Another internet security let down. The first problem I encountered was it trying to block Internet Explorer; my options were "Allow once" or "Deny Once", I'd click "Allow Once" since there was no "Always allow" option, and up comes the prompt a second later >_< On top of that, half of the pages I go to won't load, downloads freeze, and it made my broadband connection twice as slow. I gave it 2 stars because it does seem to be protecting against attacks but ruining my connection and ability but I've come to expect this from internet security programs.

Norton 360 3.0 1-User/3Pc Review

Norton 360 3.0 1-User/3Pc
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first started using Norton 360 on my laptop running Windows XP and it was pretty awful. It would always "ding" an alert or notice on every legitimate web site or online retailer. In addition, my laptop became terribly s-l-o-w. So bad in fact I thought it was my memory, and even with a memory upgrade it was crawling along. After that experience, I evolved into a new laptop running Windows Vista and bought Kaspersky Internet Security. This was a total disaster. Kaspersky, in my experience, is total junk! EVERY web page and browsing experience was blocked with so many "threat" notices that I had to disable it just to use Internet explorer. Not even Mozilla Firefox had a chance. So, in need of relief, I saw this "new" version of Norton 360. I removed the Kaspersky and installed Norton 360 Version 3.0 (As of April 8, 2009 be careful what you buy, when I was shopping, many stores were still carrying the older 2.0 version.) I did cautiously backup my system before installing this, and after installing it; it pretty much works as described. It will keep log-ins, and passwords stored within its program for various sites, like Amazon.com for example and these are password protected.
What is more noticeable to me, over my past experience with Norton 360 Version 1.0 is the "diet" the software has undergone. On my laptop, again running Windows Vista, (two years old) there does not appear to be any lag, or sluggishness, and you could argue it is faster than when Kaspersky was running. At first I thought the protection was not running, but it is, and I don't notice it.
As far as options, there is a Premier Version 3.0 and a "plain" Version 3.0. The main difference, as you see on the back of the box, is an upgrade in online storage. I have not tried to use the online storage and don't plan on using it. I already have a big enough external back-up drive and I do not like uploading my personal or sensitive files for someone else to hold onto. But it's your call in the end.
Pros: "light" software, hardly noticeable, compatible with Windows Vista, and able to securely remember log-ins and passwords
Cons: Having to buy this every year
Hope this review helps!

Panda Antivirus + Firewall 2007 Review

Panda Antivirus + Firewall 2007

I have used Panda Antivirus for many years and I can't recall ever getting a virus or at least none that caused any damage. Once in a while I will check my system with another scanner just to see if Panda is preventing viruses and it appears to be doing an excellent job. Rarely do I ever find any viruses that are able to slip by Panda. You won't find a better antivirus prevention program. It also does a good job on automatic updates. It's non-intrusive and runs quietly in the background. The additional protection of the firewall is a plus and the firewall seems to work well too. Generally I don't like bundled packages, but this combination seems to work flawlessly. The firewall doesn't have much configurability, so if that's important to you, you might want to just get the antivirus product instead of the combo, but you can turn off the firewall if you want. The real downside to Panda is that sometimes the install can be a nightmare. I don't recall having much of an issue with the 2007 version, but some earlier versions were just horrendous. If you can deal with a sometimes quirky install and finally get it working, the payoff is well worth the struggle. Some of the easier to install, better known competitors just don't provide as much protection. Something else to be aware of is that Webroot SpySweeper (a popular anti-spyware program) had some serious conflicts with Panda's scan. This is not the fault of Panda and Webroot has corrected most of the conflicts in their current version. There still appears to be one big conflict, but there is a workaround for it. Panda's support can be a little spotty at times. Sometimes I have gotten good response; other times it has been a bit slow. They always seem to respond even if it takes a while. Since the product works so well once up and running it is rare that you would even need support; most likely you'll need it an install time. If you are building a new system, install it early and you shouldn't have any issues. As security products tend to get more comprehensive, there are a bound to be more conflicts and if you try to run multiple products you can have difficulty. Panda seems no worse (and no better) than any others in that regard. I highly recommend it even with the caveats mentioned here.

