I have purchased other CCIE study guides that state they cover the 350-01 written exam and they don't measure-up to this book. If you have to purchase one CCIE 350-01 book, make this the one you buy.

Firewalls and VPNs: Principles and Practices Review

Firewalls and VPNs: Principles and Practices

This book seems to cover the basics pretty well but the part I'm covering right now (subnetting) is barely explained in the most convoluted way imaginable. I went and got a CCNA book instead and picked it up in 10 minutes. Unless you need this book for school, pass it up. There are much better ones out there.

Tuning the Brain: Principles and Practice of Neurosomatic Medicine Review

Tuning the Brain: Principles and Practice of Neurosomatic Medicine
Average Reviews:

I was housebound and often bedridden for 15 years with severe Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I tried many treatment approaches but nothing had any beneficial effect. I began working with Dr. Goldstein in 2001, following the experimental drug protocol set forth in this book. I was on the meds he prescribed for 3 years. During that time, I gradually recovered. I am now off the meds, working fulltime, and living a normal life. I know this approach does not work for everyone, but it has worked for many people with CFS, and I would recommend giving it serious consideration. Dr. Goldstein's hypothesis is that CFS is the result of a malfunction of the nervous system in which the neurons are over-responsive to stimuli. Sounds, smells, bright lights, stress, etc. all over-stimulate the over-reactive nervous system, causing fatigue and adrenal exhaustion. This is certainly consistent with my own experience of the illness. The meds reduce synaptic transmission. Over time, they can restore the nervous system to normal functioning.

Discover effective, outcome-oriented ways to help CFS patients who have endured useless or inappropriate treatments! From the author: “For many years I have viewed brain function as a system of electrochemical impulses continually flashing through the brain. These neural networks can often be modulated fairly simply by 'tuning' them. The point I have been trying to make for many years is that this process may be pharmacologically regulated extremely rapidly in a manner which does not yet seem to be recognized by the medical profession.” In this remarkable volume, Dr. Jay A. Goldstein clearly presents both the theoretical and the practical aspects of his revolutionary approach to treating CFS and other conditions that have often been termed psychosomatic. Dr. Goldstein (author of Chronic Fatigue Syndromes: The Limbic Hypothesis and Betrayal by the Brain: The Neurologic Basis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia Syndrome, and Related Neural Network Disorders) shows how he achieves results for patients with CFS and a variety of other syndromes in days, rather than months or years. This well-referenced book answers questions, from the most basic to the most complex, including:
What is neurosomatic medicine?
How did Dr. Goldstein come to pioneer and practice this specialty?
What abnormalities in brain function produce neurosomatic disorders?
How can an understanding of these abnormalities help you provide effective treatment?
Why do these treatments sometimes work so rapidly?
What is receptor profiling, and how does it indicate the type of receptor dysregulation in an individual patient?
In Part I: Inventing Neurosomatic Medicine, Dr. Goldstein describes the remarkable how and why of his life and his development of this new field of medicine, including his clashes with the medical/psychoanalytic establishment. One of the greatest medical innovators of the modern era, Dr. Goldstein has seen over 20,000 CFS patients and has experienced most of the pitfalls that having such a large number of patients entails. He shares his insight on legal issues, such as how to deal with the law and court systems, how to best provide expert testimony, and how to defend against spurious legal actions. In addition, Dr. Goldstein describes how he learned to work effectively outside of the managed care system. In Part II: Society for Neuroscience Conference Proceedings, the author shares his expertise to bring you experimental results and “pearls of wisdom” relating to neurosomatic medicine from the 28th and 29th Annual Meetings of the Society for Neuroscience—the largest and most important neuroscience conference in the world. Dr. Goldstein sorted through thousands of experiments presented at the conferences to bring you the most relevant findings. Part III: Pathophysiology and Treatment is essential reading for anyone planning to practice neurosomatic medicine. In this section, richly illustrated with over 70 pages of color figures and diagrams that make complicated concepts clear, Dr. Goldstein shares his knowledge about dozens of the agents he uses to help CFS sufferers and others manage their pain, fatigue, and other symptoms. This is information that simply cannot be found anywhere else, and will prove invaluable to all fledgling neurosomatic practitioners. This one-of-a-kind volume is thoughtfully put together—from the extensive list of abbreviations near the beginning to the exhaustive references and an appendix with diagnostic criteria, a treatment algorithm, a medication list of treatment options available now or in the near future, and a checklist of CFS symptoms.

