The Oracle of Changes Review

The Oracle of Changes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a physician, columnist and lecturer (on natural health and spiritual systems), I am always searching for new presentations of ancient material. The Oracle of Changes CD is a refreshing take... and wondered why no one had done this sooner! I found the music soothing (perhaps a decent set of speakers is best for the full effect). I enjoyed the rendering of the 'cave of the oracle' I entered and the 'pool of reflection' I "sat" in front of to begin the reading. Realistic hands throw the coins for you 6 times and the lines appear on the screen. The artwork that accompanied each hexagram is full of imagery and purpose (longtime students of the I Ching may recognize the deeper meanings). The explanation of the hexagrams and line changes is given by a VERY soothing and clear female voice. Bonuses: The CD allows the user to save the answers in a journal for later reference. You can type in the number of any hexagram in stead of a question and get to that answer without a full reading. The CD also allows yarrow or coin toss odds; it's the user's choice. A great pick!

VirusScan Professional 7.0 Review

VirusScan Professional 7.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Virusscan 7 is big disappointment over the previous versions. The interface is clunkier, the background scanner often experiences a massive memory leak, which will eat up 700MB of Ram/Swap space before crashing, and it's a pain to get to the advanced options.
But my biggest problem was that if you EXPLICITELY opt to not install the firewall, Mcafee still puts a rudimentary filter in (just no GUI) that has a tenacious ability to hose your internet settings. Windows will complain that it is unable to create sockets, and as a result many server applications will not work (Apache, Telnet).

Black Ice Defender Review

Black Ice Defender
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
in the past I have used many different firewalls. The famous "Atguard", Zonealarm, and now Black ice. I spent [$] on it, it said that it stops hackers cold. I frequently visit a web site called "shields up", it tries to probe your ports and test your security. using Black Ice, it was sucsessful in probing port 139, and NETBios. (thats not good), and I found that I was not in full stealth mode. Using the free Zonealarm firewall, all of your ports are in full stealth mode, however recent rumors suggesting that zonealarm may actually be spyware convinced me to get rid of it. In addition to Black Ice, I downloaded a free firewall called "Tiny Personal Firewall", it is very good, and makes my ports invisible, just as zonealarm. Another problem I had after intstalling Black Ice, is that my PC would just turn off, and I would get kicked off the internet often, also, since I have had it, it hasnt picked up a single hacker, and I have it set on "paranoid" mode, however the Tiny Persoanl firewall, has picked up, and blocked a number of attemps made by hackers to get into my system. If I could do it again, I would have saved my [$]. Dont but Black Ice. Download "Tiny Persoanl Firewall"....its good, and it's free! :)

Peachtree Complete Accounting 2002 Review

Peachtree Complete Accounting 2002
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a financial services company that includes bookkeeping and have used Quickbooks and Peachtree extensively. For the smallest businesses either product will do the job. However, Peachtree has in my opinion a much stronger product for the price. I have switched several customers from QuickBooks to Peachtree but never the other way. I am not surprised the person had conflicts with his network installation. I did find a few bugs with the newest version of Peachtree(mainly related to G/L reporting) and will watch closely to see how quickly they have updates. In the past they have been really good with updates, however, with new ownership I do caution what kind of tech support and "customer first" service you will receive. The person that wrote that its competition is NOT Quickbooks is mostly right. It is the OTHER product in the price range and the "best marketed" and will do the job for most mom and pop operations(though after seeing what people do in QB that have no bookkeeping skills you could be better off with using a paper system, believe me) Quickbooks is poorly designed and set up in comparison. I consider QB a PRO version of Quicken in its design and use of "registers". Peachtree is much more powerful and offers alot more to people that want to expand there accounting system in the future. However, both programs slow down considerably over the network when your company size gets very large(Over 20 MB etc.). Another Caveat is Complete accounting is not compatible with the other 2002 versions. I have some clients that don't need the extra features and network compatibility BUT I set up there books on my Peachtree, backed it up and brought it to them to restore and WAS INCOMPATIBLE. Not sure if that effects anyone else but just a mention. Overall it is comparable to the features you find in products I've seen bought for $10,000+++. The only thing you really get for the extra thousands is the ability to handle more than 5 workstations and better database management. Also learning Crystal Reports can take some time but with it you can do anything with Peachtree as to reporting. By far best value in the price range.

