Dig Dug Review

Dig Dug

I grew up during the 80's so Dig Dug swallowed many quarters. Either I have become much better or this game has become much easier. Seems like full price is too much to charge for a game that is so simplistic it's less than an 8MB download.
For people who haven't heard of Dig Dug (I'm old, *sob*) it's a cartoonish arcade game with a strong resemblence to Nintendo's Mario titles. You are stuck in a giant mound of dirt that takes up almost the entire screen but strangely that doesn't seem to be much of a problem for you. You can dig in any direction almost as fast as you can walk through an already dug tunnel and you'll collect a small amount of points for doing so.
Also in the tunnel are Pookas and Fygars. I forget which is which but I think the Pookas are the ones that look like fat kids and the Fygars look like little dragons. These creatures are trying to attack you but they can't dig the way you can. Instead they change into ghosts where they can float in any direction but at a slower speed than you can move; at least in the early levels. Once back in a tunnel they change back into their regular shape and can move slightly faster than you can.
To defend yourself, you carry a standard air pump that you use to pump up a single creature until it explodes (yes, the drugs were good then). You can only pump up one at a time, so if two are chasing you one can get you while you are busy pumping up the other. You also need to beware of the Fygars as they can breathe dragon fire, but only horizontally, not vertically. Blowing up each creature gets many more points than digging through the dirt and that becomes the main focus of each level. The max points comes from digging underneath a rock so it wiggles for a second and drops. If you time it right, it'll squash an enemy as it falls. There are also increasing bonuses in the center of the screen, similar to the cherries in Pac Man, that appear for a very short time.
So that's the game in a nutshell. Clear out all the baddies, rinse and repeat at a slightly increased difficulty until you lose all your lives. That's all it took to entertain us old folks back in the 80's. This is why I think Namco is being greedy expecting full price for such an old title, even if it is a classic. The "enhanced" mode just changes the graphics a little bit as far as I can tell, nothing revolutionary. You can also see the total amount of dirt dug and other silly stats. It might be a challenge if there were an online leaderboard you could compete against but the game doesn't have that. Personally, I'd wait until Namco Museum 50th Anniversary Collection goes on sale.

Mishap: An Accidental Haunting Review

Mishap: An Accidental Haunting

Overall, this is fun to play, but it's a bit short - it took me about five hours to complete. One difference about this game is the lack of returns to the same room - each main room has three smaller rooms to explore, and you never go back to the same scene to find more objects. I expected a longer game considering the size of the download, but a lot of that turned out to be animation.
What I liked:
- There's no time limit
- The hidden objects aren't *too* difficult to find, but they take a bit of searching.
- The storyline is well-written - it's funny, a bit sad, and charming in places.
- The riddles are fun and relatively easy to solve.
- The penalty for too many mis-clicks is rather high ::g:: (you'll see what I mean).
- In addition to the usual objects and mini-games, there are some 'minor' ghosts to be captured, and they have some fun stories behind them.
What I didn't like:
- The mini-games are mostly hand-eye coordination/speed games, and I'm no good at those, but after an initial try, you can skip them.
- Some objects are difficult to find because the graphics are a bit *too* cartoonish.
- I expected some sort of interactive play at the end, but the characters wrap it up without any help.
Overall, this game is a little different from the usual HOG formula, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for something new.

PAC-MAN Review

PAC-MAN

Once upon a time, a little yellow circle with a mouth and a voracious appetite for dots came along and changed the world. As Pac-Man Fever swept the nation, people lined up with pockets full of quarters at all of the arcades springing up all over the place; the names Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde became the most famous ghosts in the world; people started buying Atari 2600s left and right to guide this little fellow around his never-changing maze; and the kids of my generation became instant video game addicts. The revolution even had a theme song, with Buckner & Garcia's song Pac-Man Fever hitting #9 on the Billboard charts (actually, the whole video game-themed album was great). Sure, Pac-Man wasn't the first video game, and, yes, Ms. Pac-Man was basically the same thing only better, but Pac-Man will always be the ultimate video game icon.
I don't know how many years it has been since I played Pac-Man, but it's great to reexperience the game again now, thirty years after its debut (although I have to admit I'm still as lousy at it as I was a pre-teen). The background is a little prettier if you choose to play under the Enhanced Mode, and my computer arrow keys don't have the same appeal as the original console joystick, but the gameplay of this PC version is virtually identical with the original. The stats are a nice and non-intrusive addition - no longer does the true video game nerd have to estimate the number of dots consumed in a typical game.
Kids today may look at this game and pity those of us who grew up with such a simple and visually unimpressive video game, but I hope they realize that Pac-Man paved the way for all of the high-tech, visually stunning games of today. I also hope they'll try it for themselves because they just might like it. Wish the little guy a happy 30th birthday by downloading your own copy of this title.
