BRODERBUND Braveheart (Windows) Review

BRODERBUND Braveheart (Windows)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One of the fears of game-developers is that people will copy their game, and they won't receive profits. However, one of the fears of game-player is that the systems will no longer support their games. Hence the gigantic move to the console, and the shut down of the PC game market (unless it's an obscene amount of revenue like the on-line pay to play games). Here, cDilla and/or SecuROM have locked down the CD's distributed by Broderbund/SmartSaver. This is very, very, very unlike Broderbund. They have been an avid compter software manufacturer since the mid 80's. What happened to them? (Rumor has it that the evil MindScape company bought them up.) No one knows. Here, if you did ever buy this game, you'll need the box top, receipt, UPC, and CD. Then, in the spirit of what use to be Broderbund, they'll give you a credit. You can't play this game. They don't want you to. A number of hacking/backup software programs will illegaly take down the "Please insert the correct CD" dialog box that you'll get after you install patch 3.22, but none of the companies involved want anything to do with you after you buy this game. I see greed. They see protecting profits. Mel Gibson, Parmont, 20th Century Fox, ICON, Eidos, cDilla, and SecuROM sure have let us down. They only wanted you to play it for a couple years and throw it away, so you could buy more things that don't work from them. Ha! ******WARNING THIS GAME WILL NOT WORK******. You'll have more fun if you throw $10 out your car window and see who fights over it. Mel's already got mine.

Colin McRae Rally 2.0 Review

Colin McRae Rally 2.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am very impressed with Colin McRae Rally. It provides an all around great gaming experience.
In the game itself, the tracks are widely varied in both their look and feel. If you have a force feedback controller you'll really appreciate the different surfaces. The cars have noticeable handling differences and setting them up for a particular surface/weather combination requires some work. The icing on the cake are the verbal calls from your navigator letting you know about the track up ahead.
As other reviews have mentioned, the damange model is very cool. You can hear and see the damaged parts of your car. Windows break, hoods crumple and bumpers drag on the ground. I've also noticed that if your electric system is damanged you'll occassionally find yourself driving along with a turn signal running. You might also see your headlights fail -- not fun on a night course.
That said, I was still looking for more out of the damange model. I regularly slam the passenger side of the car into a tree.. I was expecting my navigator to be "damanged" after some of those hits. :) Also, I was never able to get a car to completely break down. I don't know if there is a way to DNF in this game.
The 3 skill levels seem non-linear in difficulty. On the lowest level it is pretty easy to win the championship, but as soon as you jump to "intermediate" your competition gets substantially better and it is difficult to pull off top finishes.
One last gripe about the gameplay... when flip the car or go off the road you are immediately returned the road and continue the race. Even if you can't DNF, there should be some sort of large time penalty.
All in all a great game. The gameplay is a lot of fun and it will give your force feedback wheel quite a workout. I've even found the car control I learned in this game helped in other racing sims.

WarZone 2100 Review

WarZone 2100
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Warzone 2100 is the strategy game to end all strategy games. The storyline is great. You're able to build structures like the factory, HQ, and Research Facility. And you're able to build units each with different bodies, wheel systems, and weapons. And almost every mission has artifacts you can research so you can build more units and structures. Also, even at the easiest level of challenge the enemies are always tough and intelligent. And they're always better equipped then you, making it even more difficult. Overall, this is one of the best games for everyone, not just strategy gamers.

Great game, unlike the other reviewer stated, you do have to plan before you go into battle, so in my book its not boring, it is realistic to a certain degree. After all this is only a game, and the price is appropriate. thank you:

I bought the game Tiger Hunt because I had tried the demo and wanted a game that was simple and easy, yet fun. Tiger Hunt qualifies as just that. I can sit down and play it for an hour or so and then leave it. It doesn't comsume my whole day as some more complex games do. If I wanted realism I'd join the Army.

Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus Review

Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After so many years of gaming I finally got around to a Phantasy Star title and it's great! Past reviews describing PSU as an incomplete game kept me away before, but it certainly has filled out nicely since then because it feels like a full gaming experience to me. Well worth the price in my opinion (including the optional $10 subscription for online play). And I highly recommend this new "expansion" Ambitions of the Illuminus which is actually stand alone. It has just about everything from the first. Also it seems the game has been tweaked so new players can level up quickly to about midlevel. This provides a little "catch up" I assume.
Graphics look splendid on my old machine. I have a crappy NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 and it runs smoothly (albeit in a 640x480 window; I gotta upgrade this dinosaur).
Sound is satisfactory. I find myself listening to the default music more often than pulling up my own music.
The community is quite decent. I've played MMOs that are just an ocean of kids and this is not one of those. Beyond the kiddy chatter at hot spots I found very helpful and considerate members.
Not much lag at all through my connection. I've heard this game isn't very demanding as far as bandwidth so long as your connection is better than dial-up.
I recommend doing some research before buying this game since it's set up a little different than most. For example, there's online and offline playing modes and PC/PS2 servers are separate from Xbox servers.

Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus is the expansion pack for the popular Phantasy Star Universe game, bringing a more personalized and interactive universe to the acclaimed series. In addition to new enemies, weapons, levels and cities there will be more options available for gamers to further individualize and customize the look of their avatars. Ambition of the Illuminus continues the exciting PSU story online as the player's personal online avatar is now the central character, investigating and working to restore peace in the chaotic Gurhal System. The player investigates through a series of single-player missions, meeting familiar characters like Ethan Waber from Episode 1, along with other new ones, including a GUARDIAN instructor, Laia Martinez. In addition, the online multiplayer world, with its fast-paced, engaging battle experience for up to six players, has been greatly expanded with new missions, new cities and new enemies.

Active Lancer (Mac) Review

Active Lancer (Mac)

I was probably one of the first to buy this game and play the full version, and I must say "wow"! This game is worth much more than just $20.00. Classic shootem up fans will certainly love this game with its full-screen one/two-player shooting frenzy, but there is much more to this game. The awesome sound track, cinematics, and storyline really make this game more than just another shooter. The 3 different character pilots, 5 different chargeable weapons [air and ground], in-game upgrade story to customize and upgrade your ship, and built-in networking support make this the best shooter for the mac i've played yet.
Give this game a shot. There should be a link to download the demo somewhere on the website at www.desoftware.com. You can also find reviews there [whenever they get posted].

Best Seller Series: Starcraft Review

Best Seller Series: Starcraft
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Starcraft is the ultimate real-time strategy game. In a world of games that lose their appeal within a year of release, Starcraft keeps bringing players back. Blizzard Entertainment is known for its excellent RTS-type games such as the Warcraft series, but the company's high water mark is Starcraft. The set-up is that a long lost space colony of humans finds itself in mortal conflict with two alien races, the Zerg (nasty reptiles) and Protoss (ancient psionic warriors). The game allows you to play all three races in turn, and revolves around the collection of resources to buy more units, buildings and technological improvements as you try to fulfill mission objectives.
As we've come to expect from Blizzard, the gameplay itself is superb - intuitive interface, interesting units that complement each other in interesting ways, and graphics that are adequate even if they are showing their age. In my opinion, the balance between the three races is as close to perfection of any game I've played. Each race is utterly distinct and requires completely different strategies to play, but none has an obvious advantage over the others. But where the game really goes over the top is in the storyline. Blizzard is NOT known for great plots. For example, the Warcraft III storyline has some unbelievable plot twists that have to be overlooked to keep playing. In contrast, Starcraft has an absorbing plotline that flows seamlessly throughout the single player campaign and actually made me gasp in astonishment a few times, which has never happened since in an RTS.
I assume that any fan of real-time strategy computer games already has this one. If you have any interest at all in RTS, get this game. If you passionately hate RTS, Starcraft is the best bet to change your mind.

Starcraft Review

Starcraft
Average Reviews:

Over the last 10 years that I first installed STARCRAFT I have replayed it countless of times. Every time a new overhyped game disappoints me, this is one of the games I pull out of my library to be reminded what a GREAT PC GAME LOOKS & PLAYS LIKE! (others include UNREAL, BALDUR's GATE, GRIM FANTANGO and SHOGUN:TOTAL WAR)
Everyone has his/her favorite RTS and no one can claim that STARCRAFT introduced the futuristic RTS genre (that would be DUNE). Nevertheless, the great, crisp and clear graphics, the balanced units and the strategic terrain all contributed into turning STARCRAFT into a true classic. This is a game that passed the test of time, not only because its aging graphics are still acceptable but also because it is one of those games that stays with you. Forever.
So, the next time some gaming industry MBA (who probably could not tell an RTS from an cRPG) tables the idea of LIMITED INSTALLATIONS, what he will have primarily accomplished is to have his game forgotten within a year.

