Sims 3 Pack: Apartment Life + Pet Stories + Nightlife Review

Sims 3 Pack: Apartment Life + Pet Stories + Nightlife
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For some reason, this combo pack includes The Sims 2 Pet Stories.
While Apartment Life and Nightlife are both excellent expansion packs for The Sims 2, The Sims 2 Pet Stories is NOT COMPATIBLE.
Pet Stories is a standalone game, and does not expand on The Sims 2. I think they probably meant to put The Sims 2 Pets Expansion Pack in this bundle, which would work perfectly.
Oddly, it's a perfect example of how Electronic Arts made The Sims 2 titles very confusing to users: They can't even put a bundle together without making a glaring mistake such as this.

The chess program on this game CD is the famous Chess System Tal II, developed by Chris Whittington. This plays, and thinks, more like a human than other chess programs. Very interesting chess games. And impossible to beat! p.s. The other games on this CD are excellent. Hours and hours of fun. I have finally learned how to play bridge with 10 Pro Board Games.

Trackmania United Review

Trackmania United
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I originally got into Trackmania by playing Trackmania Nations, the free version offered at the Trackmania website. After logging several hours on the game, I became a Trackmaniac. I recently purchased the full version (Trackmania United) and was again impressed. Both Nations and United are great racing games because they are very different from most: the racing involves intense tracks with lots of loops and jumps and obstacles on the track. You can compete against yourself to beat the gold medal time for the track, or you can take your gameplay online to challenge friends or anyone else for the best time on any track. Each track has a unique twist that makes it challenging: lots of hairpin turns, very long jumps, unanticipated holes in the track floor, loops, etc. In Nations (which comes with United if you don't already have it), you can drive a formula-one style race car in a Stadium type enviroment. In United, you can drive cars from a Ferrari-style race car for speed to Jeep-style for off-road. Environments in United range from Stadium to Island to Desert to Snow and others. United also offers different types of racing, such as Puzzle, Stunt, or traditional Race. Although the game's graphics are not anything breathtaking, they are still good. Overall, the game is very fun and can be played for many, many hours.
Here's a bit of advice, though: I bought this game for $10 shipped; sometimes a certain seller will sell the game at this killer deal, but when its out of stock, the game goes for the standard $40 or more. The game being sold for $10 is the same exact one as being sold for more, so if you don't see it for $10, try waiting it out to see if the price goes down. No promises though: you might have to pay more, but it'll still be worth it.

My daughter loves it but since I was the one that had to install it, I was surprised to find that in order to play the game I had to temporarily give her administrator rights. It would have been nice if they would have mentioned this in the installation instructions so I wouldn't have thought I did something wrong when the game wouldn't work.

Scrabble 3 Complete Review

Scrabble 3 Complete
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This version of Scrabble not only allows the expected muli-player games and games against the computer at various skill levels, but also allows games between computers on a local area network, as well as over the Internet. The built-in dictionary is good, although it's missing a some words (e.g., ki, kis, qi & qis) that are included in the Merriam-Webster Official Scrabble Players' Dictionary, 4th Edition. As near as I can tell, 166,184 of the 267,751 words recognized by SOWPODS (anagram of two acronyms: OSW (Official Scrabble Words) OSPD (Official Scrabble Players Dictionary) - the word list used in tournament Scrabble in most countries except the USA, Thailand and Canada) are in the Scrabble Complete Dictionary. Too bad, definitions are not included; so you should still have a dictionary handy. There is a custom dictionary capability and it seems to work except for a bug: if you give it words of 15 characters (more can't fit across a Scrabble board), when it reviews the custom dictionary (described in the manual), it will strip off the last characters causing it to accept any resulting miss-spellings. The Internet and network play features work fine, but do not allow more than one player on each computer. I have not tried to see if it allows a network game that includes connections on both Internet and network. I have not had any problems running the program under Windows 98, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional. There appears to be a minor bug in the video driver when switching back to it using Alt+Tab, but if the Scrabble screen doesn't come back, just use the mouse to paint it back (you'll see what I mean if you experience it). Too bad the game doesn't use a Window instead of full screen only. Even if it has been installed on the computer, you must have the CD in a drive to start the game. Once the game is started, the CD can (but need not) be removed. The overall menu system is a bit clumsy. You must often first click on your selection, making it yellow, and then on Okay (2 clicks, where one would have sufficed). The program also has a chat and sound capability for network and Internet use that is cute.

