OpenView Network Node Manager: Designing and Implementing an Enterprise Solution Review

OpenView Network Node Manager: Designing and Implementing an Enterprise Solution
Average Reviews:

This book provides a very good framework for "planning, implementing, and maintaining NNM" (quoted from the preface). The preface admits it is not a training manual, and the author himself recommends attending a training class before using this book. Therefore, the book was not really what I was looking for. It provides an excellent overview of how one would go about setting things up, but does not provide very many specific examples of how to do this. It's aim is more at the Network Manager instead of the ones actually doing the implementation. Since I have more of a development mindset, I found the lack of specific examples frustrating. There were many stories about how NNM had been set up in the author's extensive experience with the product, but not very many step by step procedures of how he did this. If you're looking for a technical manual, you might be disappointed.

Well Connected: An Unconventional Approach to Building Genuine, Effective Business Relationships Review

Well Connected: An Unconventional Approach to Building Genuine, Effective Business Relationships
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an extraordinary book that presents a completely new approach to developing and using business relationships in a dramatically more effective way. I've been a client of the author and familiar with his approach, but I still found the book to be a fantastic and enlightening read.
The book presents a kind of a "unified field theory" in which the author explains why typical networking usually doesn't work and often erodes business relationships, all as a predicate to offering a values-based approach that shows respect to one's current and prospective colleagues and allows networkers of different personality types, including shy people like me, to play to their strengths in a much more natural way. Having made the case for pursuing business relationships based on mutual advantage and clear strategic objectives, he then presents a step-by-step framework with cogent illustrations that bring his new way of seeing things to life.
The author has a much more realistic and mature understanding of the challenges we all face when engaging in such complex activities as looking for a job, clients, funding, or vendors than any of the many books I've read on the subject. His advice is particularly astute for experienced workers with significant accomplishments under their belt, but who face intense competition at higher levels of career advancement. There are no cliches or fads or silver bullets in this book, just an exceptionally thoughtful and original approach to a set of problems we all face and a lively and realistic roadmap for making it your own.

Achieve your goals by selectively engaging the right people and connecting well with them
Smart executives who want to reach virtually any business goal-from raising capital to finding sales leads to finding the perfect job-know that networking is the key to their success. But traditional networking approaches-meet as many people as possible, amass huge numbers of "connections" and "friends" in your LinkedIn and Facebook networks-rarely produce more than a handful of relationships that pay off. In Well-Connected, networking maven and coach Gordon Curtis explains that the secret to building truly effective relationships is to narrow--rather than widen--your network. His proven methodology for building key relationships that deliver results every time emphasizes selectively engaging the right people and connecting with them well : First, identify a "critical enabler," someone who has access to the knowledge you need and is inclined to help you; second, unlock the critical enabler's willingness and ability to provide what you need by offering her something valuable before you ask her or him for anything.
Well-Connected reveals a breakthrough approach to networking that delivers predictable, positive results
Filled with success stories, the book provides an accessible action plan for all readers
Networking maven Gordon Curtis has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Sunday Globe, Fast Company Magazine

Well-Connected serves as the playbook for sophisticated business people who know there's a better way to connect with the right people to get things done better and faster.

Web-Based Human Resources
Average Reviews:

Editor Alfred J. Walker briefly introduces the new Web-based technologies that are enabling human resource (HR) managers to operate more effectively. He then offers a series of 17 articles by different authors covering these new approaches. The topics covered include Web-based employee self-service, delivering employee benefits over the Web, creating an HR service center, outsourcing and using the Web for a variety of services, including recruiting, staffing, compensation planning, employee development and knowledge management. This specialized book will primarily interest HR professionals, top executives and information technology professionals involved in setting up HR information systems. Since HR professionals are attuned to human failings, we [...] trust they will forgive the book's occasional information overlaps - hard to avoid with a collection of articles by different authors - and frequently return to this solid and specifically useful book.

