Starcraft is the ultimate real-time strategy game. In a world of games that lose their appeal within a year of release, Starcraft keeps bringing players back. Blizzard Entertainment is known for its excellent RTS-type games such as the Warcraft series, but the company's high water mark is Starcraft. The set-up is that a long lost space colony of humans finds itself in mortal conflict with two alien races, the Zerg (nasty reptiles) and Protoss (ancient psionic warriors). The game allows you to play all three races in turn, and revolves around the collection of resources to buy more units, buildings and technological improvements as you try to fulfill mission objectives.
As we've come to expect from Blizzard, the gameplay itself is superb - intuitive interface, interesting units that complement each other in interesting ways, and graphics that are adequate even if they are showing their age. In my opinion, the balance between the three races is as close to perfection of any game I've played. Each race is utterly distinct and requires completely different strategies to play, but none has an obvious advantage over the others. But where the game really goes over the top is in the storyline. Blizzard is NOT known for great plots. For example, the Warcraft III storyline has some unbelievable plot twists that have to be overlooked to keep playing. In contrast, Starcraft has an absorbing plotline that flows seamlessly throughout the single player campaign and actually made me gasp in astonishment a few times, which has never happened since in an RTS.
I assume that any fan of real-time strategy computer games already has this one. If you have any interest at all in RTS, get this game. If you passionately hate RTS, Starcraft is the best bet to change your mind.

Assassins Creed II Review

Assassins Creed II

If you like games that require thought then this is a good one. You can leap and climb all over the games richly detailed environment, which reminds me of Tomb Raider. There are many secrets to be found and upgrades for your assassin...from weapons to dying your clothing. You can even pour money into the villa you stay at for renovations. Many of the challenges have to deal with navigating the games environment and coming up with ways to eliminate a target. The VO seems to be pretty well done so far and the story is also pretty good. Combat is not overly difficult and relies mostly on timing counter attacks. You might have some difficulty figuring out the controls at first, but have patience and take your time learning it.

Assassin's Creed II is the follow-up to the title that became the fastest-selling new IP in video game history. The highly anticipated title features a new hero, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, a young Italian noble, and a new era, the Renaissance. Assassin's Creed II retains the core gameplay experience that made the first opus a resounding success and features new experiences that will surprise and challenge players. Assassin's Creed II is an epic story of family, vengeance and conspiracy set in the pristine, yet brutal, backdrop of a Renaissance Italy. Ezio befriends Leonardo da Vinci, takes on Florence's most powerful families and ventures throughout the canals of Venice where he learns to become a master assassin.

Stroke of Midnight Standard Edition Review

I love hidden object games and this was just an ok one. Pretty easy actually. I didn't like the fact that when you found an object the game directed you right then and there where and how to use it. There was no figuring out what to do..it was more like I was along for the ride. AND I purchased the collector's edition..which leaves me feeling like what did I pay for?

Stroke of Midnight Standard Edition Review

Stroke of Midnight Standard Edition

The Stroke of Midnight is not heavy on mini puzzles, or even hidden object scenes. It's more like you are participating in an interactive storybook. The plot involves a blocked romance writer taking a trip to a desolate castle, looking for inspiration. She ends up discovering a tragic (though somewhat trite) love story, told by ghosts.
The game is unique in a few ways. You don't collect an inventory; instead when you collect a needed item you employ it right away. There is no decision making about what location you will visit next; you just move through the storyline in a linear fashion. There's no hint system for the few hidden object scenes; instead you touch the name of the item and you are shown right where it is.
The main problem is that throughout the game you are being literally told what to do at every turn. For example, if you pick up an object, you will immediately see a sentence telling you what to do with it. Considering you don't have to noodle through what to do with an inventory, or where you have to go next, this makes for a pretty simple game.
The mini games are o.k., nothing special. The most intriguing one involves a secret note system that two of the characters use to communicate. There's two puzzles where you have to concoct some formulas and figure out weight equivalencies which I found a bit hard, but only because I am fraction challenged.
The artwork of the game is above average, and you almost feel you are inhabiting the character's shoes since you can "move" her around the room and pan the scenes in a cinematic fashion.
The plotline is definitely paramount to this story, so much so that after the end of the game you are given the writer's completed novel in the form of a little e-book that fleshes out the love story.
I feel this is the perfect game for anyone who is new to hidden object games. I don't regret buying this game, but it won't be long remembered either.