Postal Review

Postal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Postal was an extremely controversial game when Ripcord Games released it back in 1997. Those people who want to ban everything under the sun were quite up in arms - figuratively, of course, not to mention ironically - about it. Postal supposedly corrupted the minds of the young, created violent criminals by inuring them to acts of cold-blooded murder, yada yada yada. All of those protests, of course, resulted in higher sales - which was Ripcord's marketing plan all along. These "ban everything under the sun" people just don't get it. The vast majority of us can actually separate fantasy from reality; we don't even come close to equating a game with real life. And Postal could not possibly be blamed for corrupting kids' minds - there's a great big M for Mature Audiences rating right on the box. If a child were to play this game, the blame would have to fall on the parents, not the software maker - but of course, a lot of parents won't accept the responsibility of actually raising their children when it's so much easier to just let them run wild and then blame society for their problems.
The funny thing about Postal is that, even back in 1997, the graphics were incredibly basic (almost anachronistic), the game was incredibly simple to master, and the whole thing could be played in one sitting. Despite all of this, I loved the game then and I love it now - and I love it for the reasons the critics hated it. It's hilarious. You play a guy who has gone Postal, and your only objective is to kill (with a pretty good range of increasingly destructive weapons) as many people as possible in a number of different settings - your yard, the junkyard, the farm, the construction site, etc. Cops and paramilitary types will try to stop and kill you, while a number of innocent civilians find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. You don't have to kill civilians to accomplish your objectives, but who can resist unleashing a few grenades in the midst of a marching band and then mowing the band members down as they run away in panic screaming "He's going Postal?" You don't just kill and move on, by the way. A lot of victims don't die immediately, so they'll be crawling around on the ground begging for mercy. It's up to you to let them die slowly or put them out of their misery, execution-style. If all the killing is more than you can take, you also have the option of pushing the suicide button (yelling "I regret nothing" as you shoot yourself in the head).
The strength of Postal is really the concept, not the gameplay. It's a short, incredibly easy game (although you can choose from 10 different skill levels) with relatively poor graphics, so you're probably not going to enjoy it unless you really buy into the violent concept. I still enjoy playing this game all these years after its release (and it does run in Windows XP without a hitch, by the way), but I can't say the gameplay in and of itself was ever all that impressive. Postal is the gaming equivalent of watching a good, low-budget horror film. It looks cheap, the special effects aren't really all that special, and yes, a lot of imaginary people die, but you can't help but enjoy the whole experience. And, when you're done, you walk away the same completely sane person you were when you sat down, with nary a compulsion to go out and do the violent things depicted on the screen.

This game came in the six pack that was for $20, back in 2000.
I still own this game, though I'm probably going to get rid of it because it messes up on my Windows ME.
The graphics are well done for an old game, and it's fun to choose the different weapons and cars. On some levels you start out with $20,000 which gives you a chance to buy a bunch of stuff. The two best weapons are the machine gun and missle launcher. The Spiked tires are cool because their useful against oil slick. One thing that wierd is when you hit one of the cows grazing on the pasture, they fly up in the air and smash on the ground like porcelain.(It's funny to hear the moooo as the cow flies up)
Buy this game here on Amazon, cause it's cheap.

