MCTS 70-640 Exam Cram: Windows Server 2008 Active Directory, Configuring Review

MCTS 70-640 Exam Cram: Windows Server 2008 Active Directory, Configuring
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This a very good book to prep for the exam. I'm surprised that there aren't more reviews for this book. This is one of the better IT books that I've read. If you have MCSA/MCSE-level knowledge of AD 2000 or 2003, this book is the only book that you'll need to prep for the exam. I'm talking about knowledge in actually designing and configuring AD, DNS, GPOs, and security; not simply managing AD. AD itself has not changed very much from 2000 to 2008.
The book does a great job of covering pretty much all the exam objectives in an easy to read manner. The only annoying thing about the book was that it put all the references at the end of the book in an appendix instead of at the end of each relevant chapter. I can see how that is a matter of preference, so other readers might like that. But overall, one couldn't ask for a better exam prep book.
I'm not sure what the other reviewer meant about some of the terms used in the book not matching up with MS terminology. I didn't run into this inconsistency at all. I also took the MeasureUp exam included on the CD and the terminology seemed to match. BTW, the MeasureUp exam is very easy to use and was pretty tough (it looks like you only get one 50 question exam on the CD, but can pay for the full version to get more). For the Exchange exam that I took last month, I actually bought a full Transcender exam and that was terrible. The Transcender interface looks like it hasn't changed in 15 years and for a paid product, I found a few errors. Anyway, I think if you really want to purchase a practice exam, use Measure Up (MS actually has them listed on the preparation materials section of the exam site).
The exam number is now 083-640 for English only. I had no indication that the exam number was renamed, and Prometric's site didn't have anything to alert me of this. So now I know why I couldn't select English as the language for 070-640. Duh!
Anyway, half of the exam consisted of two labs using fully functional VMs to do eight tasks each. I then had thirty regular questions for the rest of the exam. The lab caught me off guard because I didn't prepare for it, but it was actually easier than the questions after I got over the initial shock. The lab used real VMs, so you could actually go to the help system to find answers to the questions or browse the file system to look for a certain file name for a command or file if you couldn't remember the full name. I don't know if they deduct points if you use the help system. I'm not even sure how they grade the lab since I didn't get a breakdown of the scores for each section, but overall I got 916/1000, so I think the labs helped me a lot.
You definitely need hands-on skills and practice, not that you couldn't get by with some of the ridiculously easy lab tasks such as changing a group scope from global to universal. The keys to passing this exam are the following:
1.) Previous design and configuration experience with either AD 2000 or 2003. Can you set up AD from scratch and configure a child domain and DNS?
2.) Read all the chapters in this book and take the MeasureUp exam on the CD. I didn't take the big exam at the end of the book, but I did take each end-of-chapter exam.
3.) Set up a lab. I used Hyper-V and had 1 root domain with 2 DCs and one child domain with 1 DC. I also had 1 XP VM. I also installed a stand-alone CA on one of the DCs.
4.) Some supplemental materials on AD FS and possibly CA if you haven't worked with either before (which I think many sys admins haven't since these aren't the most common roles in use). You can just read a few short articles on MS on these topics--I don't think you'll need to go in depth and start reading white papers.
5.) Give yourself about a month to read the book and practice on your lab. I could have taken the exam in a month but I got real busy at work and then had an issue with scheduling with Prometric (BTW, this is one of the worst commercial Web sites. I consistently got the "Web site is down" messages on several occasions and navigating through to find a test center was not the most user friendly). Anyway, it ended up taking me 6 weeks from the start of reading this book to taking the exam, but I was pretty much ready in 4 weeks.

Mike Meyers' CISSP(R) Certification Passport Review

Mike Meyers' CISSP(R) Certification Passport
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The CISSP strikes terror for some, since it is not an easy exam to prepare for. I picked up this book because of its portability (I travel so I need something light to carry around), not expecting anything substantial to be inside, only pointers to help me remember some of the material I have already covered. Instead, I found this book to be a gem, a book full of concise material written in style that is uncluttered, presented in a format that is structured. Plus, the book offers online questions for practice. Besides the occasional typo or two, the only fault I can criticize about the book is its Q&A section--it seemed a little too simple for a professional exam.
Overall, I would recommend this book as a good first book to use, to quickly gain as much grasp of the security concepts in as little time as possible, and then slowly graduate to the more substantial offerings from QUE or Wiley.

