Social Media for Lawyers: The Next Frontier Review

Social Media for Lawyers: The Next Frontier

The book is a comprehensive guide to help lawyers and other legal professionals understand the impact social media has had on the way consumers and in-house counsel find and select lawyers to solve their legal problems. The book is informal, written in clear and easy-to-understand language, and is chock full of illustrations and details.
Carolyn and Niki describe "a goal-centric approach to social media," which enables lawyers to "(1) identify the social media platforms and tools that fit their practices and (2) implement them easily, efficiently, and ethically."
The book suggests that lawyers must grasp three important themes in order effectively use social media: 1) Social media is not going away and will continue to grow and gain acceptance amongst all age groups; 2)Social media is a tool for achieving your goals, not a goal itself; and 3) Social media does not change your ethical obligations.
The authors recognize that social media for lawyers and legal professionals can be overwhelming and, after an historic overview and discussion about the current trends, help you create a practical strategy to using social media to accomplish your goals, including best practices, proper net-iquette, and ethical and legal considerations.
The book is organized in five parts with an easy-to-read font (great for us folks over 50). Each chapter has highly visible headers making it easy to find just what you're looking for. Additionally, there are informative social media factoids throughout the book and screen shots from various social media platforms. The screen shots really make it easy to understand and eliminate a lot of frustration by providing step-by-step instructions.
Here are my "Top Five" takeaways from the book:
1. My favorite: Social media interaction formula found at page 106
2.Social myth busters for legal professionals
3.Tips for setting up winning profiles
4.Ethical and legal issues of social media
5.Additional resources in the appendices including a 10-step countdown to starting a blog, a mini Twitter glossary, an exercise to help you determine which systems are likely to work for you, recommended reading and profile creation information.
As the authors point out, today's consumer is more sophisticated and highly informed. They, along with corporate counsel, are using the power of the Internet, first, to get information about their legal issues through blogs, white papers, videos and online discussions and, second, to identify lawyers with expertise in that area of the law. Once those lawyers or other legal professionals are identified, they are using social media to review credentials and recommendations, all of which help them in the decision-making process. The authors understand this trend and provide the information about how to get started and be successful as a lawyer or legal professional.
The overarching theme from Carolyn and Niki is, "technology is here to stay." The final chapter sums it up nicely: "Technology is here to stay and ignoring it is no longer an option..... It's time for the legal profession to pull its collective head out of the sand when it comes to social media, emerging technologies, and the Internet.
"Law firms and lawyers who turn a blind eye to technology do so to their own detriment, and their failure to acclimate to rapid technological change is going to catch up with them in 2010 and beyond."
The book is informative and timely and gets a BIG thumbs up from me!

CCIE Routing and Switching Certification Guide (4th Edition) Review

CCIE Routing and Switching Certification Guide (4th Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a solid read. I will warn you, it can be "high level" on a lot of different concepts. What I mean by high level is this book is more about hitting the highlights than the nitty gritty.
If you are like me, did your CCNA and your CCNP, then this book will make sense. It admits that "goes into a little more detail than the CCNP material" and that sounds about right. If you are looking for a book and you are a noob that wants to learn about networking this book is NOT for you.
Who's this book for? People that want to take the CCIE Routing and Switching Exam version 4. The book tells you that is what it's for. So again, if you are a CCNP and I mean a REAL CCNP and not some retard who memorized a bunch of answers and can actually perform REAL network duties, then you will be fine with this book.
It will cover what you need to know for the CCIE RS written which really, covers a broad set of topics and doesn't go deep into everything. The lab however will, so while this will get you through the written don't forget to add the following books:
Routing TCP/IP Volume 1 second edition, jeff doyle (CISCO PRESS)
Routing TCP/IP Volume 2, jeff doyle (CISCO PRESS)
MPLS Fundamentals, cisco press
You may also want to read the BCMSN book by cisco press as well.
So for the CCIE RS written, this book is good for that but if you want deep and explanation of line by line what things do, the background on them - this is more of a fly by but essential for your CCIE RS written exam.
So for the CCIE RS Written = 5 stars, if you are using this for the lab, 3 stars you need more, but they tell you that in the book so kudos to them :)
-Nick

CompTIA Network+ Deluxe Study Guide: Exam N10-004 Review

CompTIA Network+ Deluxe Study Guide: Exam N10-004
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is very readable. The author's personal touch makes it more enjoyable. This makes going through a dry subject easier. A special strength for this book is when it deals with subnetting in much detail. There is one chapter and an appendix on this subject.
The annoying part is all the typos, misstatements, and wrong answers. The text has a few wrong answers, but the practice exams and flashcards on the CD have numerous wrong answers (about 13) along with all the typos. The book and accompanying materials should have been proof-read before being published. Because of this, I would rate this book below average. The cool thing about all this is that the majority of the text material taught me what was wrong in those conflicting areas. I'd prefer a guide book that's more reliable, though.

This book is a good selection of several articles that guide us to integrate the aspects theoretical and practical that we must consider when designing the assessment of the individual or groupal activities made by the students in the online courses, not only to give them a grading but to improve their learning.

Addresses the kinds of questions that instructors need to ask themselves as they begin to move at least part of their students' work to an on-line format. The chapters present an initial overview of the need for evaluating students' on-line work with the same care that instructors give to the students' work in hard-copy format; what an instructor needs to know about the technology, a discussion of alternative instructional formats such as group work and fieldwork; as well as participation in chatrooms and threaded discussions. Two chapters address curricular issues and the value of on-line learning as a supplement to more traditional instructional formats. The issues explored here will help guide instructors who are considering using on-line learning in conjunction with their regular classes, as well as those interested in going totally on-line.This is the 91st volume in the Jossey-Bass quarterly series New Directions for Teaching and Learning.

Student Cheating and Plagiarism in the Internet Era: A Wake-Up Call Review

Student Cheating and Plagiarism in the Internet Era: A Wake-Up Call
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I never realized there were so many different ways to cheat on tests in school or to use the Internet to steal somebody else's paper to hand in instead of writing your own. And I had no idea that such a high percentage of students cheat and plagiarize. Now I know what clues to watch for to be sure my son is doing his own work in middle school. I also like the guidelines that tell me how to help my son do his homework and school projects without our being dishonest about it. There are good suggestions for working effectively with school administrators and teachers. Many of the chapters list web sites that have additional information on the chapter's topic. Any parent of a middle school or high school student will learn a lot from this book.