Boggle/Upwords/Hangman Word Hunter Collection Review

Boggle/Upwords/Hangman Word Hunter Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I usually shy away from Valuesoft, but what a pleasant surprise here! No problems installing the collection on my XP system, no noticeable bugs, thoughtful options... and some great games! For this price, you can't go wrong if you like word games.
In my opinion, Upwords is the clear pick of the litter. Extremely addictive! While the game can be played the classic way, several options allow you to spice it up: unlimited tile stacking (instead of the usual 5-tile high), colored tiles (where letter tiles are of different colors, and forming words in the same color doubles your points), time limit, etc. I found the AI to be a decent opponent, even though I didn't know some of the words it used. Another nice touch is that the game displays your current word(s) score before you commit to it -- and if one of the words shown has a score of zero, it means it's not in the game's dictionary.
Boggle is fun too. You can play it solitaire, or with AI player(s), and with or without a time limit. The board can be the classic 4x4 cubes, the Big 5x5 cubes board, or the Mega board with 6x6 cubes. Here again, several options allow you to modify the standard play to spice things up (multi-use letters, disallow "s" plurals, minimum word length, and more).
Word Hunter is similar to a game called Super Text Twist. Your are given 8 letters forming an anagram, and a certain amount of words to find between 3 to 8 letters. I found the game quite entertaining. Perfect for a quick game if you don't have time for something more meaty.
Hangman didn't hold my attention very long, but maybe younger players would enjoy it. One option lets you change the classic hangman character into a spider -- with 8 legs, it allows for more wrong guesses. Other options allows you to make the game more difficult, for instance by disallowing vowel guesses.
Pros:
- Infinite replay value.
- Single player, multiplayer hotseat/network/LAN (haven't tried any multiplayer games yet)
- Adjustable AI players difficulty.
- Music and/or sound effects can be turned off.
- Can be played without the CD in the drive.
- According to my CD, it's compatible with Windows Vista too.
Cons:
- Can't save a game in progress (not a big deal, although it would have been nice for Upwords).
- Can't edit the dictionary used by the game (Upwords refused the word "zen" for instance, which I found irritating).
- None of the games save high scores.
All in all, a great value for very entertaining games (Upwords alone is worth it!)