Bought the product when it was launched in September and since then I feel quite secure. Includes protection against viruses, spyware and phising so it's good-enough-protection if you are not doing a very intensive use of the Internet and visit mostly trusted websites.
Ups:
- It's very light. Takes a little while when you turn on the computer to update the virus file and do the scanning, but it's not too annoying and it's worthwile to be protected.
- It detects a huge ammount of malware, specially spyware
- It's really easy to install and use
- It includes protection for up to 2 PCs at a very reasonable price
Downs:
- It is a little slow on the PC startup
- It'll be great to obtain firewall protection for the same price
In general a great product. Wouldn't change it for other.

McAfee VirusScan Plus 2009 3-User Review

McAfee VirusScan Plus 2009 3-User
Average Reviews:

Unethical billing for online purchases -- BEWARE!
Let me say right up front if you DO NOT USE the online download and payment process which McAfee offers, then you should not be subjected to their unethical practices (unless/until you renew online.)
I've used McAfee for several years now, and the product, once paid for and installed, in my experience, has been fine. Yes, it gets annoying at times, with its checks and confirmations, but that's what we want: software to protect us, and that comes with some caveats.
But McAfee has finally LOST me as a customer, with their insidious and unethical billing practices. These practices are so awful that the product absolutely deserves zero stars, regardless of its functionality.
My 1-year subscription to VirusScan ended a few days ago. This was a 3-user subscription, which I had obtained for free from a financial services company with whom I do business. It was a one-time deal, so now I need to pay to renew. This was my experience:
First, the renewal price was discounted through the financial services company, to around forty bucks, which was less than I saw online elsewhere. I proceeded to pay with PayPal. Just BEFORE I pressed the "return to McAfee" button, Paypal told me that I could review the "billing agreement" (what billing agreement?) by logging back into Paypal, going to "Profile," and kicking "Pay List" (what Pay List?) I did so, and found that McAfee, WITHOUT ANY NOTICE, AND WITHOUT MY PERMISSION had set up an automatic billing allowance on my PayPal account for one hundred twenty dollars per month! Here is the exact text: "Billing Limit: $119.97 USD (per month)" Needless to say, I immediately canceled that authorization, before "returning to McAfee." McAfee of course complained that there was an "error," but I simply proceeded to pay with credit card.
That's when I saw the very small type, in GRAY (hard-to-read) coloring, saying that my credit card would be billed automatically, upon expiration of the license, at the full renewal rate at that time.
That's enough, McAfee! You stop these unethical billing practices right now! You've lost another customer, and hopefully many more with this review.

