Cisco CVPNCLIENTK9 VPN Client Software Review

Cisco CVPNCLIENTK9 VPN Client Software
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought the software to use with an 851 router. The router software was so ridiculously buggy, I never even bothered to open or install the VPN client software. Just returned the router (for a full and complete refund - thank you Amazon).
However, the VPN client return was completely rejected by the vendor Galactics, since it didn't have the original (non-Cisco) box. The CD was never removed from the sleeve, and the protection label never disturbed, so it should have at the worst received a restocking fee. Will never do business with Galactics again.

CCNP Virtual Lab Review

CCNP Virtual Lab
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I successfully used the CCNA virtual lab to help me pass the CCNA qualification, and I have also used microcontroller simulators for debugging code, so I am not entirely new to simulators. The CCNA one had some problems, but nothing really bad, and helped me a lot. Unfortunately the CCNP simulator is worse, not better. I should emphasise that I have downloaded the patch, and keep checking the errata page but I am still finding, reporting, and getting no furthur feedback on additional problems. Now, it is certainly possible to cause your own problems here, but when you find that for instance you cannot ping devices that are supposed to be directly connected, and you get a message about SPID's from the net detective, you know there is something odd going on. (It is trying to use a nonconfigured isdn interface instead of the serial line that is configured by the lab given.) It needs first to be improved to where the labs as written actually work, then it needs a bit of attention to letting you perform diagnostics using the standard cisco commands so that when you do make a typo in a config, you have some reasonable chance of finding it. (Which is also excellent practice for the support part of things...) As it is, when you strike a bug and start trying to troubleshoot, then report what you have done to support, they come back at you that you are only supposed to do the things given in the labs. (let me quote the box: "Extensive free form configuration options" "design custom labs that focus on your special interests")
So this is a product with a great deal of potential, mostly not realised yet. I really couldn't advise anyone to buy it in the current state. I'd be happy to discuss this via email with anyone, especially the developers so do the obvious to this (disposable!) address ibxbksf001(AT)sneakemail.com to get hold of me. I will also happily withdraw or modify this review as necessary should I receive any furthur information from support.

CCNA Router and Switch eSIM Review

CCNA Router and Switch eSIM

Having trouble passing the CCNA exam? Need to find equipment but can't afford the costs? Want to have several different routers to work with? Think you'll need a new lab? Well Cisco Press may have taken the trouble to help you out more than you know.
With the software there was absolutely no trouble installing and I installed it on Windows 98, NT, 2000 and XP, each worked flawlessly. After the install you need the cd to run which should be changed in future releases.
Once installed you are ready to begin, although you do need to give the host of the console an IP address first and this too needs to be corrected. Seems to work far better that other routers eSIM since is isn't database driven but Flash driven. Giving you every possible help, the commands that are useful are bolded, aiding in the learning process.
There are 3 scenarios, scenario 1 is 5 router and 10 hosts. Although switches are included you can not configure them which I think would be very useful. In scenario 2 you work with switches and VLANS and 2 is intra-Vlan routing. You have several labs for each scenario and you can always make up your own.
The second cd included has over 100 activities and not all relate to CCNA but you'll find them useful for other things related to networking. There is also over 200 flash cards to study from and about the only problem I found is that you have to enter the full command rather than the shorter version.
There is some cleanup needed but you should be able to pass the exam with this one. Now tailor the ICND and CCNA courseware to this eSim and you have a sure fire winner.

CCNA Router and Switch eSIM combines on two CD-ROMs tools that not only provide intermediate- to late-stage hands-on test preparation but also provide help in translating theoretical learning to real-world application. Network simulations, tutorial activities, practice test questions, and other electronic learning tools result in a comprehensive and interactive package for CCNA self-study.

CCNA Router and Switch eSIM begins with the eSIM network simulator. This simulator provides hands-on experience with routers and switches using three network scenarios: five routers, which includes support for access control lists (ACLs); three switches, for trunking and virtual LANs (VLANs); and two switches and one router, for routing between VLANs. Each scenario enables you to specify your own IP addressing schemes, providing you with a dynamic IP addressing environment. The accompanying electronic user manual presents 14 activities for you to work through, but the totally open, freely configurable, simulative environment of the eSIM network simulator allows hours of exploration and experimentation throughout the three network scenarios.

