CCNA Virtual Lab, Titanium Edition Review

CCNA Virtual Lab, Titanium Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the CCNA Virtual Lab, Titanium Edition in June of this year and I couldn't be more pleased. I read some of the negative reviews and I felt compelled to respond since the major complaints seem trivial compared to what the software actually does.
The licensing scheme is very straight forward. You have to be connected to the internet when you install the license and after that you don't. If your computer crashes, you can get your license reactivated - no big deal.
The hosts in the program support ping, tracert, and telnet. Not sure you need anything else to pass the CCNA exam.
I'm almost done working through the labs and the program has never crashed. One thing I did notice right away is how easy it is to design the network and connect devices. I like the fact that the devices look like the real devices and not the hockey pucks.
I've worked through the RIP, OSPF, EIGRP, and NAT/PAT labs and learned quite a bit. Another neat thing about the software is the ability to save my network at any point and reload it when I have a chance to work on it.
If you want to study towards your CCNA and get some hands on experience, I recommend purchasing this product.

CISA: Certified Information Systems Auditor Study Guide Review

CISA: Certified Information Systems Auditor Study Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, this should not be your only reference. There: got that out of the way.
I recommend this book along with the official questions and answers book and the official questions and answers supplement.
This book does a very good job of covering every topic with which you need to be very familiar in order to pass the test. It covers the practice areas as updated for 2006, which haven't changed for 2007. However, the questions in this book are terrible and do not represent the questions you will be asked on the actual test. Also, there are many editing errors in this book so be on the lookout.
The official questions and answers book and its supplement are essential. The test questions are often misleadingly (or just poorly) worded and correctly answering the multiple choice questions often comes down to almost arbitrarily deciding which one is "most" correct. You will have a hard time on the exam if you haven't subjected yourself to this abuse before hand.
I do not recommend the official study guide. The official study guide is so terrible on so many levels I wished I could throw it at an ISACA official after wasting my time and money on it. The writing is terrible: redundant, dry, and often times of questionable use and technical accuracy. The book itself has terrible typography and pedagogy that make it painful to read. The softcover, oversized dimensions, and spiral binding make it very annoying to carry or store anywhere other than on a flat desktop since it flops around. That it was so obviously cheaply produced and yet costs more than $100 is insulting.
So, in summary: This book is worth your money despite its flaws and will help you pass the CISA exam. Make sure you also buy the official questions and answers book and its supplement. Avoid the official study guide.

CompTIA Security+ Study Guide: Exam SY0-101 Review

CompTIA Security+ Study Guide: Exam SY0-101
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent study guide for the Security+ exam. The sample questions on the CD are almost exactly what is on the real exam, in fact I actually found one question that was identical verbatim to what was on the CD. I think going through the chapter exams and reading on the subjects you miss questions on is the best way to study for the Security+ which is a fairly tough exam. This is the only resource I used and I got an 885/900. You will not be disappointed with this book and especially not with the CD which is worth the price by itself thanks to its excellent sample tests.

CompTIA Security+ Certification Kit: SY0-201 Review

CompTIA Security+ Certification Kit: SY0-201
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I highly recommend this kit to anyone preparing to take the Security+ exam. I did it by reading the entire Security+ Study Guide while testing myself chapter by chapter using the CDs test engine (also included on the CD is the entire book in PDF format which can be quite convenient). Then I moved onto the Fast Pass book which reinforced what I already knew from the previous book. Also included in the Fast Pass book is another CD with a test engine on it (unfortunately no pdf of the book on this one though). That's really all I did. I studied for about 8-10 hours a day for about 11 days and on day 12 took the exam and passed; I'm now a CompTIA Security+ certified IT Professional!

CompTIA A+ Complete Study Guide Review

CompTIA A+ Complete Study Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start off with just one word: Wow. When I was going through my training for A+, I would've loved to have had this book for studying. While I have not read the book cover-to-cover, I have gone through a lot of it and actually found myself being sucked in and reading more and more of it. Throw in the changes for the new A+ exam and I was blown away. The format of the book really works for someone getting a foot in the IT door by taking the A+ exam. Not only that, but as it stands now with the current trends, this (currently) very up-to-date tome is a good standby reference tool.
Having been only accustomed with the Mike Meyers universe of A+ study, this book was like walking into a different culture. It begins with my favorite part of the book: the Real World Scenarios. Often I found myself shuffling through the book looking just for these, some were a bit lacking but for the most part I found them to be relevant, insightful and in a lot of ways bringing the classroom to the reader. A great part of having any type of teacher is how they are able to impart to the student contextual knowledge, thereby putting everything in perspective. I think the Real World Scenario does a great job of accomplishing this. This also helps out in something friends and I have discussed that I happened to notice in the book.