Panda Internet Security 2007 Review

Panda Internet Security 2007
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Unlike the previous two reviewers, I have had a very positive experience with Panda Internet Security 2007, and as such I am offering up a different perspective. All has not been perfect, but it has been positive overall and I can recommend this product based on my experience with it.
I upgraded to Panda Internet Security 2007, Platinum Edition (I'll just refer to it as "Panda" hereafter), from Trend Micro's PC-Cillin suite after a recurring issue forced me to make a decision. I had had good experiences with Trend and was loathe to change, so changing was not something I really wanted to do. After checking my options and doing some research, I decided to give Panda a chance.
Panda's installation was a bit sluggish but it was not unreasonably slow. It did all of the prerequisite checks before configuration and finally it determined that it was ready to install itself. The installation at this point was smooth and straightforward and when it was done it (understandably) asked me to reboot the system.
Once the system rebooted, I was off to the races. Panda immediately started to look at programs that were trying to access the network, it flagged me down when I had incoming port scan attacks, and it dutifully logged everything going on. It also did something else - it started giving pop-up bulletins. Within 30 minutes I must have received 3 or 4 pop-up bulletins that contained informational messages, not alerts that demanded attention. While these can be configured to not show up, I was just a little annoyed by the frequency under the default settings. These bulletins have decreased since that time.
Panda's first order of business was to eliminate everything it considered to be spyware. This equated to deleting a lot of cookies. Most of these were benevolent, but some were obviously tracking cookies. Panda also seems to be eliminating these types of things when they first reach the system, which in my opinion is a good policy.
The firewall does what you would expect a firewall to to - it keeps unwanted traffic out and it prevents programs from reaching the net without your knowledge or approval. A program can be "locked down" and denied all access, and through the firewall profile you can make changes and tweaks to access.
I did some testing with the antivirus, and it worked relatively quickly to scan the entire system. I was able to tell it to work in the background with reduced CPU requirements and as a result the system did not slow down enough to make it unusable. As of yet it has not found a virus on the system so I just don't know how it will react to one when/if it finds one. My assumption is that I will get another pop-up bulletin.
The integrated antispam has yet to prove itself. I use a different antispam product, but Panda still does an evaluation on every inbound message. So far it seems to be properly marking messages as spam or not spam by the footer it places at the bottom of every message, but the other product I use has done the bulk of the work already. I am waiting to see how Panda handles spam messages that slip through the gauntlet and into my inbox. What I have seen thus far suggests that it will probably manage well enough. The antispam does integrate with Outlook automatically and gives a couple of new buttons for classifying spam when it comes.
By default, the parental control feature is turned off, and I decided to turn it on. This is one of the features of Panda I don't especially like. It manages access through the parental controls by way of profiles with passwords. So, when you have an internet connection and you have parental controls turned on, Panda requires a password just to get out the net at all. Granted, this is only required one time for the connection, but it is cumbersome and annoying. This type of set-up is not well-suited for family computing but is better for office and academic environments. After testing it for a little while and determining that it seems to work fairly well, I turned it off to avoid getting chastised by my family. I would likely use this more if there was a way to tell it to filter the same way for everyone without requiring a password.
Panda queries for updates daily. This is reassuring to me, knowing that I am almost always very current and have the latest signature files. I regard this as mostly psychological though, as I doubt I will ever encounter a virus that is new enough to require this tight of an upgrade schedule. The heuristic scan feature of the antivirus is likely to handle anything like that anyway.
One of the more interesting features of Panda is the TruPrevent functionality. Basically, this is a behavioral analysis of applications and processes on the system, which looks for unusual or suspicious activity. So far this has turned up nothing on my system, but it is reassuing to know it's running in the background. This kind of analysis should be used cautiously, though, as there is always a potential for false positives.
Visually, Panda is a very simple and straightforward application with a no-nonsense interface. You are not going to be overwhelmed with buttons and sliders and lists and everything else all jumbled on the screen in one big box, but rather everything is kept as simple as possible. Sometimes this means having to dig a little to find the setting you need, but honestly I think the interface is reasonably self-explanatory.
The most difficulty I had with Panda was in registering the product. I got a pop-up bulletin that offered a discount if I registered then, and I had already made my mind up to do so, so I followed the offer link. I was taken to a page all in Spanish (this is not entirely unexpected as I believe that Panda is based in Spain). I manageed to reach the English equivalent page, entered the requisite information and the website returned a very short error message. I got through several hours later and got through the registration process, only to find that I was sold the wrong product from the link. To resolve the issue I had to call their office and work it out on the phone.
With only a couple of minor annoyances and one registration issue, I have had a very positive experience with Panda. The application is not overly burdensome to my computer, it seems to be very quick and efficient, and it has kept me informed of issues as they arise. I consider this a good solution and I am happy to recommend it.

Purchased this a while ago and recieved it yesterday.
Reason? My computer was moving much slower than it used to. Mcafee scans my computer everyday, and doesn't find anything, yet it was fully updated. I had a feeling it wasn't working.
When I installed this thing, I scanned it right away. This is what it found:
Viruses: 67
Spyware: 312
Adware: 51
After the scan, everything was deleted and my computer ran like new again. I am very pleased with Panda's software and will purchase again if needed.

