Web-Based Labs Review

Web-Based Labs
Average Reviews:

I just wanted to post a quick "review" for anyone who hasn't used a LabMentors product before like me. The CD itself is just a Demo CD that shows brief introductory videos on how to set up a new account, and how to navigate the on-line menu system. What you're paying for is the Pass Code that will let you set up a new account, as well as for on-line lab time. You're not actually going to install anything, since all lab work is browser based. Do not buy this product used unless the seller specifically states the Pass Code is unused, but even then I would be weary since you will not be able to access the on-line labs with a used Pass Code. I just recently got this product for a networking class, so I will update this to an actual review of the product itself, once I have completed the course.

CompTIA Security+ Study Guide: Exam SY0-101

This is an excellent study guide for the Security+ exam. The sample questions on the CD are almost exactly what is on the real exam, in fact I actually found one question that was identical verbatim to what was on the CD. I think going through the chapter exams and reading on the subjects you miss questions on is the best way to study for the Security+ which is a fairly tough exam. This is the only resource I used and I got an 885/900. You will not be disappointed with this book and especially not with the CD which is worth the price by itself thanks to its excellent sample tests.

CompTIA Security+ Certification Kit: SY0-201 Review

CompTIA Security+ Certification Kit: SY0-201
Average Reviews:

I highly recommend this kit to anyone preparing to take the Security+ exam. I did it by reading the entire Security+ Study Guide while testing myself chapter by chapter using the CDs test engine (also included on the CD is the entire book in PDF format which can be quite convenient). Then I moved onto the Fast Pass book which reinforced what I already knew from the previous book. Also included in the Fast Pass book is another CD with a test engine on it (unfortunately no pdf of the book on this one though). That's really all I did. I studied for about 8-10 hours a day for about 11 days and on day 12 took the exam and passed; I'm now a CompTIA Security+ certified IT Professional!

CompTIA Security+ Deluxe Study Guide: Exam SY0-301

Curious as to what the differences are between the standard edition of the study guide (which sells for much less) and the "Deluxe" edition, it turns out the most significant difference is in the media. For some reason, the publisher isn't going out of their way to make it readily apparent, but the Deluxe/hardbound edition has a CD which includes a slew of items not in the standard edition. Among them: almost an hour of video on security topics, a "simulation engine" that lets you test your knowledge with something other than multiple choice, more bonus tests and a whole lot of PDFs - lab exercises, cabling info, etc. There is so much value in the CD alone, that it would be nice to see it packaged and sold separate or at least advertised as being the differentiator between the two books.

The book is built on a clean language, the ideas are well organized inside each chapter, but you could perceive that chapters themselves are not in the optimal order...Sometimes you have to jump from one chapter to another to cover completely an idea exposed in this book.
On the other hand, you will have to buy additional simulations and practice questions to complete your preparation, because this book does not offer you practice questions with the appropiate level of complexity compared to the real exam.

The book came quickly and was in great shape!
I own two other books on the Security+ exam,( Sybex's CompTIA Security+ Review Guide: SY0-201 and CompTIA Security+ Exam Cram (1st Edition)) This one from Syngress is clearly the better study guide! Loved the chapter on virtual technology. They cover the exam completely and in some areas they give more than scope of the exam.
I'm very impressed with the way exam objectives are clearly outlined and detailed to the CompTIA way of doing things. It's one thing to know IT security, but for the exam you also need to know how the CompTIA exam author(s) think. If your looking for a quick easy study guide to pass the Security+ exam I think this is one of the best books to pick-up.

CompTIA's Security+ certification is a globally-recognized, vendor neutral exam that has helped over 60,000 IT professionals reach further and higher in their careers. The current Security+ exam (SY0-201) focuses more on being able to deal with security issues rather than just identifying them.

The new exam covers six major topics: Systems Security, Network Infrastructure, Access Control, Assessments and Audits, Cryptography, and Organizational Security.

