades in the midst of a marching band and then mowing the band members down as they run away in panic screaming "He's going Postal?" You don't just kill and move on, by the way. A lot of victims don't die immediately, so they'll be crawling around on the ground begging for mercy. It's up to you to let them die slowly or put them out of their misery, execution-style. If all the killing is more than you can take, you also have the option of pushing the suicide button (yelling "I regret nothing" as you shoot yourself in the head).
The strength of Postal is really the concept, not the gameplay. It's a short, incredibly easy game (although you can choose from 10 different skill levels) with relatively poor graphics, so you're probably not going to enjoy it unless you really buy into the violent concept. I still enjoy playing this game all these years after its release (and it does run in Windows XP without a hitch, by the way), but I can't say the gameplay in and of itself was ever all that impressive. Postal is the gaming equivalent of watching a good, low-budget horror film. It looks cheap, the special effects aren't really all that special, and yes, a lot of imaginary people die, but you can't help but enjoy the whole experience. And, when you're done, you walk away the same completely sane person you were when you sat down, with nary a compulsion to go out and do the violent things depicted on the screen.

Microsoft Windows Server Enterprise 2008 25 Client Review

(More customer reviews)IMPORTANT! Windows Server 2008 can be purchased in many different forms. Picking the correct kind of license for your needs is not easy--even Microsoft says so on their site. BEFORE you buy, stop by the Microsoft "How to Buy" site. Since I can't put links in Amazon reviews, here's how you find it:
Go to Microsoft's web site, from the Windows menu choose Windows Server. Next look in the bottom right corner for How to Buy & Deploy" and click on that.
I've worked with Server 2008 almost daily for a year and a half now, and even now that I've gotten to know it pretty well, I still find it to be a mixed bag. Microsoft deserves praise for their hard work at improving Security, but the core of their solution (User Account Control) evokes a chorus of boos from the Administrator, who now has to use three or more clicks for almost every action they take.
Then there's also the matter of IIS: Server 2008 is the first operating system to implement IIS 7.0, and this version is substantially different from the IIS 6.0 found in Server 2003. Gone is the metabase, gone is the interface, all to be replaced by an entirely new way of handling everything, top to bottom. It was nice of Microsoft to still leave an IIS 6.0 mode for backwards compatibility, but really if you're going to the lengths of moving up to 2008, sticking with IIS 6.0 for web application deployment is ignoring much of the point of upgrading a web application tier in the first place. Just as with the Security layer, the goal of the IIS redo is noble: make applications easier to manage and more portable than ever. The downside is the learning curve--you really need to toss out much of what you know and patiently spend some time digging around in the interface (and reading--I recommend the Server 2008 Administrator's Pocket Consultant) to get the hang of it. You'll also need to educate your developers a bit if you want to take true advantage of its portability: for example, new sections in the web.config are created to handle the new features in IIS. Much of what was in the Metabase is now integrated into the web.config to make it easier to move an application from one machine to another and not have to manually reconfigure everything.
There are other fringe benefits that don't always seem apparent. For example, while I still feel that file copies and disk performance are bafflingly slow (Server 2008 and Vista like to think about copying, tell you how long they think the copy will take, and then continually update that estimate as they perform the copy, in my opinion wasting a lot of time to do so), we have also seen massive improvements in larger operations: backing up and restoring the system is exponentially faster for a Server 2008 box than it is Server 2003. Reboots seem to be quicker. Applications have more than one choice for memory management: Integrated mode threads resources noticeably better for our web applications than the "Classic" Mode that is more backwards compatible. Support for virtualization in both Hyper-V and VMWare has for us been (mostly) hassle-free. With both Vista and Server 2008 comes a Power Shell (command-line interface) that is amazingly strong: you can seemingly do almost anything at all using only a command line, if that sort of thing floats your boat.
The only remaining thing keeping Server 2008 from receiving much acclaim ties back into the security tedium I mentioned earlier. Reading the Event Viewer now involves an ugly, boxy interface that doesn't easily lend itself to resizing windows or boxes. Modifying a config file isn't as easy as right-clicking the file and opening in Notepad: you have to manually run Notepad as Administrator, respond to the UAC prompts, then choose File-->Open and manually browse to the file. The same is true for Command Prompts: if you don't run them as Administrator, there's seriously very little that you can accomplish. You can't copy from another machine directly into the web root: you will need to place your files in another folder on Windows Server 2008 and then locally copy them forward. And for security reasons, you cannot easily register an Assembly on the box: where Server 2003 would let you copy/paste or drag/drop, now you have to place the assembly in another folder and use the command line to manually register/unregister the assembly. IIS doesn't always pick up handler mappings: sometimes what I see in my developer's web.config I have to then manually re-add in the IIS interface.
If you're thinking of upgrading your Server 2000 or Server 2003 to 2008, you will find youself with what is ultimately safer, more powerful...and more frustrating. At the time I am writing this (Feb. 2010), I'd suggest that Server 2008 is, like Vista, not as polished and user friendly as its newer cousins Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2. Server 2008 inserts a learning curve into its use and a lot of gateways that slow down simple tasks. One can see where Microsoft was going with the new model: it just doesn't make the transition very gracefully.