McAfee Internet Security 2009 1-User
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I tried the previous version which I considered average, Internet Security 2009 seems to be improved in a number of areas,
Installation was trouble free. McAfee gives you the choice of installing the version on your CD or downloading the most current version. This is a sensible approach, I think. I chose the download it sent smoothly. Even with the downloading, the install went pretty quickly.
For my testing, I installed it on a system running Windows XP SP2 Media Center, having first uninstalled the free Comodo anti-virus and firewall applications running on the machine.
I could not complete the registration/activation process because McAfee's server did not respond. Thus, I was unable to learn if McAfee still forces you to give them a credit card number for automatic renewal of your anti-virus subscription. You weren't able to cancel this forced transaction online: you had to call McAfee. A poor way to do business in my opinion.
McAfee may have changed this policy somewhat. In combing through their Customer Support area, I learned that it may only be online purchasers who get nailed this way.
The problem with an ordinary person testing ant-virus programs is that unlike a formal lab, they may not have a bunch of viruses and malware lurking in their machines. I can tell you that the anti-virus scanning speed appears to be high and doesn't over burden the CPU, which is nice when compared with some other programs, like Norton's.
The Help file will leave most users pretty much in the dark with its brusque explanations. For example, an inexperienced user wanting to change the firewall settings for some reason may quickly be reduced to pulling their hair out.
McAfee, to its credit, does an excellent job of identifying the applications on your machine and setting the right firewall permissions for them. I don't know how it will do when you add new programs to your system.
McAfee has put a lot of features into Internet Security 2009 at a very reasonable price for three users. Some of them, such as the file shredder and file cleaner, aren't mentioned on the box. Neither is the back up program or the network manager. I didn't try any of these features.
Overall, I think Internet Security 2009 is an improved product over last year's version. It seems to execute faster and hog fewer system resources. Happily the number of inrusive pop-ups seems to have been substantialy reduced. For the money, it seems to be a good, solid product.
Jerry

McAfee SpamKiller 4.0 Review

McAfee SpamKiller 4.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This software "gets rid" of spam by logging in to your POP3 account and looking for any spam-like messages. It then downloads the messages into the Spamkiller program so that you can review them. It also claims to send automatic complaints and error messages for every downloaded spam message that it loads. After you download your spam messages, you log in to your POP3 server again with your e-mail program, hopefully to find only real mail waiting for you there.
The software comes bundled inside the McAfee Security Center so that it is fully integrated with their other products. A huge problem with the security center is that it puts an automatic task into your task scheduler that tries to update the security center products automatically every 5 minutes, even waking the computer from power-off if necessary. Unfortunately, and unbelievably, these settings cannot be changed. If you try to change them or even delete the task, or even delete the task scheduler applet, when you restart the computer, the task appears again and continues to wake your computer every 5 minutes. This is not a good thing for laptops. I've fought with this for a week, and the technical support at McAfee was most unsympathetic. After having my battery drain down to zero yesterday following an important presentation in which error messages from the scheduler kept popping up every 5 minutes in my PowerPoint, I am totally fed up.
I've never been able to log-in to get updates anyway. Although I registered my software a week ago, McAfee hasn't added my customer name and password to their database to allow me to log in to their system. Again, their tech support services have not been any help with this. This leaves me quite dubious about any McAfee products.

