Creating, configuring, and customizing intranet and internet portals.
Using site columns, content types, and official records using SharePoint
server Enterprise Content management.
Scaling out to a SharePoint server farm, and backing up restoring a farm.
Logging and process analysis of SharePoint and related technologies.

The SharePoint book that I have been waiting for the most has finally arrived. Back when I first heard that Ted Pattision and Daniel Larson were teaming up to write a SharePoint book, I got pretty excited. I knew these guys would have a knock-out book for SharePoint developers, and I'm happy to say I was right.
With this book, you will learn how to:
* Build application pages and site pages
* Develop and deploy reusable Web parts to enable customization and personalization
* Exploit Windows SharePoint APIs to deploy Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX components
* Use XML and Collaborative Application Markup Language (CAML) to create provisioning components
* Design and implement custom document libraries
* Use Windows Workflow Foundation to create applications that automate business process
* Create Site Definitions to aggregate components and package them for deployment
* Implement Code Access Security, Trust Levels, authentication, and authorization
Do yourself a huge favor, and spend five minutes ordering yourself a copy. It will save you hours down the road.

Essential SharePoint 2007: A Practical Guide for Users, Administrators and Developers Review

Essential SharePoint 2007: A Practical Guide for Users, Administrators and Developers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book looking for answers beyond the basic user level and failed to find any. The book is good at giving overviews of features in SharePoint 2007 and the pictures are a plus. However, this book does not go into enought detail on topics a SharePoint site administrator should really know. For example, I can NOT find anything here on how to utilize the Gannt view list for projects. There is also no information on how to create and utilize KPI (Key Performance Indicator) list templates! The book only glosses over the definition and does not go into further detail. At the sametime, it goes into detail about including images and flash animations by adding HTML codes; something meant for very advanced users. There is no user level consistency in this book which is truly disappointing. I have found more answers by experimenting on SharePoint myself than through this book. Don't waste your money here.

Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Server 2007 Administrator's Companion Review

Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Server 2007 Administrator's Companion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is geared toward readers such as Web Developers, Information Management / Compliance Specialist, Administrators to name but a few. If you are a beginner to Sharepoint Server 2007, this book will be a most difficult read. The concepts and topics that are presented will have to be re-enforced with online research or the purchase of another book.
To give an example.
The book is composed of six sections, with the first three ( 663 pages in length ) being targeted towards administration and configuration. However, within this mix we have presentations on performance monitoring and MOM 2005, high level discussions on information security policies such as password and storage policies, data classification. We are introduced to advanced Enterprise topics such as the Business Data Catalogue and records compliance ( that is the Sarbanes Oxley Act etc. ). These discussions all assume prior expertise and should you be new to Sharepoint Server 2007 this will no doubt frustrate you. The Authors, in their quest to appeal to a wide variety of readers, cannot delve into the in-depth explanations, followed up by well worked out examples that a beginner to Sharepoint Server 2007 would require.
Web Developers will tend to focus on Sections 5 and 6. While these sections do introduce Workflow Services, Webparts and products like Sharepoint Designer I found the overriding theme is again one of high level discussion and overviews. Expertise is assumed.
Overall I would say that if you are coming from a background with some expertise in Sharepoint Server 2003 or you require a high level picture of the abundance of features that Sharepoint 2007 can bring to your organisation in addition to how it integrates with other server platforms, such as ISA 2006 for example, you will enjoy this book and the nuggets of useful information it provides. The writing style is not engaging; this book is not a joy to read but it will tell you what can be done with Sharepoint Server 2007, outline best practices and point you in the correct direction. The how-to part is very much left to yourself.
If however, your goal in purchasing this book is an in-depth knowledge of the installation, administration and configuration of Sharepoint 2007 and you have no prior expertise with Sharepoint Server 2003 or indeed 2001, then you will gain little benefit from this book. You will find it difficult to read, difficult to digest and your understanding of Sharepoint 2007 will not improve. If anything, you may be discouraged from using Sharepoint Server 2007 which would be a shame as the product is in my opinion really good. Regards.

MCTS: Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Configuration Study Guide: Exam 70-630 Review

MCTS: Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Configuration Study Guide: Exam 70-630
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently passed exam 70-630 (MCTS: MOSS Configuration) and this book was one of the study methods I used for preparing for the exam. Overall, this is an excellent resource for not only the exam but I found it to be a decent reference manual as well. The book covers all of the concepts you "need to know" without going into the great depths of every detail. It's easy to read and follow and retain the information. It is also they only book available specifically geared towards exam 70-630.
If you understand all of the concepts of this book and can answer the practice questions provided with it, you are more than ready for the real exam. My only critique about it is that I did not find the practice questions to be very helpful as many of them were much more detailed and more complicated than the actual exam. However, it's better to err on the side of complexity than making the practice questions too easy.
I would recommend pairing this book with a practice test vendor such as Self Test Software or Transcender and you should be successful in achieving your MCTS in MOSS Configuration.
Overall it's a very good study guide and reference book.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Best Practices Review

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Best Practices
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When deploying SharePoint, it is critical to plan for not only what you need now, but for how it will grow and scale down the road, especially when Document Management is involved. If you don't plan adequately for searchability, scalability, or disaster recovery, you can easily run into problems.
One criticism I have had of many SharePoint books is that they are written from a technical perspective and explain how to install and configure SharePoint, but they gloss over the critical planning stages or the best practices for scalability.
As the name of this book indicates, this is a very thorough guide covering the best practices for planning, deploying, optimizing, and organizing SharePoint. This book is not necessarily intended to give you step-by-step instructions for installing SharePoint, but rather cover the full lifecycle of a SharePoint deployment and give you best practice recommendations. The layout and organization of the book is very logical, making it easy to quickly find what you are looking for. It covers both Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and MOSS 2007.It is written to be accessible by anyone on a team evaluating or implementing SharePoint, or anyone who just wants to learn more about it.
The book is broken into the following sections:
Introduction--includes an overview of the various SharePoint Technologies, how to determine which you need, and how SharePoint will help your business.
Part I--Planning--This is not just about planning for the IT infrastructure, but more about planning for the impact that SharePoint will have on your organization, such as dealing with push-back from users after moving away from shared folders to SharePoint document libraries and breaking down departmental "information kingdoms."
Part II--Building--This section gets into best practices for building your environment, including content management strategies, the role of custom development, and dev and test environments, including replication of content between environments.
Part III--Deploying--This section has a great discussion about organizing your content and search/crawling strategy to optimize searchability for your content, security of content, business intelligence, and intranet/extranet/internet deployment scenarios.
Part IV--Operating--This section has great tips on availability, disaster recovery, capacity planning, and performance monitoring.
What I appreciated most about this book is it is very readable and does not include a lot of "fluff," just straightforward best practices. For example, in Chapter 8, the section on should SharePoint replace file servers is very straightforward about the limitation of SharePoint and when file servers should still be used.
If you are someone new to SharePoint or a System Administrator charged with deploying SharePoint, this book may leave you wanting more--it is not designed to be a how-to book; however, it does include many good recommendations for additional resources.
