The sample questions on the CD are almost exactly what is on the real exam, in fact I actually found one question that was identical verbatim to what was on the CD. I think going through the chapter exams and reading on the subjects you miss questions on is the best way to study for the Security+ which is a fairly tough exam. This is the only resource I used and I got an 885/900. You will not be disappointed with this book and especially not with the CD which is worth the price by itself thanks to its excellent sample tests.

MCSE Exam Cram 2 Bundle (70-290, 70-291, 70-293 & 70-294) Review

(More customer reviews)The PrepLogic exam simulator CDs that come with the Exam Cram 2 books are only 50 questions long and many of those questions have typos and are repeated more then once! I bought the book pack partly because it came with this exam simulator software, so minus a star for that.
The book itself, however, is pretty good. It does a nice job of concisely conveying the information and providing step-by-step instructions when needed. It also comes with a neat little "cheat sheet" that's filled with little important facts you need to know for that exam. The CD also has the book in PDF format which is a big plus for me.
However, the book does have it's problems. For example: for the exam 70-291 the subject of subnetting is never discussed and this IS on the exam. A quick brush-up on subnetting would be nice (the MSPress Self-Paced Training Kit does subnetting in one chapter). I also found minor typos, including mention of HFNetchk for checking for security hot fixes which has been replaced by MBSA. Minus another star.

It has the facts you need and if you need more information- you can easily find it online as well. The accompanying CD is more than adequate as well. Cisco is not giving the CCNA Certificate away anymore. They really want you to learn and earn it. I purchase this because I felt the sybex CCNA didn't cover the exam in full detail (Especially the NAT section). This Book is Well Written. The Price wasn't that bad either since it came with 2 Books (Intro&ICND) and a 30min Video CD. You won't be disappointed. A+

Security+ Certification Exam Cram 2 (Exam Cram SYO-101) Review

(More customer reviews)I have never used the Exam Cram series books as a single source to prepare for any certification exam. I believe that their intent is to provide a good final review of the subject matter in preparation for an exam -- sort of like the old Cliff Notes that we used to buy in college. Coupled with the PrepLogic exam on the CD (you would do well to purchase the complete set of questions), it is an adequate preparation tool.
The only criticism that I can offer is that the material in the book (as well as the PrepLogic practice exams) tends to err on the easy side. I found myself scoring consistently in the low 90's on the first take of each practice exam, whereas I passed the actual test with a score of 828.
The Security+ exam is not an overly difficult test, but it is not a pushover either. If you use this book as it was intended to be used, it will probably help you. If you use it as your sole source of study, you will probably be disappointed with the outcome.

A+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide Review

(More customer reviews)Ok. There have been some negative reviews about this book and I wanted to add my 2 cents to this. It is possible to pass the A+ Certification exams using little more than this book. I should know, as I personally did it. It wasn't easy, it took a lot of studying, and my scores weren't the greatest, but I did pass using little more than the book and practice exams that came on the CD with the book. I got a 574 on the Core and a 619 on the OS. Not impressive, but I'm not saying this book will make you incredible, I'm just saying you can pass using very little besides this book.
My strategy went as follows:
1) Read the book staight through for about 2 weeks, reading 150-300 pages a day while TAKING NOTES. Writing the information physically on a sheet of paper helps a lot.
2) Memorize the notes you took. Ingrain everything you think is important into your brain. And this isn't just necessarily facts. Its the concepts behind the facts. This book did a really good job with those and because of it, I was able to correctly guess a good number of the questions on the OS exam that would have otherwise stumped me.
3) Read the Objectives off CompTIA's website! This will help you catch anything that the book missed.
4) Take the practice exams with the book. I left one exam for Core and OS until I felt like I was done studying and just wanted a confidence boost. Don't underestimate this. Attitude can make a big difference. Also, don't underestimate the value of the practice exams. They are about as tough as the real thing. Some questions easier, some harder, but overall about the same difficulty.
5) Retake those practice exams until everything you missed is ingrained into your mind. There were at least 6 or 7 questions on each test I ONLY got right because I remembered getting them wrong on the practice exams.
6) Find any practice exams or questions online that you can. I opted to use some free ones, many of them only being about 10 questions or so, but they gave me other perspectives and ways to ask questions that I hadn't seen.
7) If you can, get some hands on experience. If the book is going over the Recovery Console, do it yourself. If you can picture doing things on the computer in your mind, it will help when it comes to test time.
8) Good luck! The more info you can get, the better, but with this book and your wits, you should at least be able to do better than I did. It took me about a month total of solid studying, and this is from someone who one year ago didn't even know how to build a PC, and had only made 3 before taking the test.
So overall, I think this book is worth it. I can't say anything about the competition because I haven't used it, but for about 50 bucks, this book is well written and easy to read, tells you at least MOST of what you know while being a little entertaining at the same time, and will come in handy as a great reference book. I've given it 5 stars not because its the most amazing thing written, but that it did what it was supposed to: get me to pass the A+ Exam.
I hope this review is helpful to those of you considering getting your certification!