Norton Internet Security 2001 3.0 Family Edition Review

(More customer reviews)I have been using Norton Internet Security for two years now and I am very happy with it. The installation was pretty painless, and the configuration is fairly simple. If you want you can just select "High-Medium-Low" type settings or you can go into the advanced sections and tweak the firewall to your hearts content.
The reason I selected this over other firewall products are the extras: ad blocking, a few more privacy features, and anti-virus protection. The ad-blocking speeds up my Internet connection because I don't have to download all those adds and pop up windows. Privacy settings keep web sites from tracking my page jumps, and it lets me manage who I will accept cookies from (though the cookie management is a little clunky). Bundling the anti-virus saves me the trouble of buying one separately.
Unlike some Norton products I've owned in the past, I haven't had any software conflicts, and the auto-update utility works seamlessly. If you have a DSL or Cable Modem, and you don't have a firewall installed, you are crazy. I get security alerts every month or so letting me know about a Trojan Horse or some other attempt to mess with my PC. Norton blocks the attacks, pops up a warning, and logs the IP address of the attacker, which I usually pass on to my ISP. I've also logged onto security sites that will run port scans on your system and look for security holes and Norton has passed every time.

PC Maclan 8.1 Review

(More customer reviews)If you want to use a Windows system in an already functioning Macintosh network, this software is an extremely convenient tool. I've been a long time Mac only user at home, but recently bought a Sony vaio notebook with Windows 2000 Professional pre-installed. I tested this product and Thursby Software's TSSTalk. With PC MacLan, I could do everything I wanted to do, including to see and use all the Mac file structure that contains Japanese file names and to print directly to my Apple LaserWriter Pro 600, which only has local talk interface. With TSSTalk, double byte file names are garbled even though both the Mac 0S 9 English and the Win2k English are set to be Japanese capable. Also, with TSSTalk, the AppleTalk printers are not visible from the Win2k system, and thus not usable at all, and it still has some other small bugs in the Win2k version. All things considered, PC MacLan is head and shoulders above the competition.

(More customer reviews)This is an excellent product if you want to make the most out of your good hardware box and not spending for an extra hardware. Suppose you have enough memory to utilize for an extra OS, enough disk space and plenty of NIC bandwidth (that we usually have), why not run an application in another virtual OS on top of the first one. Mind that, the physical connection of NIC is 1 per physical card so you need to put the virtual hosts/servers within the same VLAN or subnet. The security is also good, it just treats the virtual machine as another machine on the same network.
Portability of the defined virtual hosts from one box to another is another good thing, you just to need to copy the iamge file(s).
I tried to run Solaris 10 for x86 on it, no luck, I dont think they claim it does support either, so pretty clear, anyways Solaris 10 has zoning feature that you can use.
Overall good product for development and testbeds but I do not recommend for production environments.

(More customer reviews)We have been using Lantastic since it came out and I had to link two computers together for the first time in our start up business. Lantastic has allowed me to slowly add faster and faster computers and relegate the older ones down the line with out interrupting the business or killing the cash flow. Older computers with older operating systems work flawlessly on the LAN. We have not found a software package that didn't run, but found that the software companies do not test for compatibility AND "don't support it" however it works just the same. We have missed the Virus problems by virtue of not using a "main stream" system. I am satisfied, greatful and pray for their continuing success.

(More customer reviews)If you buy this product and you have a problem, you need to understand that YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN.
Repeated attempts to contact customer service and tech support were unsuccessful. My wife was on the phone for forty-five minutes. I was on the phone for over an hour. Repeated email contacts were ignored. I even engaged a local media outlet to help. One of the local radio stations has a host who has a computer news show. They ignored him too.
What was the problem? After the first installation, we couldn't attach to their server to update the definitions. (Yes, we had an active Internet connection). How do you like that. The software is out of date from the first use and you can't do anything about it.
Finally, I gave up and bought one of their competitor's products. You should too.