Get the e-mail you want and nothing else. McAfee's SpamKiller quickly and easily helps you stop spam from polluting your inbox using advanced rule-based and list-based filtering. SpamKiller now works with MSN Hotmail.
SpamKiller blocks specific addresses of known spammers just as other programs do, but SpamKiller goes far beyond lists. Its comprehensive preset filters also watch for subject lines and text within messages. In fact, SpamKiller can filter based on the sender's address, subject line, body text, and message header, and can even block spam based on the message's country of origin. SpamKiller comes with thousands of filters already installed, and new filters are released regularly, based on careful analysis of McAfee.com's spam traps. SpamKiller checks McAfee.com servers once a day for new filters, so your protection is always up-to-date.
SpamKiller supports MSN Hotmail, POP3, and MAPI e-mail accounts. By directly supporting multiple client-based e-mail applications (Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape, etc.) and Web-based e-mail clients (MSN Hotmail), SpamKiller enables you to benefit from its advanced filtering without forcing you to change how you access and read your e-mail. If you're new to fighting spam, you'll love SpamKiller's filter wizard, which lets you create new filters based on spam messages you've received. Simply choose the part of the message you want to filter on, and SpamKiller does the rest.
Spam e-mail is automatically placed into SpamKiller's Killed Mail folder so your inbox remains uncluttered and free of spam; it is held in quarantine and erased automatically after 30 days. If for some reason a legitimate e-mail is flagged as spam, you can easily recover in one quick step. To make things even easier, SpamKiller can automatically import legitimate contacts' e-mail addresses into its friends list, ensuring that their messages aren't mistaken for spam. You may also add new friends, newsletters, or complete domains to the friends list at any time.
SpamKiller does more than just eliminate spam. It's also an e-mail monitor that can check and filter e-mail from multiple e-mail accounts. Monitor and filter your home e-mail from work or your work e-mail from home. And SpamKiller can alert you when new e-mail has arrived.
If you want to fight back, SpamKiller makes it easy to send complaints. Send automatic or manual complaints, make your e-mail address look invalid to spammers, and much more. SpamKiller automatically finds and suggests the relevant e-mail addresses in both headers and text, so complaining to spammers, Web site hosts, ISPs, or anybody else just takes a few mouse clicks. The result: more spammers have their accounts cancelled.

In a nut shell, I'm out all the money I spent on this software since I can't use it! I would definately recommend not buying McAfee Internet Security 4.0.

McAfee Internet Security 2009 - 3 User (15Mo. Protection) and McAfee Anti-Theft 09 Review

McAfee Internet Security 2009 - 3 User (15Mo. Protection) and McAfee Anti-Theft 09