Panzer General II Review

Panzer General II
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If survival is a measure of quality, then PZG 2 must stand with the greatest computer games ever made. It was a great example of "brilliance in simplicity" when it was released and time has not in any way diminished its laurels. In an age when even thinking-man's games are often judged on bells and whistles rather than user-friendliness and enjoyability, it's refreshing to have one at hand that combines the ease-of-play of an action shooter with all the mental challenges you'd demand from a game of strategy.
Simply described, PANZER GENERAL 2 is a tactical-strategic game set in WW 2, which allows the player to choose either individual, one-and-done scenarios from various points between 1938 - 1945 or fight out whole, multi-scenario campaigns that took place during the war. (Individual units are at the regimental level, which allows the player to fight corps or army-size battles). Gamers may select from any of the five campaigns:
British: Follows a British army in NW Europe from 1943 - 1945, with special emphasis on the Normandy battles. A fairly short campaign, maybe five scenarios.
American: Follows the American army in NW Europe from 1943 - 1945. Another short campaign, beginning at Salerno and ending at Dessau. (Closely mirrors the British campaign.)
Russian: Follows the Soviet Army from winter 1941 to the assault on Berlin in 1945. Five scenarios or so.
German: "Blitzkrieg" - follows the German Wehrmacht from the Spanish Civil War in 1938 through most of its victorious campaigns in Poland, Norway, France, Greece, Russia, Africa, etc. This is by far the most detailed of the campaigns, and can go up to or past 17 different scenarios, including some great "What-Ifs" including the invasions of Malta, England and America (if you do really well). "Defending the Reich", on the other hand, is a defensive campaign which begins at Stalingrad and leads you through battles at Stalingrad, Salerno, Kursk, Normandy, and Hungary. It offers the German player the challenge of saving Hitler's empire for him, against overwhelming odds.
PZG 2 is built primarily as a campaign game, meaning that the player starts out with a corps or "family" of units which follow him from scenario to scenario (assuming they survive), and also allows him to acquire new units as time goes on. A very impressive and well-researched array of aircraft, tanks, armored fighting vehicles, artillery pieces, infantry units, and so on are available for every side to draw upon. In addition, a detailed requisition board synced into the game's play-clock allows you to upgrade your weapons as time goes on, so that units fighting in 1944 don't have to use 1939 weaponry. Tough combat situations add experience to your units, and extraordinary feats on the battlefield produce "leaders" who lend elite qualities to their units such as tenacity on defense, double attack, etc. In addition, a scenario-builder allows you to design your own games using not only the major combatants but also Hungarians, Poles, Finns, etc. Once you have the game down, this can be a hell of a lot of fun (say, America vs. USSR, 1946!).
PZG 2 was designed to be intuitive, and requires very little in the way of brow-furrowing to master. Movement, fighting, supply, etc. are all very fluid and idiot-proof, allowing you to concentrate on your battle tactics. Unlike many "strategy" games which favor mindless use of brute force or crazy speed, this one demands that you pay some homage to Clausewitz - concentrate your forces, stick to your objective, mind your clock and guard your flanks (failure to do so may result in embarrassing side effects, such as a*s-kicking). While the game's AI isn't exactly on the Brianiac level, it is more than clever enough on defense to give you fits, and has an eerie knack for finding your weak spot and driving a few regiments of tanks through it.
A last benefit: the engines used to power PZG 2 are so simple that numerous downloadable campaigns, with upgraded weaponry and sound, are available for free on the Internet, once you've exhausted all the possibilities of the game itself. But since that takes a couple of years, don't feel rushed. This classic has stood the test of more than ten years in a market where most games are forgotten in a month. It can wait.

I bought the game Tiger Hunt because I had tried the demo and wanted a game that was simple and easy, yet fun. Tiger Hunt qualifies as just that. Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus Review

Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After so many years of gaming I finally got around to a Phantasy Star title and it's great! Past reviews describing PSU as an incomplete game kept me away before, but it certainly has filled out nicely since then because it feels like a full gaming experience to me. Well worth the price in my opinion (including the optional $10 subscription for online play). And I highly recommend this new "expansion" Ambitions of the Illuminus which is actually stand alone. It has just about everything from the first. Also it seems the game has been tweaked so new players can level up quickly to about midlevel. This provides a little "catch up" I assume.
Graphics look splendid on my old machine. I have a crappy NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 and it runs smoothly (albeit in a 640x480 window; I gotta upgrade this dinosaur).
Sound is satisfactory. I find myself listening to the default music more often than pulling up my own music.
The community is quite decent. I've played MMOs that are just an ocean of kids and this is not one of those. Beyond the kiddy chatter at hot spots I found very helpful and considerate members.
Not much lag at all through my connection. I've heard this game isn't very demanding as far as bandwidth so long as your connection is better than dial-up.
I recommend doing some research before buying this game since it's set up a little different than most. For example, there's online and offline playing modes and PC/PS2 servers are separate from Xbox servers.

Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus is the expansion pack for the popular Phantasy Star Universe game, bringing a more personalized and interactive universe to the acclaimed series. In addition to new enemies, weapons, levels and cities there will be more options available for gamers to further individualize and customize the look of their avatars. Ambition of the Illuminus continues the exciting PSU story online as the player's personal online avatar is now the central character, investigating and working to restore peace in the chaotic Gurhal System. The player investigates through a series of single-player missions, meeting familiar characters like Ethan Waber from Episode 1, along with other new ones, including a GUARDIAN instructor, Laia Martinez. In addition, the online multiplayer world, with its fast-paced, engaging battle experience for up to six players, has been greatly expanded with new missions, new cities and new enemies.