Java(tm) in Practice: Design Styles and Idioms for Effective Java Review

Java(tm) in Practice: Design Styles and Idioms for Effective Java
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Overall, this book does a decent job of explaining good design techniques to the programmer who is already familiar with Java. There are plenty of code examples, along with UML diagrams to help explain the designs that are presented. There's even an appendix on UML for those unfamiliar with the modeling language.
There are some flaws in this book, however. The book is not updated for Java 2, and is therefore rapidly becoming obsolete. Additionally, a significant number of typos and inconsistent use of terms clouds the already difficult subject matter. Especially bad is the discussion of the Cloneable interface, in which the authors state that different compilers treat Cloneable classes differently, but do not explain what the correct behavior is according to the Java Language Specification or how to work around these compiler problems.
There is some good material in the book, but in my opinion not enough of it and too many problems in the presentation, to justify the cover price.

CompTIA Security+ Exam Cram (2nd Edition) Review

CompTIA Security+ Exam Cram (2nd Edition)
Average Reviews:

Before I purchased this book I was studying CompTIA Security+ All-in-One Exam Guide, CompTIA Security+ Deluxe Study Guide: SY0-201 and VTC ( online tutorials ). While I passed all of the book exams with 90 % + I still failed CompTIA's Security + practice test. The questions on CompTia's practice test were nothing like the test questions in these books. The best I got was a 75%.
As soon I received this book, Exam Cram, I took a week and studied with it. I took the CompTia practice exam and scored 88%. I feel that this book made a big difference.
I took the Security + exam today and passed with an 832 out of 900 on the first try ( 750 was passing). I feel that I would have not passed this test without studying this book.
The actual CompTIA Security + test was similar to the questions in this book. In my opinion the CompTIA test was written by someone with a poor grasp on the english language as it was very misleading. The sentence structure was so bad I thought I failed. To pass this test, understand the concepts as it really tests your knowledge in application not technical.
This is my first CompTIA test.

Cryptography & Network Security (McGraw-Hill Forouzan Networking) Review

Cryptography and Network Security (McGraw-Hill Forouzan Networking)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I teach an introductory cryptography class at the University of Denver. I have been seeking a good text for six years, but I have been disappointed with all that I have tried. Forouzan's book is the answer to my dreams.
It is neither over-simplified nor overly rigorous. Theorem proofs are saved for an appendix, so students don't get bogged down in the math before they have had a chance to assimilate the cryptographic concepts. Copious illustrations help with the most complex topics. Practice problems provide an opportunity for students to test their mastery and for the instructor to measure their progress.
The primary focus of the text is network security - specifically, e-mail, SSL and IPsec. (Esoteric protocols such as secure elections and digital cash are not discussed at all.) This text, in essence, is an elaboration of the final part of Forouzan's TCP/IP text. As such, it is extremely useful to those who are looking for skills that are immediately applicable to the work environment.

Wireless Communications: Principles and Practice (2nd Edition) Review

Wireless Communications: Principles and Practice (2nd Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a lecturer in Mobile Telecommunications I was concerned that this book is light on detail in some places, and authoritatively wrong in others. For example, the author makes basic errors in his description of the GSM logical architecture (particularly with respect to the network databases) and he does not describe the current HR and EFR GSM voice codecs; the section on IS-95 CDMA does not describe soft handoff or cell identification in detail and has not been updated to describe IS-95A. His derivation of Erlang B is also missing a number of key steps. These factors make this textbook unrecommendable for my students. A THOROUGH revision is in order for the next edition.