This applies to all 3 versions of McAfee and Computer Associates Secuirty Suite Software I've used over the past 5 years, therefore I suspect it applies to all of them, more or less. First note that on a 2.3 GHz machine with 1 GB of RAM and Windows XP Home Edition, that passes all hardware tests and runs like a charm with other firewall and anti-virus software; when I start up the machine and log on, I might as well go do something else for at least 5 minutes. If the McAfee's security suite finds it needs updates, I might as well wait for 20 minutes. During these startup times, the hard disk is perpetually busy and the CPU resources being used often reach 100%, with various resources at the top of the use list starting with "Mc" (e.g., Mcshield, mcupdui), when sorted by usage rate. Under this condition, any attempt to do anything else means waiting forever for the system to respond to a mouse-click, programs take forever to start, and file selector dialog pull-down menus and context (right-click) menus may not respond for a minute or more.
Some details:
1. When McAfee's Security Suite is starting up, there is no way to tell what it's actually doing. I can therefore only suspect that these initial 5 minutes have something to do with a startup scan (which most anti-virus software does). But what is being scanned, I don't know. What I do know is that the Security Suite was running when I last shut the system down, so it must be looking for the viruses and trojans that snuck into the computer while it was turned off...or they don't have much confidence in the effectiveness of their software. Maybe they know something they're not telling us.
2. McAfee (and CA) apparently have never heard of incremental updates. When I was still using dial-up, I had to give up on CA Security, because almost every update was around 17 mB and there were several every week! (17 mB at my typical 50.6 kbps connection speed takes about an hour, but a dial-up session that long typically got dropped at least once, and if you didn't sit in front of the computer the whole time, you'd come back to shut down the computer and discover you had to start over. Also, see item 3, below.) Judging from the time the updating icon is visible in the system tray, the downloads are still huge, though with high speed that's not such a problem; however, based on the "tooltips" that update icon displays, I must be getting not just virus (etc.) definition data updates but regular major program updates (sometimes 2 or 3 times in a week, sometimes requiring system restarts). The requirement to be continually updating the programs suggests sloppy programming (yes, that applies to Microsoft, too).
3. McAfee apparently has also never heard of managed downloads. If I'm connected via wireless where the signal isn't strong and clean and/or security is high (e.g., WPA2), there may be interruptions in the wireless signal. I was once connected to a signal that broke off every few minutes and took over 10 seconds to be reacquired. With that connection, McAfee never updated, because at every interruption it had to start over, and the files being downloaded were so large, downloading would not complete in a few minutes. Naturally, McAfee's software kept telling me my protection wasn't up-to-date, but it wasn't smart enough to know there wasn't anything I could do about it. Sure, they could say "get a better connection", but the fact is, the only thing I needed a better connection for was so McAfee's Security Suite could be updated. As it is, I'm paying for a high-speed connection mainly to support the security problems that come from the Internet (Windows updates and Security Suite updates).
4. McAfee appears to take their cue on informing the user from Microsoft. With all that disk grinding and slow system response, it is impossible to determine from their software just what the software is doing that's tying up the machine.
5. The only machine I use on which McAfee Security Suite that doesn't seem to get in the way is a 2.8 gHz Pentium D (dual core) with 2 gB of RAM and Windows XP Professional.
I began typing this while McAfee was doing one of its long updates. Now it's telling me I have to restart the machine, and I'm not looking forward to that, because now I'll have to wait an unknown amount of time for it to finish starting up. Do yourself a favor and avoid McAfee (and Computer Associates) security software. Their philosopy appears to be, "the user's computer exists for the purpose of running our software, and if they don't like the way they have to work when they use our software, they need to get a faster machine". If your machine doesn't at least approximate the capabilities of the machine under 5. above, you will probably curse the day you bought their security software.

Account edge customer service is terrible, there had been a problem since day 1 with logging on to the program, and I could not get any answers...The only answer customer service had was to call there tech line, which is $4.00 a minute...I was promised calls back to remedy my situation...never got any. I emailed the general manager with my concerns, and she never responded...DISGUSTING!!!!! Buyer beware!!!!!

SingleClick Wireless Network Ignition Review

SingleClick Wireless Network Ignition

like millions of other home PC users my LAN has evolved and grown over the past few years, as more whiz bang devices have become available to my network. It's unfortunate that Microsoft always seems to be several steps behind the curve. In my case, my LAN went from wired (just 2 pc's, a router & a cable modem) then adding a third Wi-Fi ready laptop for the wife, and then later a NAS mass storage device (for back-up, MP3 storage, temp photo & video file storage to view listen to on the Home entertainment center. I run all linksys networking equipment. But, I was having a real tough time keeping my wife's new laptop configured & propery connected to the Wi-Fi LAN ... I had read a positive review of Ignition and decided to give it a try. All configuration problems on the Laptop were SOLVED within 10 minutes after installing the program. (This does require turning OFF (disabling) the Windows XP network setup software and turning over full control to Wireless Ignition.
I do have two support related peeves. ... First after visting the companies website & perusing the press releases I noticed they had released a new version 2.0 in May-2005; I was shipped version 1.1 yet no upgrade to the latest software was available, not quite fair IMHO. Secondly, I've seen no commitment by the publisher to support the program for any length of time into the future. IMO, 12 months of e-mail/website support ought to be included. Who knows maybe there just getting the kinks worked out at a young and probably rapidly growing company. but hey, it helped me out and I'd use it again on another PC.