A part that's almost worth the price of admission is the introduction, all in all, it's a mini study guide. I believe someone could use the intro for some last minute recognition and cramming. I believe this will come in handy for prospective A+ test takers.
As far as the negatives, while I have previously complimented much of the format used throughout, I do have a couple of qualms. For starters, when it comes to the OS-es, I think it would be a tad bit easier if it was separated by chapter. Command-line gets a chapter, 2K gets a chapter and XP gets a chapter. In some ways it seems a bit mashed together. The other les with the exam itself.
Instead of two clearly defined exams: OS and Hardware, there are 4 exams, but you only have to take 2: The "core" exam: Essentials and from there you can choose one of 3 tests. While I could go into more details, just looking at the outline and objectives, they all seem the same but just vary on the amount of customer interaction. It's nice to go the route of Microsoft and others with paths to certification, but it seems like it's more hype than anything else, almost irrelevant. Of course, without having ever taken the test, I can't be entirely sure. We'll just have to wait for the first victims to find out if I'm right or not.
All in all, the format is friendly and inviting. I thought that I would dread going through another A+ book, but I thought the approach was a breath of fresh air. It brings the classroom to the reader. The labs/exercises, scenarios, tips and notes do a marvelous job of getting the point across. I was even impressed by some of the technology covered. The various printers, scanner and media technology got some page time, so while it may, in some cases, give too much information, the book will stand the test of time on a shelf for easy reference.

MCTS Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Configuration Study Guide: Exam 70-667 Review

MCTS Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Configuration Study Guide: Exam 70-667
Average Reviews:

Just finished my 70-667 exam and failed pretty miserably. Honestly, this book will not prepare you to take this exam in the least. The example test questions are no where near what you receive in the test nor remotely prepare you for the exam. I honestly took every practice exam in this book after a week long course and felt well prepared for the exam. I was massacred!! I can't talk about the exam obviously because of the NDA, but honestly do not purchase this book. You are better off buying the Wrox Professional SharePoint 2010 Administration and doing examples with a VM.

CompTIA Network+ Deluxe Study Guide: Exam N10-004 Review

CompTIA Network+ Deluxe Study Guide: Exam N10-004
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is very readable. The author's personal touch makes it more enjoyable. This makes going through a dry subject easier. A special strength for this book is when it deals with subnetting in much detail. There is one chapter and an appendix on this subject.
The annoying part is all the typos, misstatements, and wrong answers. The text has a few wrong answers, but the practice exams and flashcards on the CD have numerous wrong answers (about 13) along with all the typos. The book and accompanying materials should have been proof-read before being published. Because of this, I would rate this book below average. The cool thing about all this is that the majority of the text material taught me what was wrong in those conflicting areas. I'd prefer a guide book that's more reliable, though.

CompTIA Linux+ Complete Study Guide: Exams LX0-101 and LX0-102 Review

CompTIA Linux+ Complete Study Guide: Exams LX0-101 and LX0-102
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book on Amazon when it came out a few months ago. I have the older Linux+ book (for the previous version of the Linux+ exam) but that version of CompTIA Linux+ is ending as of Oct 31 2010 (it consisted of a single 90 question exam - equiv of 6 months of Linux experience). So I was undecided on what exactly I should do: A.) Push it and take the existing test before Oct 31 2010 or B.) Just take the new Linux+ exam (actually two tests) powered by LPI. Since I had heard that the LPI version is much more comprehensive, I figured I'd go that route. Well let me tell you this book and from what I can surmise the new exam as well, is no joke. This book is way more in-depth and detailed than the previous Linux+ books. It is now recommended by CompTIA that you first achieve your A+ and your Network+ certification, as well as have 1 year of Linux admin level experience before attempting Linux+. If you want a taste of what this study book is like the very first chapter starts out with listing commands and explaining regular expressions. I've been working with Linux for some time so this was not a problem for me but if you haven't used Linux before you might want to brush up on your basics before you consider this one... The older books started out explaining what Linux was and what GNU licensing was about, etc (intro type stuff).
I have not taken the exams yet but I will report on how well I do after..

CWNA: Certified Wireless Network Administrator Study Guide (Exam PW0-100) Review

CWNA: Certified Wireless Network Administrator Study Guide (Exam PW0-100)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm using this book as reference material in a wireless LAN course I'm teaching at a local college. I started out using the official CWNA study guide but I like this one better and have switched to it for the following reasons:
1. It is more up to date.
2. It has lots fewer typo errors.
3. The CD adds value to the book.
4. I like the end of chapter multiple choice questions (and the answers are in the book).
5. The authors explain concepts in a clear and concise manner.
I wish the authors could have done more with Security. But security is such a complex topic, it really needs a book of its own and one or two chapters in any book is not enough to really cover this topic.
The students like this book and actually like it better than the books selected by the previous instructor. All in all I think it's a great value. If you want to learn the basics of wireless networking, get this book and a wireless access point and wireless adapter card for your computer and go for it.