CCNA Router and Switch eSIM is part of a recommended learning path from Cisco Systems that can include simulation and hands-on training from authorized Cisco Learning Partners and self-study products from Cisco Press.Titles in this series provide officially developed exam preparation materials that offer interactive learning, assessment, and networking simulation experience to help Cisco Career Certification candidates learn concepts and understand the application of networking concepts in a real-world setting.

CCNA Virtual Lab, Titanium Edition Review

CCNA Virtual Lab, Titanium Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the CCNA Virtual Lab, Titanium Edition in June of this year and I couldn't be more pleased. I read some of the negative reviews and I felt compelled to respond since the major complaints seem trivial compared to what the software actually does.
The licensing scheme is very straight forward. You have to be connected to the internet when you install the license and after that you don't. If your computer crashes, you can get your license reactivated - no big deal.
The hosts in the program support ping, tracert, and telnet. Not sure you need anything else to pass the CCNA exam.
I'm almost done working through the labs and the program has never crashed. One thing I did notice right away is how easy it is to design the network and connect devices. I like the fact that the devices look like the real devices and not the hockey pucks.
I've worked through the RIP, OSPF, EIGRP, and NAT/PAT labs and learned quite a bit. Another neat thing about the software is the ability to save my network at any point and reload it when I have a chance to work on it.
If you want to study towards your CCNA and get some hands on experience, I recommend purchasing this product.

CCNA for Dummies Review

CCNA for Dummies

Words of caution. Test #640-507 was released in Aug of 2000. This book came out in April of 2000. I found out "AFTER " I read the book, took the test, didn't pass, and searched for new study material. The book cover says that it is for test 640-507 but it misses the mark. I found the book to be generally useful. Lots of good info. Everything was explained clearly. Good book to have on your desk. For test preperation, look for a newer book.

CCNA Virtual Lab, Platinum Edition (640-801) Review

CCNA Virtual Lab, Platinum Edition (640-801)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a Cisco Academy student I bought this with the intent to supplement the lab activities and to do labs when lab time was not available. As another reviewer noted, the first thing it asks is if you want to upgrade. I am finishing the second half of the CCNA 1&2 book and this was a help with some of the early labs. As we got further I noted commands missing and not enough hardware can be set up to do the labs. I found the access-list command not working which blew away any ACL labs and practice. It just isn't worth the money for a serious student. I am upgraging to Router Sims NetVis 4.0 (actually the same engine this one uses, this is a scaled down version that Sybex resells). It has all the Cisco Academy semester 2 labs and looks like it covers all the commands. Appears to be a much more comprehensive simulator for about 80 bucks more. See the comparison at their web page.
This will give you a feel for router configs, but has too many limitations to be more than just a toy. If you are serious about CCNA lab and practice, you will find this lacking very quickly.

Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Certification Guide (3rd Edition) Review

Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Certification Guide (3rd Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wendell Odom has, yet again, created an excellent study guide for the latest CCNA exam.
I teach Cisco courses at a large, Chicago based training center. Since we are not a Cisco authorized training center, we do not have access to the Cisco course materials. I use this book since it is as close as you are going to get to the Cisco course material. No one is going to write a book that compliments the exam material as closely as Cisco Press. As an instructor, I appreciate the depth in which the material is covered. This book does not cover exactly what is required for the exam. It covers significantly more. Given the competitive nature of the industry today, enough is not enough. You can't enter this industry and be average if you want to succeed. In the past, I have used the Sybex material for our training courses. Regularly, I had students that learned enough from the book to have questions the book didn't answer. The one complaint I have about this book is the speed in which the material gets deep. There is little ramp up time for a newbie to the material. If you are brand new to the IT industry and Cisco, you may want to start with a more watered down book, such as the Sybex 607 book and graduate to this book for additional detail.
This book has an excellent assortment of charts, graphs and pictures for the visual learner. Read, see and do are all required parts of the learning process. I find I learn best when I read about a concept, refer to a diagram to solidify the detail, and then, if possible, do it.
Lastly, the CD that comes with the book is excellent. In the past, Cisco's CCNA CDs have been mediocre at best. The new CD has the complete book in PDF format and a separate "topic focused" study guide for the last step of exam preparation. The practice exams on the CD are as close as you will come to the real thing (without paying).
If you want to learn about Cisco, understand their products and get your CCNA certification. Stop here. You have found your book.