McAfee Total Protection 2009 3-User Review

McAfee Total Protection 2009 3-User
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When computer users were searching for a term to apply to computer programs that came loaded with viruses, harmful DRM (Digital Rights Management) or other insidious ways of slowing down the user's computer, they eventually settled on "Malware."
Its time to coin a new term for programs like McAfee Total Protection. My complaints against the program are only partially related to its ability to filter out viruses and keep a computer free of junk.
The real issue with this program, and many, many others is that it will constantly steal the users focus by popping up text boxes from the Taskbar in Windows. These can come at ANY time the computer is on. They alert the user to the fact that "McAfee has installed updates," or "It is time to restart the computer" to the neverendingly frustrating "Your subscription is about to expire." These boxes can and will pop up while immersed in a full screen computer game, at times causing it to crash. They will pop up when you are working on editing digital photos, or watching a movie, or anything else that requires your full attention.
The term "nagware," came to mind, and maybe it will stick. Feel free to put your suggestions in the comments section of this review.
I understand why they do this. It is intended for novice computer owners who need to be reminded of all of these things, and who don't consider having their 'focus' (the primary task the computer user is working on. For example, as I write this review, it is my primary focus) stolen as EXTREMELY frustrating. That wouldn't even be a big deal, except that McAfee in their infinite wisdom has provided no remedy for the power user. We cannot turn off these irritating messages. They come regardless of my desire to see them or not.
They are amazingly irritating, especially if they disrupt something immersive, like a computer game or movie. Imagine: you are watching your new blue-ray of "The Dark Knight," and just as Batman is about to dispense with the Joker, a text box pops up with the message "McAfee has finished installing updates" in a gray box in the corner of the screen. Unacceptable in the first place, and even more so because you CANNOT TURN THIS FEATURE OFF! This gets unbearable when your subscription is a few months from expiring, and alerts informing you of that pop up literally every time you use the computer. Also, they don't just leave after they pop up, the user is required to click 'ok.' You cannot permanently disable these messages.
As a virus scanner, McAfee works relatively well. It will scan your system for viruses, and if your definitions are up-to-date, find them some of the time. However, it is pretty strange that after making virus software for so many years, they still cannot provide a reasonably well working Spyware hunter that is anywhere near as good as the free version of "Ad-Aware" offered by Lavasoft, or the retail version of "Spybot Search and Destroy."
Another major complaint is the sheer size of the system resource footprint that McAfee total protection takes up. If you have an older computer, less than 2gb of ram (4gb with Vista), this program will create a very noticeable slowdown in your computer's performance. Comparing to how it runs on my wife's laptop with 4gb of ram vs. some of the computers at my work with only 1.5gb, the older work computers are drastically slowed down by McAfee, while my wife's laptop with its 4gb of ram is not really affected. (I do not use this program on my computer for the reasons that I've laid out above).
In concussion, if you don't care about 1. Annoying pop ups that steal your focus and cannot be disabled, 2. Very limited spyware removal and 3. Slow and poorly written code that uses a large portion of system resources, you MIGHT consider buying this software.
*****UPDATE 09-15-2009*****
Still have this program installed on my wife's laptop, and it's still popping up annoying and useless advertisements despite the fact that I've turned off all notifications in the options tab--you can see the most recent one that I took a screen shot of in the 'customer images' section of this Amazon page. When the license runs out in a few months I will be uninstalling this program and replacing it with AVAST home edition which is free. I can't recommend this program to anyone. Save yourself the money and get a free alternative like AVAST or AVG.
*****UPDATE 01-01-2010*****
Microsoft has recently released their excellent MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS for fee. It also recently won an award for being the best anti-virus program out there. Bests of all it's FREE to anyone with a valid copy of Windows (XP through Windows 7). I've been using it for a few months now and let me tell you, it's just about the best anti-virus I've encountered. Searches are wicked fast, the interface is slick, and best of all it has a tiny memory footprint! Updates are free FOREVER. Did I mention the program itself is completely free? Just Google search MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS, download, install, and you're good to go.