McAfee Firewall Review

McAfee Firewall
Average Reviews:

I hope you work in networking or have prior experience with firewalls, because, if you don't, you'll have only cursory understanding of this product. They provide no substantial documentation either in the box or on their website. Since I work in this field, I was able to figure it out on my own, but you're probably better off shelling out a few more bucks for 'Black Ice Defender' or 'Norton Personal Firewall'. As for the actual software, it seems to work fine and has most of the standard features for firewall software in this price range. Overall, it's a good package for anyone looking for simple protection for their home systems and will keep all but the serious hackers out.

Rosetta Stone V3: Spanish (Latin America) Level 1-3 Set Review

Rosetta Stone V3: Spanish (Latin America) Level 1-3 Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've tried out a variety of language software, and frankly, for the money, Rosetta Stone sucks.
In terms of teaching approach and ease of use, it's pretty comparable to the software available from Transparent Language... but it costs about 4-5 times as much.
Aside from expense, my biggest beef against the Rosetta Stone software is: it's BORING. It presents sets of four words or phrases at a time (occasionally more) - and then quizzes you on them before presenting the next set. But then it continues to repeat the previous words, at various intervals, without any variation in the teaching style.
Not only that; the pictures are the same across a lot of different language groups, so they're not culturally relevant. While this isn't an absolute must, I think it's easier to internalize the word for "girl" if the matching picture includes some aspect of the culture. For example: When I'm studying French and see a photo of a Chinese girl, it's not helpful, really... if anything, it's a distraction.
I highly recommend the Pimsleur audio courses in all languages. They're expensive to buy, but if you live in a city, they're probably available at your local library. I'd also say the Transparent Language software is a viable (and more fun) alternative and it's a lot cheaper. Eurotalk also offers video courses, some of which are fairly challenging. And if your computer is tolerant of older software, you might try Learn to Speak Spanish by the Learning Company (re-released by eLearning - I think). The Rocket language courses online aren't bad, either. But I think the myth should be dispelled that Rosetta Stone is some magical approach to learning languages, because it's not even as good as some courses which are significantly cheaper as well.
Buena suerte!

Norton Internet Security 2001 3.0 Family Edition Review

Norton Internet Security 2001 3.0 Family Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using Norton Internet Security for two years now and I am very happy with it. The installation was pretty painless, and the configuration is fairly simple. If you want you can just select "High-Medium-Low" type settings or you can go into the advanced sections and tweak the firewall to your hearts content.
The reason I selected this over other firewall products are the extras: ad blocking, a few more privacy features, and anti-virus protection. The ad-blocking speeds up my Internet connection because I don't have to download all those adds and pop up windows. Privacy settings keep web sites from tracking my page jumps, and it lets me manage who I will accept cookies from (though the cookie management is a little clunky). Bundling the anti-virus saves me the trouble of buying one separately.
Unlike some Norton products I've owned in the past, I haven't had any software conflicts, and the auto-update utility works seamlessly. If you have a DSL or Cable Modem, and you don't have a firewall installed, you are crazy. I get security alerts every month or so letting me know about a Trojan Horse or some other attempt to mess with my PC. Norton blocks the attacks, pops up a warning, and logs the IP address of the attacker, which I usually pass on to my ISP. I've also logged onto security sites that will run port scans on your system and look for security holes and Norton has passed every time.

Norton Personal Firewall defends your PC against hackers by blocking unauthorized connections and alerting you to attempted intrusions. Enhanced Intrusion Protection with AutoBlock can even automatically stop systems that are trying to probe your PC. Norton Privacy Control lets you prevent Web sites from retrieving your e-mail address, control which sites track your activities with cookies, and protect your family from sending confidential information to unsecured Web sites. Automatic LiveUpdate technology keeps the software up to date by checking for new virus definitions when you're online and downloading them in the background. MetaFrame 1.8 Feature Release 1 with Subscription Review

MetaFrame 1.8 Feature Release 1 with Subscription
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Much better the Winframe. Although be very careful to check the software compatability list.

Click Here to see more reviews about: MetaFrame 1.8 Feature Release 1 with Subscription