Although it's the first step in the Cisco Career Certifications, the CCNA exam is a difficult test. The recent additions of performance-based questions have made it even more challenging. Your first attempt at becoming Cisco certified requires a lot of study and confidence in your networking knowledge. When you're ready to test your skills, complete your knowledge of exam topics, and prepare for exam day, you need the preparation tools found in Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Certification Guide from Cisco Press.

Completely revised by CCIE(r) and certified Cisco Systems instructor Wendell Odom, Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Certification Guide is a comprehensive study tool for the CCNA exam. Updated with new content and features to make it easier to read and reference, this book helps you understand and master the material you will need to know to pass the exam. The instructor-developed elements and techniques enable you to maximize your retention of exam topics. "Do I Know This Already?" quizzes open each chapter and allow you to decide how much time you need to spend on each section. Exam topic lists and Foundation Summary tables and figures make referencing easy and give you a quick refresher whenever you need it. Challenging chapter-ending review questions and scenario exercises help you assess your knowledge and reinforce key concepts.

This edition of the book includes special features in both the text and CD-ROM to help you prepare for the new simulation-based questions you will encounter on the exam. These new simulation-based questions are designed to test your hands-on skills. A chapter of lab scenarios allows you to practice applying your knowledge on home-, work, or remote access-based labs. In addition to these exercises, the robust exam engine on the CD-ROM includes the new question types so that you can assess your ability to handle this new challenge. The CD-ROM's test engine includes powerful features that enable you to take practice exams that mimic the real testing environment, focus on particular topic areas, track your progress, and refer to electronic text to review concepts.

CCIE Routing and Switching Official Exam Certification Guide (2nd Edition) Review

CCIE Routing and Switching Official Exam Certification Guide (2nd Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used the "CCIE Routing and Switching - Official Exam Certification Guide, Second Edition", by Wendell Odom, Jim Geier and Naren Mehta. ISBN: 1587201410 as part of my preparation the CCIE Routing and Switching exam. This book provides an excellent high-level overview of the topics covered in the CCIE Written blueprint. However, be aware that it is in fact an abbreviated overview of each subject.
This book is well organized, contains an excellent glossary and index, and provides quick summaries of each subject. On many of the topics, the authors provide some excellent insight and unique presentation methods. For example, the mnemonic for the BGP decision process was tremendously helpful. Also, I like the included CD-ROM which provides the entire book in PDF format and an excellent test engine.
I did not like the deviation from the standard Cisco Press format in the Foundation Summary section. In multiple instances I felt the new information presented in the Foundation Summary section would have been much more appropriately placed in the chapter. Additionally, I prefer the more specific detailed questions typically found in the Foundation Summary rather than using the practice exam for chapter review. Additionally, I felt some of the topics were discussed so quickly and at such a basic level that it was as if the authors were just short of saying yadda-yadda-yadda.
I used this book in conjunction with "Routing TCP/IP - Volume I" and "Routing TCP/IP - Volume II" and Cisco's website. Typically, I would read the explanation in the "CCIE Routing and Switching - Official Exam Certification Guide" and if clearly understood everything in that section and was able to add more detailed information, I would move on to the next subject. Otherwise, I would go back and re-read the subject as presented in the Routing TCP/IP book and as presented on Cisco's website.
All in all, "CCIE Routing and Switching - Official Exam Certification Guide does a good job of covering the topics outlined in the CCIE Routing and Switching blueprint. Some topics are cover in more detail (or clear explanations) than others, but overall they are covered mostly at the fundamental level. This book alone does not cover every thing you need to know, but it does do an excellent job of facilitating a thorough review of subject that you must know in order to pass the written exam.

Cisco CCNA Network Simulator (CCNA Self-Study, 640-801) Review

Cisco CCNA Network Simulator (CCNA Self-Study, 640-801)
Average Reviews:

I read the other reviews on Amazon before purchasing this product. I saw some were good and some were bad. I thought, well, people have different opinions and I may like it. No. There are too many mistakes. Others have commented on VLAN issues with the 2950's. I had the same problem. Any more than 3 vlans and it just wouldn't work. It was very frustrating in that I wasted ALOT of time thinking it my configs at first. Then there is some kind of bug with pings. When you ping from one specific PC to another across your virtual network the entire application shuts down. This will consistently happen so you must remember which PC's you can and can't ping to and from safely and make sure to save everything before every ping. You will put in configurations then 5 minutes later do a "sh run" and they will mysteriously be gone. Or take a network statement out from under OSPF but it just will NOT remove it. Lastly there is the user friendly-ness. I rate this as a zero. It is the most cumbersome application I have ever used. It would have helped had I been able to open the user guide but that did nothing when I clicked on it. I lost many a network because I didn't save the topologies and configs correctly. So I called Boson for help. You have to leave your name and number and they will call back within 48 hours. That was 2 weeks ago. I have not heard from them.