Best Seller Series: Starcraft Review

Best Seller Series: Starcraft
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Starcraft is the ultimate real-time strategy game. In a world of games that lose their appeal within a year of release, Starcraft keeps bringing players back. Blizzard Entertainment is known for its excellent RTS-type games such as the Warcraft series, but the company's high water mark is Starcraft. The set-up is that a long lost space colony of humans finds itself in mortal conflict with two alien races, the Zerg (nasty reptiles) and Protoss (ancient psionic warriors). The game allows you to play all three races in turn, and revolves around the collection of resources to buy more units, buildings and technological improvements as you try to fulfill mission objectives.
As we've come to expect from Blizzard, the gameplay itself is superb - intuitive interface, interesting units that complement each other in interesting ways, and graphics that are adequate even if they are showing their age. In my opinion, the balance between the three races is as close to perfection of any game I've played. Each race is utterly distinct and requires completely different strategies to play, but none has an obvious advantage over the others. But where the game really goes over the top is in the storyline. Blizzard is NOT known for great plots. For example, the Warcraft III storyline has some unbelievable plot twists that have to be overlooked to keep playing. In contrast, Starcraft has an absorbing plotline that flows seamlessly throughout the single player campaign and actually made me gasp in astonishment a few times, which has never happened since in an RTS.
I assume that any fan of real-time strategy computer games already has this one. If you have any interest at all in RTS, get this game. If you passionately hate RTS, Starcraft is the best bet to change your mind.

SunAge Review

SunAge
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Sun Age is upon us: our solar system is dying and humanity faces extinction. Humans and mutants (Raak-Zun) battle over Earth's remaining resources when an alien race (the Sentinels) appear and open a portal to another pristine planet - and now another three-way race is on. As an extra twist, who is the mysterious entity puppet-mastering everyone behind the scenes? As RTS storylines go, no originality awards here but not too shabby either...
SUN AGE is an RTS featuring the above three factions, each with its own buildings, units and weaponry, engaged across two different planets in a variety of environments, from dilapidated cities to jungles.
The game's strong point is its interesting balancing: there are four types of armor (Structural, Synthetic, Plated and Flak) and four types of damages (Laser, Flame, Explosive and Projectile) and each faction develops its distinct technologies at different rates. So, it is common to have to face an enemy better equipped than you - making things interesting as the game will REALLY test your strategy skills! Ok, maybe your patience too...
Another good feature are the power-grids: for a building to function it has to be located within the boundaries of your faction's power-grid, each with its own beautiful effect. As a result, bases can be established fast - but now have a soft underbelly to exploit: this makes for additional strategy planning, both offensive and defensive!
Graphically, the game has an unshakable retro feeling. Both the unit design and their movement repertoire - as well as the gameplay - are all done in...2D! Sure, there are 3 layers of apparent action (foot-soldiers, elevated ground vehicles and aircrafts) and the tracers and the rockets will try to create the illusion of 3D, but the overall visual effect is just a notch better than the original STARCRAFT - a 10 year old game, mind you. If you have experienced C&C3-TIBERIAN WARS or SUPREME COMMANDER (or even EMPEROR BATTLE FOR DUNE) visually you will be greatly disappointed by this game. On the other hand, older gamers will probably appreciate the fresh look on a familiar interface. It will be like replaying a revamped STARCRAFT all over again.
The sounds (explosions, movement and environmentals) also have a retro character but are not bad. What is truly bad is the voice acting. And if you think all those cardboard voices will get on your nerves, try ...saving the game. Apparently, this is a Corrupt Save-Files Age, and more often than not, you will have to start over. A patch is desperately needed (1.05 has been released but to only limited effect), but keep in mind that older saved games hardly ever are compatible with newer patches.
Finally, a lot of the hotkeys do not work: mouse-selecting a group of units will only select units of the same type (not a bad idea altogether, unless one is under pressure to fend off a sudden attack); however, when ordering grouped units, their response is...fickle at best. And at the heat of the battle that can be really frustrating.
This is an RTS game that had been in development for about a decade and, being the labor of love of its developing team (VERTEX4), was supposed to reinvigorate the genre - hence my generous rating. Unfortunately, the road to mediocrity is paved by good intentions.
If looking for a budget RTS game and have played all the older ones, well, go for it. Otherwise, wait for STARCRAFT II.