MetaFrame 1.8 Feature Release 1 further extends the reach of Windows 2000 and Terminal Server Edition servers, with a satisfying user experience, improved performance, and stronger security through encryption and authentication. It not only adds important usability, performance, and security capabilities to MetaFrame 1.8, but also marks the debut of a new, modular approach to Citrix product delivery. In response to the needs of customers and partners, Citrix has improved the flexibility of product releases by coordinating frequent feature updates (Feature Releases) and less-frequent architectural updates (Platform Releases). This approach will allow users and partners to gain added value from Citrix products on a regular basis.
Feature Release 1 adds capabilities in the areas of performance, usability, and security.
Performance:
SpeedScreen 3 enhances user experience with consistent performance regardless of network connection by reducing latency and improving the feel of the application. SpeedScreen 3 technology enables users on restricted bandwidth connections to receive an instant response to typed data while the actual transmission to/from the server is completed.
With TCP-based ICA browsing, ICA clients can discover published applications without relying on UDP broadcasts. Using the standard TCP protocol makes it easier for data to traverse firewalls, enabling users--especially ASP customers--to access protected servers.
Web-based ICA Client Install allows administrators to install and update ICA clients from a central Web server. If a user does not have anICA Client, the Web-based ICA Client feature identifies the platform a user is on, and offers the opportunity to automatically download the appropriate client. Instead of having to touch every desktop throughout the organization, administrators save time and money by remotely installing ICA clients, thus extending MetaFrame's single-point management capabilities.
Usability:
MetaFrame 1.8 Feature Release 1 provides support for high-color(65,000) and true-color (16 million) sessions. Users enjoy enhanced,PC-like color quality, even on thin-client devices. This feature is fully configurable by the administrator.
With multimonitor support, applications can span multiple monitors within a single session.
When a user must end a session in the middle of a project, it can take time to determine the previous position. The Application Save Position eliminates the hunt for the previous end point by enabling the ICA client to open the application at the position and size where the session terminated. During the next session, the client will open the application with the previously stored size and position values.
Security:
128-bit encryption makes the security capabilities of SecureICA an intrinsic part of MetaFrame. SecureICA protects data being sent over the network with a very high level of encryption. The use of 128-bit encryption creates a formidable barrier against unauthorized users attempting to interpret MetaFrame transmissions. SecureICA works with existing networks, including the Internet, RAS, and direct asynchronous ICA connections.
With Pass-Through Authentication, the need for multiple system and application authentication is eliminated, by passing the user's password to the server, giving the customer a seamless connection between local and remote connections for time saving and greater productivity.

PC Maclan 8.1 Review

If you want to use a Windows system in an already functioning Macintosh network, this software is an extremely convenient tool. I've been a long time Mac only user at home, but recently bought a Sony vaio notebook with Windows 2000 Professional pre-installed. I tested this product and Thursby Software's TSSTalk. With PC MacLan, I could do everything I wanted to do, including to see and use all the Mac file structure that contains Japanese file names and to print directly to my Apple LaserWriter Pro 600, which only has local talk interface. With TSSTalk, double byte file names are garbled even though both the Mac 0S 9 English and the Win2k English are set to be Japanese capable. Also, with TSSTalk, the AppleTalk printers are not visible from the Win2k system, and thus not usable at all, and it still has some other small bugs in the Win2k version. All things considered, PC MacLan is head and shoulders above the competition.

VMWARE WORKSTATION 4.X Upgrade for Windows Review

VMWARE WORKSTATION 4.X Upgrade for Windows
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent product if you want to make the most out of your good hardware box and not spending for an extra hardware. Suppose you have enough memory to utilize for an extra OS, enough disk space and plenty of NIC bandwidth (that we usually have), why not run an application in another virtual OS on top of the first one. Mind that, the physical connection of NIC is 1 per physical card so you need to put the virtual hosts/servers within the same VLAN or subnet. The security is also good, it just treats the virtual machine as another machine on the same network.
Portability of the defined virtual hosts from one box to another is another good thing, you just to need to copy the iamge file(s).
I tried to run Solaris 10 for x86 on it, no luck, I dont think they claim it does support either, so pretty clear, anyways Solaris 10 has zoning feature that you can use.
Overall good product for development and testbeds but I do not recommend for production environments.

We have been using Lantastic since it came out and I had to link two computers together for the first time in our start up business. Lantastic has allowed me to slowly add faster and faster computers and relegate the older ones down the line with out interrupting the business or killing the cash flow. Older computers with older operating systems work flawlessly on the LAN. We have not found a software package that didn't run, but found that the software companies do not test for compatibility AND "don't support it" however it works just the same. We have missed the Virus problems by virtue of not using a "main stream" system. I am satisfied, greatful and pray for their continuing success.

If you buy this product and you have a problem, you need to understand that YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN.
Repeated attempts to contact customer service and tech support were unsuccessful. My wife was on the phone for forty-five minutes. I was on the phone for over an hour. Repeated email contacts were ignored. I even engaged a local media outlet to help. One of the local radio stations has a host who has a computer news show. They ignored him too.
What was the problem? After the first installation, we couldn't attach to their server to update the definitions. (Yes, we had an active Internet connection). How do you like that. The software is out of date from the first use and you can't do anything about it.
Finally, I gave up and bought one of their competitor's products. You should too.