There's no reason to beat around the bush: This is not an objective history of Cisco. It is an unabashedly adulatory look at one of the most influential companies of the New Economy. If you're looking for a critical assessment of Cisco's business model and execution, look elsewhere. That does not mean that you should ignore Inside Cisco, however. On the contrary, we from getAbstract strongly recommend this book for its detailed dissection of Cisco's acquisition methodology, from its target identification and selection to integration and employee retention. Anyone in business would do well to read this book, study these processes and make them their own.

Very Good Book. If you didn't know already the CCNA exam is no Joke. You really have to know the concepts and you really need a good book to prepare for it. Cisco is not giving the CCNA Certificate away anymore. They really want you to learn and earn it. I purchase this because I felt the sybex CCNA didn't cover the exam in full detail (Especially the NAT section). This Book is Well Written. The Price wasn't that bad either since it came with 2 Books (Intro&ICND) and a 30min Video CD. You won't be disappointed. A+

LAN Switch Security: What Hackers Know About Your Switches Review

LAN Switch Security: What Hackers Know About Your Switches
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I really looked forward to reading LAN Switch Security (LSS), simply because it covered layer 2 issues. These days application security, rootkits, and similar topics get all the press, but the foundation of the network is still critical. Unfortunately, LSS disappointed me enough to warrant this three star review. I'm afraid those before me who wrote five star reviews 1) don't read enough other books or 2) don't set their expectations high enough.
Let me first say I am not anti-Cisco, nor anti-Cisco-book. For an earlier Cisco Press book I wrote "I really enjoyed reading Cisco Router Firewall Security (CRFS) by Richard Deal. This book delivers just what a technical Cisco book should: discussion of concepts, explanation of command syntax, and practical examples." LSS, however, is not what I like to see in a Cisco book. It suffers the major flaw found in almost all technical books featuring large numbers of writers (LSS has 2 authors, 4 contributors, 2 tech editors): incoherence and overlapping discussions. Furthermore, many of these contributors do not write clearly. I found large sections to be disjointed and inconsistent. It is clear that no one stepped up to the plate to see if the finished product made any sense from the reader's perspective.
The second major problem with this book is that older books easily overpower LSS. For example, in March 2006 I gave Hacking Exposed: Cisco Networks (HECN) four stars. HECN covers many of the same topics as LSS, more clearly, with more syntax, and better explanations. Anyone who wants to buy a book about layer 2 security should start with HECN. If you don't want to buy a book, just download the free 86-page Cisco IOS Switch Security Configuration Guide published by NSA.
If you read HECN or the NSA guide, you'll be struck by the amount of configuration syntax in those resources. If you glance through LSS you'll see syntax, but (and this bothered me greatly) not for all the features discussed. For example, LSS ch 16 (Wire Speed Access Control Lists) features sections titled "Working with RACL", "Working with VACL", and "Working with PACL". That's great -- six pages (pp 263-268), with no command syntax! Sure, you can read about using VACLs for traffic capture, but where are the examples? If you tell me they are the same as other examples, I want to see the proof. This is the sort of glaring omission that really frustrated me.
I did like some of LSS. I thought attacks against link aggregation protocols, discussions of control plane policy, and spanning tree protocol were interesting. Adding discussions of ARP spoofing a remote gateway using Yersinia would have been helpful. There's a decent number of typos (POP != "point of presence", replace "Ethernet" with "IP" on p 235), but technically the book seemed sound. (One of the authors was kind enough to confirm the p 235 typo; I wanted to be sure I hadn't missed something important.)
I notice Cisco is publishing a book titled Router Security Strategies: Securing IP Network Traffic Planes in December. Presumably that will be a counterpart to this title, except at layer 3. I hope that new book avoids the mistakes made by LSS.