MCITP Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-646): Windows Server Administration Review

MCITP Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-646): Windows Server Administration
Average Reviews:

This edition is useless for the new 70-646 exam. Microsoft Training and Certification has already stated that the second edition with the new content is due out July of 2011; although, they are currently testing using the 2008R2 content. Do not waste your money. I've tested twice using this self study including a completely different set of questions from MeasureUp and have failed the test twice. I have scored average 95% for ten certification modes on this book and the MeasureUp tests.

CompTIA Network+ Certification Kit: (Exam: N10-004) Review

CompTIA Network+ Certification Kit: (Exam: N10-004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As others have said before me, Todd Lammle's book gives you everything you need to pass the N10-004 exam, while giving you knowledge outside of the exam, which could surely come in handy in the professional world. I really like his style of writing, which was humorous at times, and explained things in an easy to understand manner. The chapter on subnetting was especially well done. I've read some other explanations of how to subnet, and his was by far the best. I also read Bill Ferguson's book, which really cemented the knowledge I needed to know for the exam. There were also some parts where I felt Bill did a better job of explaining things, like on the structure of MAC addresses. After I read Mr Furguson's book, I went back and reread Lammle's and was finally able to understand what he was he was trying to say. I haven't got into the street smarts book yet, but I intend to when I buy routers and switches to study for the CCNA cert. If you buy this book, and you take the time to learn it thoroughly you will definitely pass. I got a score of 829.

CCENT Exam Cram (exam 640-822) Review

CCENT Exam Cram (exam 640-822)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was able to "fill in the blanks" left by other training materials (videos) with this book. As usual, the Exam Cram series hits everything you NEED to know for the test without going over hundreds of pages of minutia and drivel you may or may not see on the test.
Memorizing a 500+ page MS press or Cisco press book has its merits yes... but when you rarely if ever use that entire batch of knowledge in real life scenarios and it's impossible for it to ALL be on the test, my feeling is learn what you need, pass the test, and keep doing a great job in the REAL WORLD on whatever projects and support tasks your employer assigns you.
This is a 5-star rating because I passed the test after only 8 hours spent doing the practices tests and exams at the end of the chapters and the end of the book, reading the book cover to cover, and then doing the practice tests again. And I'm a bit slow at reading comprehension so your results will vary and will most likely be better than mine :)
Thank you for reading this review and hopefully it positively influences your decision whether or not to purchase this book as you pursue your CCENT certification.

CCNA Security Official Exam Certification Guide (Exam 640-553) Review

CCNA Security Official Exam Certification Guide (Exam 640-553)
Average Reviews:

DON'T BUY! ABSOLUTELY WORTHLESS FOR THE EXAM. This book should be billed as a primer only. It contains good introductory-level information but was nowhere near the level of depth of information required on the actual exam. The cover says it has "realistic exam questions." Not so. I passed all practice exams with ease, but on the actual exam, the level of granularity on the questions was much more in-depth than anything covered in the book. This book in no way, shape, or form prepares you for the exam. Like I said, good as an intro to the subject but definitely NOT good for exam preparation. Sorry to disappoint, but either they changed the exam to make it harder, or whoever advertised the book over-reached on their claims for how the book would prepare you. In any case, if it ever was good, it is NOT good for this exam any longer. DON'T BUY!

MCTS 70-620 Microsoft Windows Vista: Configuring Practice Questions Exam Cram Review

MCTS 70-620 Microsoft Windows Vista: Configuring Practice Questions Exam Cram
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked this book up to supplement the MS Training guide for this exam. I've been very happy with the Exam Cram series in the past however this one falls short in one specific area - accuracy. Many of the answers contradict what is in the MS Training guide, are flat out wrong, or even contradict themselves. For example, Chapter 5, Question 67 (Windows Fax), the explanation in the answer key contradicts the answer given. There are several other instances like this which should have been caught during editing (Question ID 1.4-3, 3.3-54, 1.1-25, etc.). After reading through this book and taking several practice exams from CD(which use the exact same questions) I was left with less confidence than if I had simply stayed with the MS Press book. I suppose one benefit is that I was forced to do more research when I read something that didn't seem right, which probably helped me pass the exam.