The Sims Superstar Expansion Pack Review

The Sims Superstar Expansion Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Many reviews have already described all of the new interactions and items that come with this expansion pack, so I'll focus on some of the things that may not be mentioned that I would have wanted to know before buying it.
1. Overall I would say this expansion involves more work than the others. Becoming famous is an all consuming occupation leaving your Sims little time for anything else. Sims must spend countless hours in Studiotown.
2. The game cannot be saved while a Sim is in Studiotown (much like the downtown area of Hot Date). This is a problem if you experience frequent crashes with your game. I find I need to take my Sim home where I can save the game every time he/she has raised their fame score, so that I don't lose it because of a crash. This is time consuming.
3. Sims run out of energy very quickly in Studiotown so not much can be accomplished in each visit. (only one visit is allowed per day)
4. Sims need famous friends in order to become famous. I find it very difficult to make friends with these famous Sims, the friendship scores don't seem to increase as quickly as with regular Sims.
5. This one only applies if you have downloaded objects from online Sims sites: I have a user-created teleporter in my game, and it no longer works. The game crashes whenever I try to use it. This forces me to use the phone to invite other Sims over, leaving it up to chance rather than being able to import them at will. (Much harder to increase the friendship score this way). Teleporters worked with every other expansion pack, but not Superstar as of yet (hopefully someone will fix this).
I don't mean to point out only the negative aspects of the game, I do enjoy this game but am a little disappointed that it takes so much more work than I had expected. I do love all of the new interactions that are available, and like watching my Sims sing, act or model. I'm still looking forward to an obsessed fan following my famous Sim home. My Sims don't have a high enough fame score for that yet :) (Also, there aren't really 3 separate career paths, Sims access all of the items one at a time as their fame score increases, so they are essentially rock stars, actors and models).
Overall, if you love the Sims, you'll love this expansion pack as well. But be prepared to spend a lot of time trying to become famous.

Fallout 3 Game Ad-On Pack: Broken Steel and Point Lookout Review

Fallout 3 Game Ad-On Pack: Broken Steel and Point Lookout

Broken Steel does for Fallout 3 what the Extended Editions did for Lord of the Rings: by adding more and deeper content it makes you care more and feel like things have properly been resolved. Plus, after the dramatic, explosion-packed finale, you get to play on as long as you like with a raised level cap.
Point Lookout adds a huge swampy area for you too look around with plenty to see and do. The quest is fun and interesting and there are some great characters and locations. It's a great Fallout add-on, but those who enjoyed Bethesda's Shivering Isles and Morrowind will enjoy the landscape too.

SimCity 2000 Special Edition (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
SimCity 2000 has been around for awhile, but don't let that hold you back from buying it, especially at this price. Although not as graphically beautiful as SimCity 3000, it is considerably more playable and almost as detailed. In addition to the ability to design and build your own city, something that can be endlessly fascinating, there are several interesting scenarios good for an hour or two of play. Also, this game is well worth your consideration if you have an older computer. It runs beautifully on everything from a 486-66 up.
If you haven't played SimCity 2000 yet, you owe it to yourself to check out the game I firmly believe was Maxis' finest creation.

I got this game. it was fun until.... it froze. or the grooming tools and menus went to white blobs(i mean you cant read them, they just turned white).I tried it on my all the computers(which are all fairly new) and the game froze/turned white. The story was pretty good, but i didnt get far because i had to log off and go back on whenever it turned white. If you feel like a nice white frozen treat this would be perfect to buy.

Diablo Review

Diablo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It seems that a lot of people focus on the fact that Diablo is a very dated game by today's standards. Obviously, there comes a time when a game no longer appeals to the eye, and is shoved aside in favor of a game with the latest 3D graphics. But.....is that game any good, or is it just a hollow display of beautiful graphics and no substance? Diablo is a game of substance and downright sophistication, even by today's standards. I say this because it has a pretty rich storyline, and is complemented by a darkness that is second to none. Furthermore, the music (which is usually ignored by gamers) really makes this game. Sure, as one travels through every level of the labrynth, it does get a little repetitive at times, but one never knows when danger is lurking nearby. What I really enjoy about this game is its extremely user-friendly interface, which allows for the whole game to be played with the mouse. Also, this game is compatible with any computer today, as it uses very little memory. I like games that don't call for a patch because it's overloaded with goodies that aren't conducive with one's system. Diablo is an all-around great playing experience that will have the player on the edge of their seat at all times. Leveling up isn't so easy at times, nor is finally getting to use special magical weapons or powers; they have to be earned the old-fashioned way through grit and patience. This game provides hours and hours of old-school RPG gaming on a Saturday night. Turn out the lights and immerse yourself in the dark world of Diablo!!! 10/10

SimCity 4 Review

SimCity 4
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
SimCity 4 is a very fun, somewhat addictive game. My only problem with it (and other games in the Sims series') is that it somewhat frequently crashes, which is why I rated it 4/5. It's really inconvienent and you lose everythng that wasn't saved up until that point, so I'd recommend frequent game saving, especially after anything big you complete in the game. It's somewhat impossible to run a successful, big city without the cheat codes, which you can easily google for. But a cheat for a $1000 is ctrl+x, then type 'weaknesspays' in the green box at the top left corner. the cheat to unlock all the gifts is ctrl=x, then type 'you don't deserve it' in the green box at the top left.....But the $7.99 price tag is an excellent price and the shipping wasn't bad either. However I'd recommend SimCity 4 Deluxe for more features.