LAN Switch Security: What Hackers Know About Your SwitchesA practical guide to hardening Layer 2 devices and stopping campus network attacksEric VynckeChristopher Paggen, CCIE® No. 2659Contrary to popular belief, Ethernet switches are not inherently secure. Security vulnerabilities in Ethernet switches are multiple: from the switch implementation, to control plane protocols (Spanning Tree Protocol [STP], Cisco® Discovery Protocol [CDP], and so on) and data plane protocols, such as Address Routing Protocol (ARP) or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). LAN Switch Security explains all the vulnerabilities in a network infrastructure related to Ethernet switches. Further, this book shows you how to configure a switch to prevent or to mitigate attacks based on those vulnerabilities. This book also includes a section on how to use an Ethernet switch to increase the security of a network and prevent future attacks.Divided into four parts, LAN Switch Security provides you with steps you can take to ensure the integrity of both voice and data traffic traveling over Layer 2 devices. Part I covers vulnerabilities in Layer 2 protocols and how to configure switches to prevent attacks against those vulnerabilities. Part II addresses denial-of-service (DoS) attacks on an Ethernet switch and shows how those attacks can be mitigated. Part III shows how a switch can actually augment the security of a network through the utilization of wirespeed access control list (ACL) processing and IEEE 802.1x for user authentication and authorization. Part IV examines future developments from the LinkSec working group at the IEEE. For all parts, most of the content is vendor independent and is useful for all network architects deploying Ethernet switches. After reading this book, you will have an in-depth understanding of LAN security and be prepared to plug the security holes that exist in a great number of campus networks. Cisco ISP Essentials (Cisco Press Networking Technology) Review

Cisco ISP Essentials (Cisco Press Networking Technology)
Average Reviews:

This book is based on a living document that Philip, Barry and many network engineers around the globe have been working on for quite a few years. Since I do work with the original document I feared that it might only be a printed version of the online document, but I was delighted to discover that this is not the case, the book really is an expanded and up to date version of the recommended best practices based on real work network engineering experience.
The book is well written (typos and a few mistakes here and there) but the essence, the meat of it all are the detailed Cisco related commands and the usefull information that is provided. Saves a lot of time versus searching mailing lists, Cisco's web site and other ressources.

CCNP ROUTE 642-902 Official Certification Guide (Exam Certification Guide) Review

CCNP ROUTE 642-902 Official Certification Guide (Exam Certification Guide)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is a lot of great info in this book. However, so far I've only seriously studied up to Ch 5 and I've seen a lot of typos, many of which affect the understanding you might gain from reading that certain section. Myself and a co-worker have come across multiple mislabeled diagrams and examples, and contradicting statements. It can be quite frustrating to study with this book. The last thing I came across that prompted me to finally write this review was a "Do I know this already?" quiz question that blatantly tells you to choose two answers on a multiple choice, only to flip to the back of the book to the answers section and find only one option as the answer! I actually think its not referring to the same question! These are small things, but they add up, and are very annoying. I have found many more errors in this book, but I won't go into them all. The errors I have found so far only make me wonder how many I didn't notice, or didn't know enough about to know that they were wrong, which could potentially be a lot since I'm trying to learn a good portion of this material for the first time! I am convinced that this book might have been briefly reviewed, but not very well, technically speaking, and not to the detail level I would expect from a "Certification Guide" published by the company issuing the certification.
In closing, I think this book has a lot of great information in it, and Wendell Odom does a great job of explaining things. I just wish it wasn't littered with errors, and that is why I only give it 3 stars.

Performance and Fault Management (Cisco Press Core Series) Review

Performance and Fault Management (Cisco Press Core Series)
Average Reviews:

I like the book for the following reasons and many more: -covers both routers & switches -covers the show commands as well as the equivalent SNMP objects -tells me the inside information (e.g.) Which ver of IOS started supporting sub-interfaces, IOS hidden commands -tells me how I can leverage applications like HpOV NNM, MRTG etc
And it tells all this and more in a simple language (e.g.) The chapter on monitoring CPU & Memory resources explains lucidly how one can be proactive about monitoring these 2 key elements.
The chapter on VLAN management is another good example. One of the topics it covers is about monitoring spanning tree topology changes, how you can use community string indexing to get vlan information for each individual vlan

MPLS Fundamentals Review

MPLS Fundamentals
Average Reviews:

This is a fairly exhaustive book on cisco MPLS implementation. The name "MPLS Fundamentals" gives an idea that this is a good place to start with, ut unfortunately not. It starts at a basic level, but in no time dives in deep. Use this book only if you want to understand specific areas in depth and not for an overview. Also, if you have access to your own lab, you will find it much easier to follow along.