Guild 1400 Gold Edition Review

Guild 1400 Gold Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game appealed to me for several reasons. One, I'm studying medieval history, so the time period the game covers was appealing. Second, I love historical role-playing and civilization building, and the game promised to combine the best of both genres in one box.
In the box I found two CDs and a very thin instruction guide/quick start manual (which was quickly lost). I assumed, the full manual would be on one of the two CDs, so I installed the game and started it up.
No manual. And unfortunately, the maunal available for download leaves a LOT of questions unanswered -- like HOW do you send out trading carts to other cities when you're a trader? This was the only disappointing aspect to the game.
The first thing I look for in a game is a good tutorial, so that's where I started. The tutorial gives a great introduction to the game, but left some things out that I really wish I had known - things like hiring a master to run your businesses for you (very handy when you've got a bunch of buildings up) and planning your children's' education and career. But it covered the basics - just plan on playing a throwaway game on "Very Easy" mode to really get a grasp on the game dynamics before you go hard-core.
The game is entertaining, and addictive. You choose your career and try to make money and advance socially while sabotaging your opponents and competition. You can run for office (anything from town servant all the way up to Pope), trade with other citizens, add on to your home and business, and even build new buildings. Micromanaging everything takes a lot of effort, so you will want to hire a master for some of your businesses.
At this point, you can start to get political. Make friends with people, spy on people, smear the reputations of your enemies. Kiss up to the right people and you will get cushy government jobs that pay well for little effort. Declare vendettas on people that you don't like. Just like real life.
The graphics in the game are quite good, though seem a bit dated. They remind me of the graphics in Dungeon Seige, actually. The combat system is a simple point and click interface, but wasn't used that much in the games I played. The sound is also good.
That said, I found a few drawbacks to the game. The choice of religion doesn't seem to do much for you (Cathar vs. Catholic), and isn't realistic for all areas. There weren't many Cathars in England, for example, but there were Lollards. You can't be Jewish or Muslim in Spain, though both were present in the middle ages.
You can pick your character's gender, but that doesn't seem to affect much in the game either. Women can hold political office (including Catholic bishop!), and own more property than their husbands do. This is hardly realistic for the time period, but I can understand why it was put in the game - marketing rule #1 is don't make the customers mad at you. Historical realism in this instance would have really offended a lot of people.
The game has a big online fan base that is eagerly awaiting the release of The Guild 2, which promises even better graphics and story variations. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I'll be able to play that one until I upgrade my video card. Thankfully, The Guild Gold will hold me quite nicely until I can upgrade.
If you don't like civilization building or role-playing, don't get this game. There are times when nothing happens at all, especially if you've got masters running things for you. But if you've always wanted your own Medieval village (and, really, who hasn't?), this is the game for you. Get it, and practice - The Guild 2 is on it's way.

This is an excellent program. My daughter uses it at school and loves it. However, when I installed it on her laptop (she has a limited user account under Windows XP Service Pack 2.), I received an error message "Could not create file for system settings." I went to the Broderbund website and found a technical note (ID: 39783)for this problem. The instructions work for XP prior to SP2, but they are completely useless under SP2. As a result, my daughter completes a set of lessons and, instead of moving on to the next lesson, the programs throws her back anywhere from 5 to 15 lessons. This has been sufficiently discouraging that she has given up on the program. The Broderbund site has no facility to send a question or inform them of a problem. I'm hoping someone from Borderbund will see this review and post a fix to their website. Without a fix for this problem, I'm stuck and this program unfortunately becomes a waste of time and money.