This third edition has been updated to follow and cover the new exam objectives. After reading this book not only will you be able to pass the exam but you will have a working knowledge of cryptography, security legislation, vulnerability assessments, logical access control methods, and much more.
*Complete exam-prep package includes full coverage of new Security+ objectives andtwo complete practice exams*Authored by a leading Microsoft security expert.*A good reference for both beginning security professionals and a seasoned IT person, this book goes beyond the exam objectives to cover the technology, and how that technology is currently being deployed in the business world and what the future of the technology may be. CISSP: Certified Information Systems Security Professional Study Guide Review

CISSP: Certified Information Systems Security Professional Study Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I must admit a soft spot for Sybex (and Ed Tittel) study guides, having used them extensively for Microsoft exams. This book follows in that tradition, providing a good balance between detailed explanation and comprehensive coverage of the exam topics.
The bundled CD is useful. I raced through the 250 flash cards in an hour, which is good for jogging the memory. The four bonus exams, of 75 questions each, are good, but are not as difficult as the real thing. These exams provide grades broken down by each CISSP exam domain, which is excellent for identifying topics for revision.
One book can not guarantee coverage of all CISSP exam topics, particularly given the long list of references on the CISSP suggested reading list. I also skimmed through a friend's copy of Shon Harris's "All-in-One" exam guide. I would still rate this book higher, but Harris's book covers some topics in more detail then the Sybex book. The "All-in-One" practice exams are more difficult, though some of the questions are not clearly worded.
The biggest disappoint I have with the exam preparation experience is with the CISSP's ten domains. The examination questions are based on 'good exam fodder' from topics in the ten domains. The topics lean towards an academic approach to security, rather then knowledge needed by a working security professional.
The other references I would strongly suggest to help to gain a security brain, as well as a high exam score include: Stephen Northcutt's `Inside Network Perimeter Security', Ross Anderson's `Security Engineering', and Syngress's `Special Ops'. Maybe I should take one of the SANS security exams, which are much more practical in nature.
And best of luck with the exam!

Security Administrator Street Smarts: A Real World Guide to CompTIA Security+ Skills Review

Security Administrator Street Smarts: A Real World Guide to CompTIA Security+ Skills
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not an Exam Cram type of book, this book is aimed at giving newcomers to the security field a solid background and understanding of what the job entails. Only incidentally does this book follow the CompTIA Security+ certificate examination (Exam #SY0-101) recommendations and thus provide a dual purpose.
The book is organized into tenphases or major sections. Each phase then has a series of Tasks to be performed. The first phase is entitled 'The Grunt Work of Security.' In it you start by making a security assessment of your network. By phase 10 you have completed hardening, securing the storage, set up user accounts, protected against virus and other malware attacks and more. In phase 10 you study troubleshooting.
I found the book to be easy reading, and the phase/task approach worked well for me. It provides a well needed break in the reading. And let's face it, reading about security is a lot less exciting than reading about Harry Potter.

Walks you through a variety of common tasks, demonstrating step by step how to perform them and how to circumvent roadblocks you may encounter

CompTIA Security+ All-in-One Exam Guide, Second Edition (Exam SY0-201) Review

CompTIA Security+ All-in-One Exam Guide, Second Edition (Exam SY0-201)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
According to CompTIA's website, while not a prerequisite, they recommend that an individual sitting the Security+ exam have "at least two years of on-the-job technical networking experience, with an emphasis on security." They further recommend having the Network+ certification. My review of this book is based on an assumption that the individual using this book either meets these recommendations or, through some other means, has equivalent knowledge and experience.
As the author of an eLearning program that helps prepare people for the Security+ exam, I have considered the Security+ 2008 objectives more than most. This book covers everything you need to know to pass the Security+ exam - assuming you have the fundamentals of networking down. As an example, on page 15 (very early in the book) the authors assume you know what a port is when they say, "A network administrator can, for instance, move a service from its default port to a different port..." There is no explanation as to what a "port" is and, according to CompTIA's recommendations, there need not be.
I've given this as a simple example, but the book is filled with assumptions. It's probably a good thing. The book is nearly 700 pages now; imagine how large it would be if all of the knowledge were provided in this single resource. If you don't meet the recommendations that CompTIA suggests, I would encourage you to get this book along with your choice of a Network+ study guide. Then, even if you don't wish to acquire the Network+ certification, you will have the knowledge you need for the assumed information in this book.
I particularly liked the organization of this book. Part I deals with the theory of security (principles, organizational requirements, legal issues, etc.) and provides a foundation for the rest of the book. Part II deals with confidentiality in quite a bit more depth than is required by the Security+ exam. The coverage is closer to that needed for the CISSP exam. The next two parts, Security in the Infrastructure and Security in Transmission address the security needs for network access, data access and data transfer. The final part, excluding the Appendices, is Part V; here, issues related to operational and administrative security are addressed.
Overall, the information is presented in a sequence that makes it both digestible and memorable. I have to say that, in my opinion, this is the best Security+ book to come along yet.