Best Practices in Building Your Personal Network for Attorneys Review

Best Practices in Building Your Personal Network for Attorneys

I am considering purchasing an industrial-strength wood chipper just for the pleasure of feeding this book through its whirling blades.
I suppose that it's my own fault; I broke one of my cardinal rules, which is never to buy a book written by somebody who owns a consulting business. Like most consultant-written books, this book reads more like a resume booster rather than a serious attempt to impart information.
The advice imparted in this book isn't wrong--it's just so obvious that nobody should pay for it. It includes all of the familiar chestnuts such as writing articles, public speaking, and networking. It's the same warmed-over advice you can get anywhere for free.
There is, in fact, very little practical advice presented. Most of the book is repetitive motivational rah-rah speak. You know the type--chock full of things like "programs", "models", "matrixes", and "paradigms". "It's not just a book!!! It's a complete marketing system!!!" Trust me, it's just a book.
The book, itself, is physically painful to read. For instance, on page 53 (selected at random) we are treated to at least two different fonts, ALL CAPS, boldface, italics, boldfaced italics, boldfaced ALL CAPS, and italicized ALL CAPS. I was seasick by the end of the page. The book should be stamped with a Surgeon General's warning--Contents May Cause Nausea.

Shaped By God's Heart: The Passion and Practices of Missional Churches Review

Shaped By God's Heart: The Passion and Practices of Missional Churches
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One of the criticisms most often levied against the larger body of Missional Church writing (i.e. the GOCN series) is that the writers fail to give "concrete" examples of what a missional church "looks like." Minatrea has attempted to fill that void.
There are some legitimate problems with his effort. Nowhere does he explain his research methodology, so one must assume that his research was primarily personal interviews with pastors and church leaders. Neither does he explain the criteria used to identify the churches included in the research as "missional".
Some of his argumentation is convoluted. One example is when he asserts (I'm paraphrasing) that missional churches don't get bogged down in theological matters that distract from mission. Then, a few pages later in the same chapter, he argues that missional churches will have clearly defined doctrinal statements. One is left wondering, "Which is it?"
Also, in several places it seems as though he and his subjects are creating a straw man of sorts out of "traditional" churches. And the churches he most often cites as examples--Gracepoint (San Antonio), Ecclesia (Houston), Antioch (Waco, TX), and Mosaic (Los Angeles)--while diverse, are all at least loosely assocaited with evangelical Baptists. He tells us in the introduction that missioanl churches can be anywhere and in any denomination. So one wonders why he didn't find some to include in his book.
So it isn't a perfect effort. But...it DOES fill a void in the body of Missional Church literature. Beyond simply identifying nine commonalities of practice among missional churches, he leaves readers with the impression that their church can be both missional and faithful to its current local context at the same time. He also presents a few suggestions for moving a church towards a missioanl ecclesiology.
As stated, this is not a perfect effort. But in addition to practical considerations, Minatrea proviides an appropriate basic introduction to the Missional conversation for those not already familiar with the names Newbigin, Guder, or Hunsberger.

I used this study guide in preparing for the CWNA certification (which I passed). Prior to getting the CWNA, I had already obtained a few other WLAN certifications and had purchased several other books. I can honestly say that this program and, in particular, this study guide present the most information and in the clearest way. If you want the certification, then you will have to get this book. Even if you just want a good WLAN reference or to learn more about WLANs, this is one of the books that you MUST have. I consider this to be

CWNA: Certified Wireless Network Administrator Study Guide (Exam PW0-100) Review

CWNA: Certified Wireless Network Administrator Study Guide (Exam PW0-100)
Average Reviews:

I'm using this book as reference material in a wireless LAN course I'm teaching at a local college. I started out using the official CWNA study guide but I like this one better and have switched to it for the following reasons:
1. It is more up to date.
2. It has lots fewer typo errors.
3. The CD adds value to the book.
4. I like the end of chapter multiple choice questions (and the answers are in the book).
5. The authors explain concepts in a clear and concise manner.
I wish the authors could have done more with Security. But security is such a complex topic, it really needs a book of its own and one or two chapters in any book is not enough to really cover this topic.
The students like this book and actually like it better than the books selected by the previous instructor. All in all I think it's a great value. If you want to learn the basics of wireless networking, get this book and a wireless access point and wireless adapter card for your computer and go for it.