CISSP Certification All-in-One Exam Guide, Fourth Edition (Cissp All-In-One Exam Guide) Review

Having taken (and passed) the CISSP several years ago, I need to retake this exam and bought three books for review and study purposes. I have a previous version of the Harris book and it is ~900 pages. This new version is 1100+ pages, but seems to be filled more with fluff and some of the actually useful knowledge has been removed! One example which stands out is the removal of the effectiveness and acceptance charts for biometrics methods. This is an important concept and it is entirely ignored in this version. Other things have been changed to no real benefit. The CIA triad (as is the de-facto acronym, even in her previous book) has been renamed to the ICA triad. There is no reason for this.
Finally, the entire book is written in a dumbed-down, cutesy fashion in an attempt (I believe) to make the book more approachable. All it has done, IMO, has increased the number of pages, possibly forcing out relevant materials.
I will pass this test, but it won't be because of this book. Buy the ISC book and the Krutz book (and/or a previous version of the Harris book) - you will not be disappointed.
UPDATE: ok, took the test in Sept and passed. I won't turn this into a test review as this is about the book, but when you buy a certification book, your primary requirement is that the book will be timely and relevant to the test material. The 4th Edition Harris book does just that. ISC has made significant changes to both the content and nature of the test (in large part to keep its test current on security trends and to satisfy a larger target audience) and Shon has captured those changes very well. So, having said all that, it is my revised opinion that this book is more than adequate for passing the test (although it is still filled with fluff.) If I could change the review, I would probably give it 4 stars at this point. The ISC book and the Krutz book are both excellent references to actually apply the knowledge in a meaningful way, however if you just want to pass the test, the Harris book will serve you well.

(More customer reviews)I recently passed exam 70-630 (MCTS: MOSS Configuration) and this book was one of the study methods I used for preparing for the exam. Overall, this is an excellent resource for not only the exam but I found it to be a decent reference manual as well. The book covers all of the concepts you "need to know" without going into the great depths of every detail. It's easy to read and follow and retain the information. It is also they only book available specifically geared towards exam 70-630.
If you understand all of the concepts of this book and can answer the practice questions provided with it, you are more than ready for the real exam. My only critique about it is that I did not find the practice questions to be very helpful as many of them were much more detailed and more complicated than the actual exam. However, it's better to err on the side of complexity than making the practice questions too easy.
I would recommend pairing this book with a practice test vendor such as Self Test Software or Transcender and you should be successful in achieving your MCTS in MOSS Configuration.
Overall it's a very good study guide and reference book.

CISSP All-in-One Exam Guide, Fifth Edition Review

(More customer reviews)There is no simple formula to prepare for the CISSP certification, and no single resource which can guarantee success on the certification exam since every applicant's background is unique. However, this book (fifth edition) was my only resource in preparing for the exam and I passed on my first attempt (April 24, 2010).
I spent 60+ hours in preparation for the exam... that's 60+ hours of DEDICATED individual study using this book and CD, not 60+ hours spent web surfing during lunch hours or commercial breaks. My recent background is in middle management, with 20 years experience in network architecture and data security, so I already had a firm technical foundation for the test areas dealing with protocols and encryption variations. I also have an MS in Computer Science. Nonetheless, the exam was so broad, with topics covering general principles and concepts, that I could have prepared twice as long and still left the exam with questions about the outcome.
My personal opinion is that formal classroom instruction, through one of the many organizations offering CISSP preparation courses, is a worthwhile companion to Shon Harris' book. A study group is also a good idea. You will not obtain CISSP certification if you take the exam without preparation. This book (fifth edition) was sufficient, but not 100% comprehensive, to prepare me for passing the CISSP test.
Note: Some reviewers do not appreciate Shon's frequent analogies and humor. Most of her analogies helped me internalize the complex topics, but that's my personal learning style. The efforts at humor were generally awful, but every once in a while she was subtle and brilliant enough to make me laugh out loud. Working through Shon's unique writing style was not a problem for me... I actually found it refreshing.

CISSP Practice Questions Exam Cram 2 Review

(More customer reviews)I passed the CISSP examination in NYC last month and used this book as part of my practice drills. I mainly used the practice CD. The book itself is the practice CD in paper form. The questions Gregg asks are specific, yet challenging, and push your level of understanding of the 10 domains. The CD engine works fine, but the "mark" feature had a few issues at the end of a quiz. Overall, I believe that this CD isolated my weakness very well in relation to other quiz engines, so I knew exactly what I needed to spend more time on. The questions on calculating ALE and SLE were useful and applicable in a real world sense. Combine this book with Tittel, Harris and ISC2 study guides and you should really have a command of the material.