perfect! i love this book. i had the original microsoft security+ book for class, and this book covered WAY more than what that book did, and alot less pages. i'm going to take my security+ certification exam on the 18th of December. i'm feeling very confident, as this book says it covers 100% of the exam. i'm just hoping there's no scenarios on the test =p, just questions about what i learned in the book, lol.
EDIT: Passed my exam with a 865/900 with this book! About 2-3 tricky questions throughout the entire test but it was ALL familiar. There was absolutely NOTHING unfamiliar on this test that the book didn't cover! Thank you :)

Before I purchased this book I was studying CompTIA Security+ All-in-One Exam Guide, CompTIA Security+ Deluxe Study Guide: SY0-201 and VTC ( online tutorials ). While I passed all of the book exams with 90 % + I still failed CompTIA's Security + practice test. The questions on CompTia's practice test were nothing like the test questions in these books. The best I got was a 75%.
As soon I received this book, Exam Cram, I took a week and studied with it. I took the CompTia practice exam and scored 88%. I feel that this book made a big difference.
I took the Security + exam today and passed with an 832 out of 900 on the first try ( 750 was passing). I feel that I would have not passed this test without studying this book.
The actual CompTIA Security + test was similar to the questions in this book. In my opinion the CompTIA test was written by someone with a poor grasp on the english language as it was very misleading. The sentence structure was so bad I thought I failed. To pass this test, understand the concepts as it really tests your knowledge in application not technical.
This is my first CompTIA test.

CompTIA Security+ SY0-201 Practice Questions Exam Cram (2nd Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I accidently reviewed the previous version of the book when what I bought was this one...
I generally like the Exam Cram series, but this one disappoints.
The book itself is not too bad, but the software has some major issues! It will tell you that you got a question wrong and then in the explaination tell you that your answer was right. So IF you are going to use it at all, use the software in "Practice Mode" and check your answer against the text not and just the highlighted "correct" answer. For example, one question asked (paraphrased): In a decentralized anti-virus setup who is responsible for updating the client? Answers were: A central server, the user, the vendor, the manager. I chose the user and was told it was wrong according to the scoring and according to the highlighting the correct answer is the vendor. The explanation said that a central server isn't used in a decentralized setup, and the manager isn't responsible. It went on says that the vendor is "NEVER reponsible" for the client, and that the user will be responsible for keeping the software up to date. I've gone through about 250 questions out of 800 and there are numerous of these like this... To the point that I no longer trust the product and have purchased a simulation from a reputable online vendor.

Security+ Guide to Network Security Fundamentals Review

Security+ Guide to Network Security Fundamentals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book for two reasons: first I needed it for a security class this summer, second I needed a book with good testing software to prepare for the CompTIA Security+ exam. It served its purpose and I passed the exam easily.
The practice exam software is good, but I have used this exam engine from Certblaster before and the question text size they use is too small, which is very irratiting especially since there is plenty of room to use a larger text size. Unlike other books that use the same Certblaster software (usually a Course Technology publication), this one does not use the other functions that the test software offers, like providing the explanations to the questions, so you can actually learn as you go. Someone got lazy. Also the end of chapter question drills, which ask up to 20 questions, provide neither the answer OR the explanation key so you can check yourself; you have to dig through the text. End of chapter quizzes are really good learning tools, but these ones make you work too hard, and waste your time by making you hunt down the correct answers in a chapter you just read. They could at least give the answers, even if they are too lazy to provide the explanations. So, as an exam prep book, this one really falls down on its face in that area. I hate to criticize this fine book, but for almost 100.00 these overpriced Course Technology books should be doing better than this.
It is a good book as far as the text and layout go, very readable and enjoyable. But unless you need it for a class (as is often the case with Course Technology books), save your money and get the Sybex book, or Sybex+something else like the ExamCram and STILL pay less than half what this book costs.
I give it 3 stars. I would have given 5 except for the inexcusable lack of answers/explanations to the end of chapter review questions, the lack of answers/explanations to the Certblaster practice exams, and the insane price.
